And I definitely have ended up struggling with a lot of what I believe and what I was brought up with through the investigation of these relationships with the women who are closest to me in my life.

The female half of the singing duo Pomplamoose didn’t make it to Toronto earlier this week due to a criminal record she assumed was of no consequence when it came to crossing the border.
Nataly Dawn Knutsen — who performs under her first and middle name — explained the situation on her blog after she was turned back by customs on Monday en route to a solo concert at the Horseshoe Tavern.
A background check that revealed a reckless driving misdemeanor that dated back seven years.
“I was 20. And it is the only traffic violation on my record,” explained Knutsen. “I realize that confessing the sins of my youth is completely unnecessary, but I wanted you to know how unexpected and irrational this whole thing was.
“We weren’t trying to sneak into the country. As a matter of fact, I played Montreal in 2010 and had no problems at customs, so we had no reason to anticipate this sort of thing. When speaking with the customs officer, I told him this and his response was that someone had slipped up and that I shouldn’t have been allowed in.”
The singer — whose act gained prominence through songs posted to YouTube — attempted to make it up to fans with a virtual performance from Rochester, N.Y.
Nataly Dawn expressed doubt that the problem would be cleared up anytime soon.
But she also expressed an openness to any marriage proposals that could help make any future Canadian tours easier.

Nataly Dawn, one half of the band Pomplamoose, raised $104,788 from 2,315 backers to fund her first solo album, How I Knew Her. To entice her fans to contribute, Dawn promised a slew of incentives, which included shirts, hard copies of the release, signed posters, and articles of clothing she wore in various Pomplamoose videos. By her estimation, Dawn spent approximately $10,000 to mail out the rewards to her supporters.
But Dawn said that logistics wasn’t the most challenging part of her Kickstarter campaign. It was the idea that people thought themselves as shareholders in her work.
“It’s not really what you sign up for,” she remarked. “You definitely want people to entrust you with funds. You then make an album for them, but you don’t really want them to have a say in how your budget works.
“I just think that’s unfair for the artist, honestly.”
The issue for Dawn was intensified by her raising five times the amount of her set goal. Suddenly, fans were complaining that she didn’t really need the whole $104,000 to record the album. Dawn countered by noting that not only did she use all of her Kickstarter funds, but she also opened four separate credit cards and dipped into her life savings to cover the difference.
Inevitably, our conversation of fans’ expectations shifted back to Palmer and her aforementioned million-dollar campaign.
In the fall of 2012, Palmer pissed off a lot of people after she tried to get professional backup musicians to play for free at various stops in her tour. Palmer’s critics, which included renowned music engineer Steve Albini, accused her of being exploitative and of using her name recognition to get out of properly compensating her accompanying performers.Palmer would eventually reverse her decision and announced that she had found money in her Kickstarter budget to compensate everyone, but before she did, Dawn took to her blog to express support for the beleaguered musician.
“Whether or not you agree with Amanda’s tactics, you are not shareholders in her Kickstarter project,” Dawn wrote. “When you gave her your money, you decided to trust her to invest it wisely.
“So keep trusting her and keep helping her.”

Patreon — which is set to launch on May 7 — was born out of Conte’s belief that there are some inherent problems with the way YouTubers get paid and how they fund their projects. According the musician, ad revenue doesn’t really amount to too much for YouTubers who don’t have scads of subscribers, and raising cash on Kickstarter doesn’t really work either because they’re not looking to fund a huge project — they’re just aiming to keep creating.“I just feel like there’s something broken there and there should be a way that someone with 10,000 readers or viewers can be making more money and make a living on what they’re doing,” Conte says.In an effort to solve this issue, Conte teamed up with his old college roommate, developer Sam Yam, to bootstrap together a new kind of platform that echoes the role of patrons of old.Patreon works thusly: When you sign up for the service, you will be able to become a patron of a particular artist — for example, Conte himself. Instead of pledging money to a single project — or subscribing to the service on a monthly basis — you pledge to give, say, one dollar to Conte for each video he uploads. The artist then rewards his/her patrons for how much they give. In Conte’s case, if you give $1 per video, you get access to a special stream with Conte where he gives tutorials and whatnot. If you give $5 or more, you get the stream, as well as a monthly Google hangout during which Conte will perform and answer questions. No matter how much you give, however, the initial content will not be exclusive — anyone can watch/read/listen to it.“The point of this whole thing is that it’s not exclusive,” Conte stresses. “The idea is basically that content is free and we almost have to act as if recorded media isn’t around anymore. Before recorded media was around, how did artists make money? They had these wealthy patrons — the Medici family and Pope Julius. I feel like it can still work that way. Especially now that you can diffuse the patronage over the crowd, instead of it just being one wealthy person.” Patreon, in turn, takes 5% of money given to artists for operational expenses.At launch, the site will feature a limited number of artists with more being added as the days wear on. (Conte says artists will be handpicked from submissions for the time being.) Conte himself will have an offer up on the site to promote his new EP, which will be free at launch on his page.

doesn't sound so great, either.....what about artists who are good at making music/videos but are crap at tutorials/whatnot/q&a?more importantly, what about consumers who enjoy music/videos but could give a rats about tutorials/hangouts/whatnot?
