look at this load of tosh. okay, some stuff sounds good in mono, but these ideas clearly don't stand ground all that well.

discuss, ilx

will Bob Dylan please deliver a copy of that mono box--gratis, of course--to my doorstep personally? i fear my drain bramage, via stereo sound, has left me mentally deficient, and i cannot possibly manage to snare one under my own steam. *sigh* *vigorously shakes fist (i...think?) at those evol, corporate flim-flam screwballs!*

That video is brilliant. It actually makes me want to buy that boxset (I never did till just now). Genuine lols.

early stereo sucked. it took 'em a while to get it right. 'electronically rechannelled for stereo' is like a scarlet letterz. everyone knows this.

early stereo did not suck! get one mercury living presence. or a dozen other labels i could name. but, yeah, fake stereo sucked.

scott otm - early actual stereo recordings are kinda awesome. it's the fake stuff where they took mono recordings and tried to make them into stereo that are terrible.

Agreed that many early (true) stereo recordings sound great, with a very natural feel to them. Then engineers got all wacko with it and started separating stuff too much (Rubber Soul, anyone?).
Regarding the Dylan mono box: I generally prefer the stereos but "Tambourine Man" sounds dramatically different — and better — in mono.

Jazzbo, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 17:48 (thirteen years ago) link

The pre-electric Dylan sounds better in mono, but I prefer the stereo mixes from Bringing It.. on.

haven't heard it, but someone told me that John Wesley Harding in mono was worth hearing ...

tylerw, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 17:51 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, JWH would be the obvious choice of all his '60s stuff to sound best that way. haven't heard it myself, tho.

was just gonna post how amazing i thought mono JWH sounded when i listened to it. probably only in my head, but i'd swear it sounded more urgent and alive than tha stereo reissue

KC & the sunshine banned (outdoor_miner), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 18:05 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, i mean, that one is kinda weirdly separated in stereo iirc -- one of those drums/bass panned all the way over here and vocals/guitar panned all the way over here. Maybe not the best approach for such a spare recording.

tylerw, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 18:10 (thirteen years ago) link

weird thing with mono sometimes (for me) at least is that sometimes i SWEAR stuff is panned but i know it can't be...i wonder if a lifetime of listening in stereo makes your brain kind of "pan" things automatically

The animal magnetism of Tim Pawlenty (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 22:17 (thirteen years ago) link

what i didn't get is the bit where the viewer was informed that they might have two ears but only one brain, and that you listen with your brain -when i've seen bands play, it's pretty rare they'll put all their amplifiers in front of one another. they're spread out to widen the sound. in an example situation i hear a guitar on the left side of the room, and a guitar on the right side. surely reproducing that onto a recording is the most accurate way of making a live recording itself,

jumpskins, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 22:26 (thirteen years ago) link

it depends, i know some of the bigger tours (like a u2 tour) were going back to mono set-ups.

also, in a decent to big room, the amount of sound you're actually getting from the stage is pretty minimal, you're hearing the PA mix.

EIEIoOoOO (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 22:34 (thirteen years ago) link

i've frequently had experiences in my life where sound is coming at me from more than one point. suspect my brain can handle it. i swear i've even occasionally heard three different sound sources at the same time. might just have been my imagination, though...

Every time I go to Jazzfest in New Orleans I like to pause at a spot on the grounds where I can hear traditional jazz, gospel choir and African drumming, or some similar combination, for a minute or two. I love the sensory overload.
