Wow, that's a shock, RIP Sleazy. Apart from TG / Coil let's not forget his design work with Hipgnosis through the 70s.

This is especially sad to me because his creativity has never really flagged - anything he's done has been worth hearing, whether I loved it or not he was an artist who treated his gifts with the full-on immersion they deserved. When TG reformed, they made new music. Release for release, Coil was one of the best, most interesting acts of the age. Someone who, if they put out a new record and you didn't know it was coming, were much more likely to surprise and challenge you than any other act who'd been around since the early eighties, really -- so many artists from that time decide they have nothing new to say. This idea seemed utterly alien to Peter Christopherson. I hope the spirit he brought to music haunts this earth for some time to come.

keep exploding frogs Sleazy
I'm really sideswiped by this, he was a great artist and a deeply thoughtful person, patient and precise, content to let others by his side be explosive and "star-shaped" while he quietly remained steadfast, dedicated, cleaning up the messes and moving forwards. I can't sum up how I'm feeling, but it was a privilege to have known him; he was extraordinarily generous with his time when I was working on the TG book and he was always encouraging and sweet to my bf and myself when we would interact at Coil and TG shows and festivals and backstages. When I covered "The Anal Staircase" in dedication to Geff at the Brainwaves fest he hugged me and thanked me backstage and it felt like a sincere benediction, though it only ever partially eased the fanboy reverence with which I always regarded him. Listening to "Broccoli" now. Will make my family raise a toast to him at Thanksgiving tonight.
RIP "they walk serene / in spaces between"

cha-cha very OTM.. Coil were one of those groups who could - and did - get away with pretty much anything musically - noise, dance, 'industrial', classical, ambient, soundtrack, 'proper' songs
no other band skipped genres so easily... so sad that both of them are now gone.....

Oh man, I was just mourning Jhonn's death the other night with a Coil marathon. This is just too horrible. We were lucky to get as much brilliant output out of the man in those brief 55 years. My condolences to all those who knew the man. He was as precious as they come.RIP

The lack of any information about the cause of death still puzzles me. Healthy 55-year-old men don't just die in their sleep. Did he have a heart attack, and if so what brought it on? Did he have a pre-existing heart condition, and if he did, did he know about it?
― my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Saturday, 24 March 2012 07:45 (1 year ago) Permalink
Otherwise healthy but overweight men with a history of drug use die suddenly ALL THE TIME.
― Three Word Username, Saturday, 24 March 2012 07:51 (1 year ago) Permalink
Yes, but what caused it? Heart failure? The cause of death is usually a matter of public record. Maybe not in Thailand though?
