this new OST & KJEX album makes me really happy.

is there a bad song on this thing? 'cajun lunch' is full of catchy disco-pop jams that don't make me cringe in the slightest (unlike CERTAIN OTHER EUROPEAN PRODUCERS AT THE MOMENT) and the production is full of piano house and 909 claps and everything i like about what's been revived in dance music these last few years. thx to lex & tim f for putting me on to this, it fucking rules.

too zany

really hard to pick a favorite, but this one's an early contender...

yes!

just to recap from CERTAIN OTHER PRODUCERS' THREADS, i first heard this track on tama sumo's panoramabar mix last year, and was immediately taken with it. it's probably as representative of the album as you'll get.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLLBAgavQ1Y

i keep listening to it wondering why their wackiness never grates, i think because behind all the cheese and jokes they do have a sense of restraint and take great care over their production, the singing etc. great album!

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 01:44 (thirteen years ago) link

(i mention that tama sumo panoramabar mix cuz it's also really excellent and got overlooked quite a bit last year.)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 01:45 (thirteen years ago) link

yes, it is zany. but certainly no more zany than your average mungolian jetset remix, and i think they toned it down quite a bit compared to their earlier stuff.

will check out that mix.

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 01:45 (thirteen years ago) link

also the diva vocals do quite a bit to embellish the zany-ness in all the right ways. esp on songs like "continental lover" and "the yellow man"

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 01:52 (thirteen years ago) link

too zany, though. i think noze or even dop do this very groovey yello-tinged house with more subtlety (not that yello were ever about subtlety but whatever)

i love the mung jetset remix of "milano model" to death, and the how not to be a biscuit ep is great, but the album so far is a bit much. maybe i've been listening to too much techno recently

interested to know which CERTAIN OTHER EUROPEAN PRODUCERS AT THE MOMENT are making you cringe

不合作的方式 (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 01:57 (thirteen years ago) link

or even kalabrese, to add to the list of slightly zany yet subtle european house producers

不合作的方式 (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 01:59 (thirteen years ago) link

people were talking about this album on the aeroplane thread. and the new aeroplane album is kind of an abomination. so that's who i mean.

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:00 (thirteen years ago) link

ok. i don't read that thread. sorry

不合作的方式 (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:01 (thirteen years ago) link

no, i'm just pissed at aeroplane ha. not sure if they would be your thing even at their best tbh

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:04 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, not really. you should check out kalabrese though, if you like this. sorry for pissing on your thread!

不合作的方式 (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:15 (thirteen years ago) link

also is that them (not aeroplane) doing pitched vocals on this mungolian jetset cover of talking heads...?

xp, no worries. i can sorta see why one might find this overly zany, but i dig it

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:23 (thirteen years ago) link

love the mungolian jetset record but theres something the mastering of it (or maybe the mp3s I have? dont think so tho) that sounds hella ... bad. or weak. or non-impactful. something. it doesnt bang like its supposed to. compressed or something idk

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:49 (thirteen years ago) link

wrong thread perhaps but the Darker (Metro Mix) after the Ost & Kjex track is next level awesome.

orakle-krake (Gukbe), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 03:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Not sure why these guys think they should sing. The vocals are terrible, cheesy and ridiculous. They render the album a novelty record. Vocals + techno is not peanut butter + chocolate, especially when the vocals are pointless and jokey. Musically it's enjoyable but Noze did the minimal/comedy thing best on Kitchen and there is no need for a continuation of the comedy / dance genre.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:59 (thirteen years ago) link

the lyrical depth isn't phenomenal but i definitely don't agree with you about the comedy aspect. the vocals are sorta goofy but nothing out of line with what most indie dance acts sound like (thinking !!!/hot chip/cut copy). or even the poppier kompakt stuff/matias aguayo or things in that vein. actually come to think of it matias aguayo has a pretty damn similar voice, just less dorky. i like the dorky, and the dischord between that and the straightforward/awesome production doesn't necessarily make it some big joke

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 05:17 (thirteen years ago) link

oh and i love kalabrese. they should put out another record

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 05:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, Aguayo is a good comparison but I like his playfulness, whereas the Cajun Sparkle stuff is a miss for me. Maybe a few more plays will change my mind.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 05:49 (thirteen years ago) link

i think the mjs remixes sorta primed me to accept and enjoy this type of vocal in a dance setting. i'm still having trouble getting into the vox on stuff like "creepy" or the shortwave set remix, and i'm not really sure i even want to. so i understand your reaction in some ways

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 06:01 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean the singing on that they came from the stars i saw them remix is really pretty questionable but kinda intriguing and weird at the same time

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 06:06 (thirteen years ago) link

hah, this is not half as zany as i was expecting, theyve even pared back the zaniness of the press photos that they're using now. i could still do w/out the vocals prolly though

procedurally generated todge (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 09:20 (thirteen years ago) link

it's on itunes so it should be (but it's tagged weirdly so maybe search by title, not artist - cajun lunch)

There's only a 2005 album called "Some But Not All Cheese Comes From The Moon" which sounds like an ILX display name if I ever heard one. I'm kinda scared by the cover art, mind you.

Two and a half minutes in, and it's AWESOME. All cheese should come from the moon if it sounds like this. It's like Trans Europe Express as recorded by Mungolian Jetset so far.

more or less zany than safety scissors?

cozen, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 09:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I sort of think you can get away with a sense of wackiness if you are cosmic and widescreen enough, the first Orb album set a pretty firm precedent there.

yeah the whole cheese & biscuit thing is sorta funny but YES- v junior/senior-esque indeed. i kinda dig their dirty mind cover too, you can find it on the strangefruit beats in space or here too i spose

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:41 (thirteen years ago) link

lost of zaniness in norway, which considering these guys (mungolian, O&K, lindstrom, prins thomas, kango, rune lindbaek, etc) are all friends, I guess isn't that surprising. Also, half of O&K runs The Villa, one of the best music clubs there, especially for dance stuff -- I get the feeling there's always a feedback loop happening in Oslo, so the music is likely to veer into extremes pretty easily (be it zany or cheesy or otherwise).

Dominique, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:45 (thirteen years ago) link

nah this ain't that zany but it sure is that awesome. thanks!

Bangelo, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah this doesn't feel anywhere near as zany as I'd expected it to. It's got a bit of a Get Physical circa. 2006 vibe to it, the Princier end of the spectrum. All the synth sounds feel really clean and pebbly.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 19:08 (thirteen years ago) link

i always find lindstrom kindof tinny and chilly

plax (ico), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 19:09 (thirteen years ago) link

i like a lot of these tracks, but i can't really take a whole album of this. i love "Mosambique Travelplan" and "Continental Lover", the latter particularly in the context of the Tamo Sumo mix. i think these guys work better in a mix in general, as a sudden burst of air and lightness. maybe my zany tolerance levels are too low.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

i like a lot of these tracks, but i can't really take a whole album of this.

This is exactly how I felt 9 or 10 tracks in. Lindstrom & Christabelle is a quick 47 minutes including a couple outroish tracks and leaves you wanting more. Some of the more dancey, CFCF-esque stuff here is just as good as anything on Real Life Is No Cool, though, and O&K's blues-house shtick is kinda refreshing amid a sea of balearic hippy dippy disco types.

its the really deep piano fills that get me

plax (ico), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm gonna have to bite the bullet on this one, and buy without hearing it.

(And I will be disappointed if it's not as cheesy as Some But Not All Cheese Comes From The Moon)

procedurally generated pidyn (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:46 (thirteen years ago) link

It's quite different from that first album, a lot tidier and more restrained. More dancefloor oriented.

Matt DC, Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Hrrmm. You like it, the Lex likes it, Haidooo likes it, it's kind of triangulation pointing to the idea that I will probably like it.

procedurally generated pidyn (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 29 July 2010 10:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm actually not sure I like it that much yet, the grooves themselves certainly, the Flight of the Conchords vocals not so much.

Matt DC, Thursday, 29 July 2010 10:02 (thirteen years ago) link

the Flight of the Conchords vocals

wait waht????????

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 29 July 2010 11:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I like it. (I do not recall thinking of Flight of the Conchords.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 29 July 2010 12:12 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont get why the vocals are so hated! they dont sound very flight of the conchords to me at all

max, Thursday, 29 July 2010 16:49 (thirteen years ago) link

they're a bit crappy tho, this would be really classic for me if they had gotten somebody else to sing. the woman that sings on some of them

yeah sorry i think some of the mungo jet set vocals are worse

Bangelo, Thursday, 29 July 2010 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

white male falsetto is fine, just not this guys one

plax (ico), Thursday, 29 July 2010 17:19 (thirteen years ago) link

taste gets called into question -- posters getting tetchy

i think it's a combination of terrible lyrics and overly smug vocal delivery that puts this too far into the zany camp for me. musically it's pretty straightforward tech house which i personally think guys like kalabrese or dop are better at, in the hairy-overweight-men-attempt-dorky-sex-vocal stakes. but this is just a personal opinion

不合作的方式 (r1o natsume), Thursday, 29 July 2010 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link

actually the vocalist from dop has an excellent voice so maybe this is a bad example

不合作的方式 (r1o natsume), Thursday, 29 July 2010 17:21 (thirteen years ago) link

but anyway all this thread is about is how this album makes the op happy, so please forgive my negativity itt

不合作的方式 (r1o natsume), Thursday, 29 July 2010 17:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Hrmmm. It appears that the whole thing is on YouTube, so I'm listening in. There are a couple of tracks (mostly the ones posted on this thread already) but the others aren't really grabbing me. Not wacky ENOUGH.

The falsetto doesn't bother me, it's quite expressive and tuneful, really. But the lack of cheese on this one... I think I might get bored of it a bit quickly.

^^^^^ Forever. That and dude's remix of "Love Endeavour" are the music playing in heaven.

Tim F, Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:01 (thirteen years ago) link

xp negativity is fine itt, just find it interesting what types of vocals can polarize people. this thread is not about how the album makes me happy so much as it is about the album! i tend to appreciate polarizing albums far more than unanimously acclaimed ones anyhow, really doesn't rain on my parade at all.

and while i like the vocal approach of dOP/noze/etc, i think this album is really something else entirely. things are much more overtly pop-oriented, they aim more for a vague sense of humor rather than a sense of impending weirdness or textured vocal tricks. comparing O&K to that stuff just doesn't work for me, but i can 100% understand why one would prefer the impending weirdness to hammy lines about biscuits and cheese. i like both.

ohh and speaking of maurice fulton, how do people feel about that mim souleiman album? perhaps for another thread, but i feel like those vocals might be divisive also? i can only handle the dub mix on the single i've heard, but i'll probably buy the album at some point anyway. just cause... i mean, maurice fulton!
