Japandroids - C or D?, or, 2010 and we still don't have a Japandroids thread...

This was inspired by picking up the new 7" ("Younger Us" b/w "Sex and Dying in High Society") today, along with their No Singles compilation. The new 7" is great, but its been the comp that is the real revelation for me. It doesn't reach the highs of Post-Nothing, but I feel like it might just be a consistently better record than the debut. We'll see how it holds up over time though.

Still feels a bit too early to call them a solid "classic", but both 2010 singles point to good stuff yet to come.

i haven't heard "Sex and Dying." Is it a X cover?

/\/K/\/\, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 18:50 (2 years ago) Permalink

It is. But this is where I have to hang my head in shame, as I'm unfamiliar with that particular X song (and most of their discography, to be honest - before my time I guess) so I can't tell you how it stacks up. I like the song for sure.

This is my favorite current band by far. I've been trying to push Post-Nothing onto lots of people, and so far I've heard nothing but praise.. However ILM doesn't seem to care.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 00:33 (2 years ago) Permalink

Well I can tell you that there were three ILXors including myself at a Japandroids show last summer but none of us knew the others were there at the time - we figured it out later. So yeah, there is definitely some love for them around here.

the cool thing about this band is how lovely the guys in it are. i saw them in montreal, last year? i think? and their presence on stage was great, and hilarious. the guitarist behaved more like a rock star than i think any band i have seen. he had a fan pointed at him, so that when he stood up front with his foot up on the amp, his hair would be blowing in the wind. hi-lar-i-ous.

as for their music, it's good but it's true that the album isn't *consistently* good. but they have enough good material from before the album, and the album, that i'm optimistic of them BECOMING classic. atm it's too early for them to be labeled as such.

certainly they are not a dud, though!

marc iv, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 01:25 (2 years ago) Permalink

didn't care about this band b/c the whole deal seemed super lame, then I listened to "Young Hearts Spark Fire," the music spoke for itself, and now I'm thinking of buying the record

markers, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 01:34 (2 years ago) Permalink

if there's anything close to as awesome as "Young Hearts Spark Fire" on the record, I'm sold

Post-Nothing has the best Side B I've heard in a long time.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:04 (2 years ago) Permalink

would love to see them and No Age tour together. that would be a really fun show!

markers, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:25 (2 years ago) Permalink

good band & fun live (i was with marc iv at that show he's describing and the fan/hair effect was actually fucking hilarious) but imo there's a lot of quite a bit better rawk music that came out last year. all lies ep is the best 'droids release and i think they put those songs on no singles

"Wet Hair" and "I Quit Girls" are the songs that will stick with me the longest, I think.

Evan, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:23 (2 years ago) Permalink

Crazy/forever is the shit .. I love how so many of their songs are just 1 or 2 lines of lyrics on repeat.

billstevejim, Thursday, 29 July 2010 21:51 (2 years ago) Permalink

Sovereignty for me. "I'm leaving Vancouver, and I don't give a fuck, cos I'm far from home tonight" pops into my head at least a couple of times a week. Saw them in Brighton and they were really good although the venue was shite. Second half of Post Nothing is blistering.

I know this was leaked like a month ago but sometimes it takes me that long to get into their songs. Also cool PJ Harvey cover.

Once again I'm bumping with no real insight, but the "Sex And Dying In High Society" cover is A+.

ok so it's a TWO PIECE from CANADA called ""JAPANDROIDS"" who write songs with EMO titles like YOUNG HEARTS SPARK FIRE and it's not THE YEAR 2000???

TS: Japandroids v Japancakes

Gukbe, Saturday, 20 November 2010 21:06 (2 years ago) Permalink

Japandroids > Japanther >>> Japancakes

And, uh, these guys aren't emo. Try not to completely dismiss a band when you haven't heard 'em.

1 year passes...

New one is like Hold Steady meets Husker Du. Or vice versa.

if the formula contained only Hold Steady and Husker Du it was better. the problem is the emo vocals imo.
i like the loud, never ending guitar chords and the Gun Club cover is awesome.

i dunno who these guys are before, and i didn't like the original song, but i like this cover.

also, kexp sounds really good for college radio. i'm used to college radio live recordings sounding like boomboxes.
the dick dale one sounds great, too.

I just got their new 7-inch in the mail... I love how the packages always come with airheads candy. It's such a nice little bonus.
