Taylor Swift’s highly-anticipated third studio album will be released worldwide on October 25th, Taylor herself announced this afternoon during a web chat with her fans.
Entitled SPEAK NOW, the album will be released on Big Machine Records and contains 14 tracks, all written solely by Taylor. Taylor co-produced the project with Nathan Chapman, and the first single from the new record, “Mine,” will be released on August 16th.
“Saying the right thing at the right moment is so crucial that most of us start to hesitate, for fear of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. But lately what I've begun to fear more than that is letting the moment pass without saying anything,” Taylor says of the very personal collection that is Speak Now. “These songs are made up of words I didn't say when the moment was right in front of me. These songs are open letters. Each is written with a specific person in mind, telling them what I meant to tell them in person.”
Starting on August 20th, Speak Now will be available for special pre-sale on the site www.SpeakNow13.com.

same producer as the other two albums = good thing! she's on a winning streak, why change it up now?
also looking at the producer's credits, I see a bunch of Taylor Swift productions, a Train remix, and:
2008 John Oates 1000 Miles of Life (Acoustic Guitar)
which I thought was amusing given all the talk about Hall & Oates on ILM recently.

In retrospect the stylistic/tonal shift between the first two albums was handled really organically, I'd like to think the further increases in fame/fortune/pressure since then won't have caused her to start second guessing her approach.

I fantasized that this would be solely solo-writes because obviously she kept the co-writers around as a favour before.
Can't wait, but a little pissed that none of the zealous webchat-participants asked about the musical side of the album and if there's the same development as s/t -> Fearless in the shift Tim F describes.

this is great. taylor how could i have doubted you.
lol @ how she makes it Very Clear that she's not in high school any more, toto - the very first line = "you were in COLLEGE", and then talking about BILLS TO PAY in the second verse.
the chorus is incredible - "you made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter" made me gasp.

^^^that line is incredible. her writing is definitely maturing.
and I love the switch of p.o.v. to him at the end with the rising backround vocals.

until now, obv
I hate to say it, but I'm a little disappointed. There are some great lines, but it seems like Taylor is on autopilot. Its Love Story, or Our Song all over again, down to the POV shift. The major change seems to be an insertion of more mature signifiers.
Of course, Taylor on autopilot also means great melody, bridge, and performance. I just hope she pushes herself in more surprising ways on the album.

Right. Wrote this accidentally in the other thread first, but since then I've listened to 'Mine' about 15 times or so, so I guess she's still got it.
Seconding the hope that she pushes herself musically a little, but there's more texture in the production here to some extent, and she's pointing the finger back at herself more than she sometimes did on Fearless.
It might be 'Mary's Song' redux but I'm sort of ok with that.

a.) like the song, love the chorus -- sets itself up to need a big hook and deliversb.) i don't think it's autopilot, the lyrics are carefully crafted. and there's more obvious invention than before, which was always going to be the challenge here -- she can't keep writing seemingly-autobiographical teen-girl stuff, she has to imagine her way into grown-up characters who aren't giant pop stars. c.) nothing about this song makes me anticipate the album any less

― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 5 August 2010 20:15 (2 years ago) Permalink
what i love about the song is that it feels like she has to be convinced again and again, like the first rush of optimism doesn't quite take properly, which rings v true w/r/t the character. the second iteration of the chorus ("you saw me start to believe for the first time") is clearly some time after "you put your arms around me for the first time", and THEN comes the big fight at the climax of the song. it's love as an adult process rather than love as a high school dream.
also "there's a drawer of my things at your place" is such a fantastically casual way to put those purity ring accusations to rest.

"Ours" is all over my local country station & ah ha I see why! it's #1 on the country charts this week. I thought it was slight on first listens but like e.g. New Order the melody won't leave me alone & now the words don't seem so slight either.
― Euler, Monday, 26 March 2012 23:51 (1 year ago) Permalink
Always thought "Ours" was slight as well, but that it had unbelievable charm (see also: "Stay Beautiful"), and after "Mean" it seemed like the only truly twang-ish song for country radio. But even slight Swift means a lovely melody and deceptively simple words that accrue resonance as the song's narrative progresses ("People throw rocks at things that shine" shouldn't work, but it really devastates me). Also the video w/ Matt Saracen melts me even though the end feels like pandering.
Re: "Safe & Sound": it's a good look on her I think, and while it may be more tone than tune, the tone is lovely and, as Lex said, really devastating in the right moment.
I've been struggling with "Eyes Open" because it feels so obviously like The Song That Tells The Movie's Story, Possibly While The End Credits Roll, and I haven't felt her music to be this rote since "Change," but I think she sings it very well, and I guess it's a little interesting how the lyric can double as "cautionary tale of fame."
