One of my favourite labels of recent years. also, for euros, a lot of the recent Woodsist releases are on spotify http://open.spotify.com/search/label%3a%22woodsist%22

Woods & Ganglians are my 2 faves but I just got the art museums lp and I'm enjoying it.

I wish fuckittapes releases didn't sell out so damn quick. (only have a pocahaunted tape,Gospel and some warmer milks) Thankfully I finally managed to be on the ball and got the new woodsist bands compilation tape. most of the songs are previously unreleased.

So anyone else a fan of the label?

some. Kurt Vile's Constant Hitmaker is a favorite, but I guess that's really a reissue as it came out on CD on Gulcher originally (dig the White Fence too but it's the same thing as the LP came out on Make A Mess originally). Love The Fresh & Onlys LP, like Moon Duo OK, Real Estate is growing on me, but I can't really get behind Woods or Ganglians.

chromecassettes, Sunday, 6 June 2010 14:12 (2 years ago) Permalink

I like the Real Estate and Moon Duo albums a lot too. Not heard any Kurt Vile.

Blues Control - Puff is great

Sun Araw is pretty cool although I don't own those records

good 7"s by Sic Alps, Thee Oh Sees, Vivian Girls

dmr, Sunday, 6 June 2010 14:34 (2 years ago) Permalink

Oh Sees Tidal Wave 7" is great. And the Magic Lantern lp is my favorite out of the Woodsist lot.

Jews Newton (van smack), Sunday, 6 June 2010 16:26 (2 years ago) Permalink

The Herbcraft on the new woodsist subsidiary "Hello Sunshine" is very good imo. Droning fuzz guitar indie-sike. "Puff" is awesome indeed. I like the last Woods record better than the new one, but that one I haven't spent much time with.

ian, Sunday, 6 June 2010 16:30 (2 years ago) Permalink

Woods Family Creeps is my favourite of all the woods releases.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 6 June 2010 16:33 (2 years ago) Permalink

I really enjoy the Meth Teeth album on Woodsist too.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 6 June 2010 16:34 (2 years ago) Permalink

i like almost all the soundscans i've been listening to on woodsist's label page on emusic.

the label's bands have a similar aesthetic, i think.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 6 June 2010 16:36 (2 years ago) Permalink

Shit, I forgot all about Blues Control's Puff LP. That's a great one.

chromecassettes, Sunday, 6 June 2010 23:27 (2 years ago) Permalink

Yeah I have that one too!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 6 June 2010 23:27 (2 years ago) Permalink

have liked a ton of stuff on woodsist over the past few years. including reissues and whatnot, most especially: kurt vile - constant hitmaker, blues control - puff, woods - songs of shame and the fresh & onlys - grey-eyed girls. plus some great singles by idle times, pink reason, sic alps, eat skull, fergus & geronimo and real estate. on the fence about ganglians. the woodsist lp/ep/whatever is didn't do much for me, but i dig monster head room on weird forest. haven't heard the meth teeth lp or the new woods.

been interesting to watch the shift from the more "difficult" drone/noise-leaning woodsist circa 06/07 -- putting out stuff by racoo-oo-oon, night wounds and blues control -- to the more garage/pop oriented woodsist of the last couple years.

Trip Maker, Monday, 7 June 2010 03:40 (2 years ago) Permalink

I'm a big Woodsist fan. Woods & Ganglians of course. White Fence is among my favorites of 2010 at this point. Moon Duo is an excellent Wooden Shjips offshoot. The Fresh & Onlys releases are all tres-cool, as is the Mayfair Set. Eat Skull is mindblowingly righteous skuzzpunk. Psychedelic Horseshit & Meth Teeth are crazed boiling lunacy. Wavves & Magic Lantern are killin' it. Crystal Stilts have put out some of my favorite tunes over the last couple of years. Offhand, the only band from the Woodsist orbit I'm having trouble liking is prolly Blank Dogs. The synth/pop/wave scene has never been my cuppa tea for the most part.

ImprovSpirit, Monday, 7 June 2010 04:15 (2 years ago) Permalink

I think I better check out Kurt Vile then. Never heard Ariel Pink either so i guess i better get to it. Magic Lantern are awesome. Funnily enough i couldnt get into the psychedelic horseshit stuff i heard.

yeah, but it seems a natural shift though.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 7 June 2010 11:10 (2 years ago) Permalink

I'd count myself as a fan of Woods, Real Estate, Eat Skull Psych. Horseshit, Crystal Stilts, Blank Dogs, Moon Duo... not sure which of those have released stuff on the Woodsist label that I've heard, but I enjoy all of 'em to some degree.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 7 June 2010 14:04 (2 years ago) Permalink

Methinks all of those have released at least one thing on Woodsist.

ImprovSpirit, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:05 (2 years ago) Permalink

Oh yeah, Sean OTM--that Folk Spectre LP on woodsist is great! And the new one, on Arbitrary Signs, is even better.

ian, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:47 (2 years ago) Permalink

I'll have to check that out, Ian.

Trip Maker, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:48 (2 years ago) Permalink

It's funny how "Spectre" and "Folk" alternate positions in the band name.
It's Pete Nolan, btw, folks.

Trip Maker, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:50 (2 years ago) Permalink

and pete nolan, btw, is the drummer for magic markers. folks. ;)

it's funny when i was talking to Jeremy last time he brought in records, he was talking about how the Hello Sunshine imprint was going to be for the dronier, weirder, more 'out' side of things, and how ironic it is that just a few years ago woodsist was putting out Pocahaunted records and shit. ("peyote road" is actually prob the best thing I've heard from them.)

ian, Monday, 7 June 2010 17:05 (2 years ago) Permalink

Pete Nolan, btw, is severely awesome. I think he has been in something like 73 bands over the last few years.

blues control - puff

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 10 June 2010 12:33 (2 years ago) Permalink

I side with Edward where Blues Control is concerned. It thrills me when a band can take recognizeable influences & mold them into a new form.

chromecassettes, Friday, 11 June 2010 14:01 (2 years ago) Permalink

Saw this in the latest Eclipse Records update, figured it was worth mentioning on the thread:
*Acoustic Family Creeps - Acoustic Family Creeps one-sided LP $15.99 (Acoustic Family Creeps)
"One sided, bootleg-style twelve inch that may very well be Brookylns own Woods, caught live in Europe. No listed record label, no B-side, no repress. Weve seen these for sale at Woods shows so they may be legit, although the world is ripe with mystery. Very limited."

Trip Maker, Friday, 11 June 2010 14:15 (2 years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I have that 12". Got it in Monorailmusic in Glasgow.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 11 June 2010 14:16 (2 years ago) Permalink

Thanks for the heads-up on the Acoustic Family Creeps

ImprovSpirit, Friday, 11 June 2010 14:39 (2 years ago) Permalink

saw a used copy of the folk spectre lp the other day for cheap, and picked it up due to mentions on this thread. sounding great atm, very aptly named. cool combo of dead c./shadow ring dust scrape and groovier fsa/tower recordings tones. both spacious and crushed. thanks for the heads up.

1 year passes...

did anybody go to the fest?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 19:18 (1 year ago) Permalink

I'd be interested to hear how it was. friend of mine is planning to try to go next year. saw Woods on Saturday in Manhattan, decent set but short ... only played about 60 mins including a couple long jams that were borderline filler. (to be fair one of the jams toward the end of the set was p killer and I do like that space-rock side of them as much as the song-y side.) one-song encore was just "Military Madness" and then they're out.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:24 (1 year ago) Permalink

Out of all those bands Mantles are the least active and rarely tour so they are even more of a "get" IMO. White Fence albums are very nice, but their live show is a lot more aggressive (full band) and I dig it. If I was in Cali I would definitely go to this. Maybe Hurley is gonna do an album on Woodsist? Only thing missing is Some MV/EE or Matt Valentine solo action.

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:31 (1 year ago) Permalink

They did it 2 summers ago, there were a series of "Woodsist Festival" shows in addition to the Big Sur fest. Saw Real Estate, Woods, Kurt Vile, Sun Araw, Mantles, Art Museums, Nodzzz and some Vivian Girls one-off at The Echo in LA. For selfish reasons I wish they would do a freaking New York Woodsist Fest again.

if you head up to big sur early or want to just try for it I would rec that you get a first come first serve site at andrew molera. This is prob the cheapest option and while the sites themselves are just like in an empty meadow its right next to a beach and close to the library.

Fernwood is pretty alright for a private campsite so I would hop on it if there aren't any state park options. Pfeiffer's incredible if you can get a spot in the redwoods, but this fills up super quick, may be some availability now. These three are all pretty close to the venue. Kirk creek is generally considered the best park to camp at of all of these but it's about 40 mins to an hour from the venue and not easy to get a site there. There are couple other public and private places that are cheap that I've never stayed at, but I know some of the other state ones are kind of inland and a bitch to get to.

I am prob not as well versed as a lot of other people here but that's what I got
