This is a track I feel like everyone has been talking about but I can't find a thread. Tim wrote a nice piece on Skykicking, but I'm wondering what everone else thinks.

Seriously fun music & probably my favorite single of this year. Is the B-side just as good? What else have these guys put out?

I disagree about the length of the track -- but I'm somebody who, when a song consists of a long build to a single peak, likes to to delay the payoff as long as possible. I'm not sure that singing at the end would sound as good 4 minutes in.

It is kind of the the ultimate track in terms of Song as Music Criticism -- very funny references, and one that only serious music geeks could understand (not many know what would be great about seeing Can in Cologne in 1968).

1st part - vocals are so Fall but the soniX of the beat are modern/fuzz/casio --> 2nd part REVERSES this --> vocals become dancey and the beat becomes rock n roll - I fink it's KEEN

The guy behind it is apparently the producer of The Rapture's "House Of Jealous Lovers", which is *my* favourite single of the year (or well up there anyway) (and no I don't care if it was last year: my edge is long gone).

I love it but I was pissed off nobody noticed I quoted it when I was impersonating Jade from BB3 in another thread.

I also got completely tied in knots trying to describe it as retro/not retro and old/not old, I'd have another go at categorising it but frankly, its not a pretty sight.

Oh OK then. Anyone remember 'Malcolm X No Sell Out'?

the second song on the LCD promo (name of the track is escaping me) is a little better than "Loosing My Edge." Its got a rad jungle beat to it, with real fun synth work on top of it.

If you all could speak portuguese, Ponto Chic's "Alguem Aí" is way funnier than "Losing My Edge". It all goes thru the fact that while in Losing My Edge we are laughing WITH the singer of the hip kids and the parody while on Alguem Aí you are laughing AT the singer for trying to find another smelly indie that does the same things as he does. And the guy talks in a really low voice, wich is way funnier

There's actually two Juan Maclean 12"s--the really good one is "You Can't Have It Both Ways."

This past weekend, I put together a mix CD w/ three of the DFA singles (though I used "Beat Connection" instead of "Losing My Edge"), plus "Too Many Creeps," "Future Shock (Dance Your Pants Off)," "Do the Du," "Yopparai," "Tell You (Today)," etc. The people I've given it to seem to like it a lot...

It's brilliant! Love the way the electro beat *bleeds* into the rock beat, the way the bassline morphs into a distorted guitar. So much tension - for six minutes it builds and builds while struggling to retain the groove, then explodes! It's sooo post-punk: ephemeral good-time groovy music turned into serious-statement-progressing- rock, and yet it's all a joke, so it's kind of post-modern too, without negating its power in the slightest. Dammit, I need to hear the B side!

The b-side ("Beat Connection") is better. My comments regarding the band's rhythmic ability were based more on this track than on "Losing My Edge" (which I still luv mind you). I don't hear jungle so much though (unless Brock's talking about a different track) - more like a toughened up ESG in complete disco mode (w. bongos even! - maybe that's what Brock's talking about) before going 2-step briefly, before going rock-disco a la "House Of Jealous Lovers" and "Danger! High Voltage!", before going sort of Talking Heads meets Neu! The vocals are all wailing garage-rock too, which as Tom said about The Rapture and The Wildbunch, sounds much better in this sort of context. If "Losing My Edge" is a novelty track with oddly great music, "Beat Connection" is *all about* the great music.

I thought that Marcello's comments were marvellous (seriously much better than mine - go read them instead).

One problem w/ this song though is how limited the appeal is. I know that's part of the theme, but I have friends that I'd love to play it for but the references will mean nothing to them. Forced Exposure says something about it being a floor-filler, but can you really see a roomful of people dancing to it?

Losing My Edge is the best thing I've heard this year without doubt. House of the Jealous Lovers may yet grow on me.

I had a real moment with Losing My Edge, my friend had gone to park his car on Saturday and I was in the bar waiting for him to come back and it came on. I hadn't heard it before and I knew it had to be it, it was long enough that my friend got back and was able to be impressed aswell. Fantastic. And I have no frame of reference with the Fall or Talking Heads or anyone but nonetheless, fantastic. (I did think it was a bit like Alex Gopher)

Finally picked up the four DFA singles after having a couple tracks on MP3 and still think the Geist version of "House of Jealous Lovers" is the best of all. (I would say that, wouldn't I?) After that it's probably "Beat Connection" and then one or two of the Juan Maclean productions.

Boy, the last few Six Finger Satellite records still sound great/annoying.

i have listened to the whole song now. it's ok. i was expecting more of a music switch near the end from what was said above. feels similar to 'instant club hit' Best lyric is "borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered 80's". i think i would like it more if i had met somebody like whom they are describing. 8 mins is a bit long to listen to casio beat, but i agree it probably wouldn't work much shorter.

Did anyone pick up the Shame 69/Negativland 7", 'No Business'? It's madshit hilarious; the Negativland side cuts up 'No Business Like Show Business', dropping new lyrics about artistic thievery. Still listen to those DFA Compilation #1 and #2 collections a few times a year. Really great all around - LCD, Black Dice, Juan Maclean, Delia and Gavin/Black Leotard Front, the Rapture, Liquid Liquid, etc.

this was v iconic but house of jealous lovers was really amazing mixed in with all the shit that people might have called electro or whatever before the name became tainted, it was so physical. no rock record will ever have that impact again.

that is a very good article. i especially like the quotes from james murphy discussing how the song was born of his own fears about the declining social value of music knowledge in an era of "internet seekers" who can track down obscure information relatively easily. the song is definitely a landmark.
