Hooray! I bought 'DI Go Pop' today for $16 (Australian - pretty cheap!) So let's celebrate with a thread on this band.
Thoughts after first listen: this is CLASSIC. These guys did post-rock the right way - they built on MBV's innovations and went further out of the realm of rock, without going all dull and small and characterless like most Tortoise and Trans Am. It's not electronica though - doesn't groove, it vibrates and wavers. Great mixture of sick noise and pretty noise. Reminded me of a more serious Position Normal at one point. Skewed melodies create a great mixture of sad/nostalgic and fucked-up/disturbing, a confusing feeling evoked by a lot of great 90s music eg Boards of Canada.
What does everyone else think? And what other DI stuff is worth getting?

I've not heard everything yet (even the mighty Audiogalaxy didn't have all the DI Go Pop era b-sides) But I love DI GO Pop, and Technicolour has its moments.
I've never thought about it before, but the Position Normal comparison definitely strikes a chord, I'll have to listen to that album again.
PS. Ned: You should have a CD winging its way to you at the moment, looking forward to hearing the missing B-Sid

When I first bought D.I go Pop in 07 after much ILM hype I didn't get it, like if Bark Psychosis couldn't play their instruments or whatever (actually the word "dated" crossed my mind!), but then I took it for a walk in my headphones once and since then it has grown on me like mad. CLASSIC!!!
Now I want to hear everything this band recorded... obviously there's some more studio recordings, but are there any good live albums/bootlegs? Would be really cool to hear what they did with this live.

as much as i love the eps to death, they're like little embryos. i really think the masterpiece is di go pop. for me it's where crause's lyrical vision and sonic ambition ultimately manifested. in a horrible horrible disgusting would not wish this upon anyone way it kinda makes sense that they lost all their equipment after this record. the album title makes so much sense, this tiny burst of ephemeral technicolour beauty.

From an interview with one of the guys from No Age on Pfork this morning, regarding new album influences:
Pitchfork: Is there any brighter, more poppy music you have been listening to lately that might be having an influence?RR: Yeah, actually. The Go-Betweens have been on rotation. They have a really interesting sort of sound collage. That and this band Disco Inferno have been two references for us in a lot of ways. There's a fun-ness in there. Disco Inferno is really heavily sample-based, but still has this pop element. There's this record D.I. Go Pop that I have been listening to a lot during the creation of this.

I've still only got In Debt the Meat Puppets play Joy Division cd.I saw them play the White Horse Hampstead in like '91 with the Whipping Boy. Very young guys with custom made instruments & that was before the sample triggering instruments I think. Were pretty good. Che had good taste in the artists they released. They were the label that pretty much launched Bark Psychosis too.(I know BP played my old school, I think after I left. Played a school assembly, I assume with the same drummer Mark though i don't think he attended the same school. But that's Bark Psychosis not DI)

And unfortunately I have no news there.
But, in a nice touch, there's now another band that's covered them -- Should, a long-established/long-quiet post-punk/gaze band who have released their first album in over a decade:
http://www.words-on-music.com/WM32.html
"Broken" was what they covered -- nice version, it's not on that page for preview from what I can tell.

One of my favourite moments in music is that bit in "The Long Dance" towards the end and immediately after Crause sings "... but now my eyes point ahead / away from the ghosts of the dead", where the arrangement seems to warp and flex with this burbling that feels like the emergent guitar solo literally pushing its way through the surface of the song. And then the guitar solo does arrive and it's so impossibly happy and sad at the same time, it really captures the intermingled sense of hope and hopelessness the song tackles lyrically, the former so frail and chimeric, a flickering flame you have to protect because what other option do you have.
I have no idea whether the band ever listened to Fleetwood Mac but the structure of the song and the function and feel of the solo remind me a lot of e.g. "Gypsy" or "Eyes of the World".
(this is broadly true of "The Last Dance" as well, but the extended version really leans into the above so satisfyingly)
― Tim F, Tuesday, 23 January 2024 00:36 (two years ago)
A fascinating comparison and not inapt. That they could so easily sit on the break between then and now in multiple ways still astonishes me.

(funnily enough was thinking of them and Fleetwood Mac on a re-listen a few months back - probably conflation of the seagull samples and the guitar line, but "Summer's Last Sound" was invoking "Albatross")
