I've heard Dave Shouse's Those Bastard Souls(6/10) and read that Scott Taylor was involved in some 'project' or other, but nothing i've heard gets close to 'One Sock Missing'or 'ain't my Lookout'. Anybody out there got the lowdown or care to steer me in the direction of any other drunken, romancer, posi-neg, alt tuner, slack/ intenser bands out there...?

The closest I've come is Califone/Red Red Meat. Perhaps the Grifters were shit to everybody else? Seem to remember Ain't my Lookout getting a massive 3/10 in the NME, but what the F. do they know?

The last release to grab my pathetic senses was desaparecidos (sp?) but that's not quite what I'm getting at.

I'll Be chuffed with any responses.

Another Grifters fan did me a copy of "One sock missing" a while back. I can't remember it doing anything for me then but I'll dig it out and give it another listen.

I'll find out what he recommends. I know he did me a copy of the first Jack album (Which is very good but surely a totally different thing) and he did me a couple of compilations, some parts of which were brilliant but without a track listing I'm not sure what they were. I'll get back to this thread tomorrow, hopefully with more info.

The "Corolla Heist" 7"...Christ that was great stuff.

David SHouse is now with the Bloodthirsty Lovers. They don't remind me of the Grifters, but I enjoy them immensly.

Frankly it's a bleedin' miracle they made it as long/far as they did, given all the circumstances. RIP.

I still think 'Ain't my Lookout' proved that The Grifters were The Big Star of our time. Time will be kind to them and time will be harsh towards to all poor reviwers that didn't get it.

eight months pass...
I'll second that. Ain't My Lookout is the high point for the Grifters, but I like everything they ever did...

I also stand by the answers in the thread Tracer Hand linked. Short version: they rule.

Those who are disturbed by sacrilege do not follow this link: http://www.thegrifters.com/theband.html

Here's an actual Grifters site, which claims they're playing; however, there's much confusion over the site in general: http://home.c2i.net/grifter/

And Lee G, if you're still around, could you elaborate on your cryptic reference to "circumstances"?

so, has anyone heard the Bloodthirsty Lovers? I liked the first Those Bastard Souls record (20th Century Chemical) a lot, but wasn't so keen on the second.

Hypothetically, "circumstances" could = bandmembers sleeping with other bandmembers' wives and not trying to hide it. Hypothetically, of course.

I disagree with Lookout being the high point - anyone remember the Eureka EP? I still listen to that one.

Dave Shouse is doing The Bloodthirsty Lovers, a three-piece band -- pretty art-rock stuff with some electronica elements, even further away from the Grifters than Those Bastard Souls was. They've got a record out (the record is basically Shouse solo). It's eponymously titled. It's real good. They've been touring alot.

Scott Taylor is playing guitar, though not really singing or writing much, in a new band call Porch Ghouls, a really lo-fi blues band whose debut, Bluff City Ruckus, just came out a few weeks ago -- on a major label! They're the first band Joe "Aerosmith" Perry signed for his Columbia vanity label, Roman Records. Porch Ghouls are okay, but not as good as the Lovers, and Taylor isn't the main force.

Trip Lampkins is playing around in local Memphis bands some, most notably a mostly cover band called The Villains.

Stan Gallimore is out of the music biz, as far as I know.

"most soulful drunk rock band ever"? Probably not even the most soulful drunk rock band ever from Memphis -- that'd be the Oblivians.

incidentally, the Grifters got back together a year or so ago and did several local gigs (and a few out of town) and were better than ever. It looked like there might be another Grifters record on the horizen, but it never happened and probably won't.
