ILX Wire Covers Compilation 2010

Okay let's do this thing. There seems to about eight people interested so far.

Stake your claim to titles here (of course it doesn't matter if two ILXors want to cover the same song.)

Once we've gotten the list together we can then discuss timings etc:

So, first off I plant my flag in 'Boiling Boy', it was the first Wire V2 song I heard (the Peel session version) loved it unreservedly then felt a bit let down by the proper album version, although the one on IBTABA was better. Had to wait ages for it be released on Coatings.

Joe Pass Filter (MaresNest), Saturday, 13 February 2010 08:42 (fourteen years ago) link

i will definitely be involved, but will need to confer with my musical compadre as to what song to do

twice remembered / twice removed (electricsound), Saturday, 13 February 2010 08:49 (fourteen years ago) link

If he doesn't do "Dot Dash", make a video of it including his Dot Dash Dance and put it up on YouTube, I'll fly down and glass him.

Hangin' with Tommy Cooper (King Boy Pato), Saturday, 13 February 2010 08:53 (fourteen years ago) link

I've got "I am the fly"

Fetchboy, Saturday, 13 February 2010 09:00 (fourteen years ago) link

and what would you do if this ended up with a series of gently ironic nouvelle vague type pastoral tropicalia pink flag covers?

nakhchivan, Saturday, 13 February 2010 15:37 (fourteen years ago) link

He would shrug and say "What a well-made world."

On the other thread Sean C. suggested I do "Ambitious," which I'm more than fine with -- if someone else does the music.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 February 2010 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link

(Not a slam on Sean of course! More meaning that my own musical abilities are immeasurable in their nonexistence.)

Count me in on this, I'll choose a song in the next day or so. Um, are instrumental versions of vocal songs ok? My skills do NOT lie in singing.

Ork Alarm (Matt #2), Saturday, 13 February 2010 17:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Vocoder!

Joe Pass Filter (MaresNest), Saturday, 13 February 2010 18:07 (fourteen years ago) link

i think i'm up for this. i'll give it a try anyway.

da Wesley CRUSHER (latebloomer), Saturday, 13 February 2010 19:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I think I'll do either "Brazil" or "Being Sucked In Again"

da Wesley CRUSHER (latebloomer), Saturday, 13 February 2010 19:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Want to do "Ahead"!

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 13 February 2010 22:28 (fourteen years ago) link

(Not a slam on Sean of course!

Well I never!

More meaning that my own musical abilities are immeasurable in their nonexistence.)

Oh okay then. But hey, you have my permission to do any song you like.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 13 February 2010 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Already done 'Ex Lion Tamer', 'Silk Skin Paws' and C. Newman's 'Alone' with band.

'Ahead' has been taken... Maybe 'A Serious of Snakes'... Will get back on this.

hmm. I may join in. If I do it'll prob be "French Film Blurred"

François de Roobabe (Capitaine Jay Vee), Sunday, 14 February 2010 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Question: is the listing the same songs that were covered on "Whore", or is it free for all as far as which Wire songs?

millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Sunday, 14 February 2010 23:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Anything I'm guessing.

Anyone going to take 'Mary Is A Dyke' or 'NYC'?

Department of Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification (S-), Sunday, 14 February 2010 23:43 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm thinking me and Rob might do one - I'd like to do "Kidney Bingoes" or "King of Ur & Queen of Um" but I need to skim some tracks and decide, so thats just a tentative one for me so far.

millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Sunday, 14 February 2010 23:44 (fourteen years ago) link

'Our Swimmer' pls

I could try that Pato, but a). High beam switch in current car is foot operated, not on a stalk b). Chrysler is more than double the size of the Toyota (however power steering), will need to find a different rhythm c). Having already spent some time without a licence it might not be such a Good Idea.

can i join in please? i don't know 100% what song yet welcome suggestions!

What's the deadline going to be? I'd like to do "Marooned." Or "French Film Blurred" if Jay Vee drops out.

actually changed my mind, doing 'The 15th'!!

Changed my mind, also. I'd like to do "Go Ahead" off Doc/Eyewitness

François de Roobabe (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 15 February 2010 02:28 (fourteen years ago) link

OK, I'm in and I'm on for "Too Late"

Mark G, Monday, 15 February 2010 09:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Here is our list so far, including the undecided.

Fetchboy - I Am The Fly
M Bison - 12XU
MaresNest - Boiling Boy
Latebloomer - Brazil or Being Sucked In Again
Sean C - Ahead
Elvis Telecom - Marooned
Matt#2 - Practice Makes Perfect
Paul In Santa Cruz/Ned Ragget - Ambitious
Capitaine Jay Vee - Go Ahead
(S-) - Our Swimmer
Trayce - Kidney Bingos or The King of Ur and the Queen of Um
Ken C - The 15th
Mark G - Too Late

Like I mentioned upthread, don't get hung up if more than one person wants to do a particular track, the difference in interpretation would be just as interesting.

To answer Trayce, any Wire song is fair game. Heck if you wanted to do version of a Colin Newman/Duet Emmo/Mzui/Dome/8Time or any other solo configuration go right ahead.

Also, what do you all think would be a fair deadline? (which will of course be broken) One month? Two?

Hopefully before the titles for the next U2 album are leaked!

So for anyone who might be speeding ahead, send files or rapidshare/ftp links to my PM addy. Best quality files possible would be great, WAV/FLAC/AIFF/SHN whatever.

If MP3 then please ensure it's as close to 320kbps as you can get. Don't forget to include any details you might want for the artwork/text.

Hey Wire songs are really easy to work out, I never realised! The last thing a did for a tribute record was by Moondog, that was a bitch. Doing something different with a Wire song that's still good rather than a slavish cover version, not so easy.

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 20:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Although I take it a No Line On The Horizon-style (hell, ILX Has A Bucket-style) original compositions project isn't on anyone's mind? Maybe the challenge could be to do the DI one in a matter of days.

Can't we just...create? Ah fine, I'm down for this. Something off 'Technicolour', not sure what yet

(Working For A Nuclear Free City are about to release an album with looooads of tracks, not that anyone except Ned and I actually care)

Reasons I don't want to do this:

1) I had a fantastic time doing this, it was like christmas every time a track arrived, and barring a few technicalities (i.e. a couple of tracks that were too long) I was able to incorporate everything I received into the final tracklisting, and every track was wonderful. It's not that 'you shouldn't revisit, next time would not be as good' it's more that someone else should have that kind of fun.

2) I was going to contribute a track last time, but ran out of time and/or inspiration, I forget which. Also, I would be either biased towards (or against) my track's placement (or lack of it), etc. Someone else needs to make that kind of decision.

3) Thesedays, I have less of an ILX presence. Having said that, if someone does kick Vol4 off, they'd better let me know. I missed out on the U2 and the Wire comps, but hey.

So, it's up for grabs.

Hmm, I might repost that message on a dedicated thread.
