OTM re: slow motion house
I should probably check out the Urban Tribe and, when I can, put off buying the actress album finally.
― There's Money To Be Made in Ice Cream (EDB), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:25 (2 years ago) Permalink
actress is definitely going to be in the strong running for album of the year. it might also go down as being on the level of the first urban tribe album or it might be deeply overhyped. it's definitely better than the usual stuff that draws urban tribe comparisons (thomas fehlmann? sheesh) ... if urban tribe was like an intensely weeded-out detroit techno take on leftfield/IDM/downtempo 90s sound, actress is like an equivalent UK techno take on leftfield 00s dance music. i can definitely listen to it. again and again.
really, really feeling but with great trepidation: linkwood, firecracker, prime numbers, etc. good instincts and i like their sound but they are one more kaidi tatham collab away from turning into the 10s version of broken beat, which is exactly what all of this "micro-step" / new dubstep crap is too. it is good to see the association with actress and motor city drum ensemble, though like linkwood and firecracker he seems like he's sort of hibernating. also funny to see andres around - reminds me of trus'me because i'm still not sure if the last trus'me thing was actually a "black mahogani ii" style meltdown or just an amp fiddler style letdown

i'm totally with you on the robert johnson vol 4. what other comps has gerd janson done besides that one and the computer incarnations for world peace series? and i know next to nothing about his productions, any guidance on where to start with those?
and i think we were talking about actress on the dance partisans thread. didn't expect to like that album nearly as much as i did, it's a nice variety of styles that all happen to fit with my taste. particularly like "always human" and "maze"

and linkwood was awesome in sf last friday. have you heard the latest firecracker thing?
― a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:34 (2 years ago) Permalink
the vakula ep is what i was referring to, but there's a lot of other stuff on here and it all sounds pretty rad to me tbh - http://soundcloud.com/firecracker-recordings
― a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:41 (2 years ago) Permalink
no, i am waiting to buy it on itunes. i haven't actually liked the other vakula stuff i've heard that much but maybe i've heard the wrong stuff.
i've been really getting into the firecracker EPs 1-4 since i've been listening to mp3s a lot lately and i happened to be able to buy those off itunes. and same with the linkwood LP. just now revealing hidden layers of genius, now that i'm a little more familiar with the songs and what they've chosen to do - where at first i was just looking for competent detroit house homages - i'm appreciating better how good they are at those things and appreciating the cool subtle craftsmanship and tricks in their tracks.
prime numbers stuff actually hasn't sounded as good to me since one early november morning, deeply hungover, dozing in my parked car at 4 am, watching streetlights through the drizzle. but i keep trying.

How I'd love me a copy of the first Firecracker EP. Barely Eagle!
I'd love me a copy of the linkwood album too.
I also meant to say, upthread, that I hope to one day stop putting off buying the actress album. That's been in the cards for me for over a month and a half now.
― There's Money To Be Made in Ice Cream (EDB), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:54 (2 years ago) Permalink
barely eagle is on EP4. first EP has linkwood's "miles away", another linkwood track, fudge fingas sampling marvin gaye track too.
i want to start a thread about the gerd janson comp (he doesn't have any others btw) where we break down track by track where all of the other tracks have shown up. for example, the first four tracks can be found in places like
track 1: an intellinet comp, a definitive recordings comp, and a comp called "latin electrico!"
track 2: comps on choice (purveyors of "sensual deep house for the mind" and "latina beach bar house") and session (idjuts, maurice fulton, chicken lips, faze action, various other nuphonic and paper artists, etc)
track 3: ewan pearson comp, tiga comp
track 4: westbam comps, japanese and dutch hard house comps, subliminal comps, etc
see, i think these sorts of juxtapositions are interesting
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:56 (2 years ago) Permalink
Well, miles away is a good track too!
― There's Money To Be Made in Ice Cream (EDB), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:00 (2 years ago) Permalink
^absolutely. and i think you can probably still find a copy of ep4 on the interwebs someplace, probably the linkwood album too.
also ps- thanks to this thread for inspiring me to listen to my firecracker/prime numbers playlist nonstop for the last day or so

xpost yeah i think the justified hype around OAR003-B has obscured the greatness of the rest of this stuff. and what i mean by that is that i'm really late in listening to the rest of these tracks. damn.
― LA river flood (lukas), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:43 (2 years ago) Permalink
Id say about half the Oni ayhun tracks have been great, the more industrial/experimental ones a lot less successful. OAR004 is the one ive played out most but 3 is definitely the one for the cuddly afterparties

so ... anyone else digging a made up sound this year?
― moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 12 August 2010 06:09 (2 years ago) Permalink
new demdike stare is also insane ... maybe this is the wrong thread for that type of stuff?
― moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 12 August 2010 06:34 (2 years ago) Permalink
would love to be convinced wrt demdike stare but 'symbiosis' never clicked with me for some reason
how do people feel about the roll the dice album? maybe this isn't the perfect thread to discuss it (might have already mentioned it actually), but it's knife/fever ray-related and hits many of the same sweet spots as the recent emeralds and oneohtrix albums, with bits of dub techno mixed in. really well-produced stuff

RTD is legitimately awesome

the made up sound record was in seth troxler's picadilly picks so i call bobbins. The basic soul unit mixes he did slay.
― straightola, Thursday, 12 August 2010 09:07 (2 years ago) Permalink
yes, roll the dice is really great. has kind of a cluster/harmonia vibe goin on. only track i don't really like is "into the ground".
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 12 August 2010 15:41 (2 years ago) Permalink
on first listen i didn't dig the new Demdike Stare as much as Symbiosis, but it might just need some time to sink in.

i had a dream last night i found a detroit techno album i'd never heard before! it was called ... ok i forget already what it was called but the cover was a photo of the moonscape with a green filter, and it was a collaboration between dego and ... someone from detroit. also several of the tracks had morgan geist co-production. i really miss finding new detroit techno.

I think you can stream the whole thing on Soundcloud here
I'm not sure if those are the actual track lengths or not, though.

Yes, and those are the actual track lengths afaik. I like the new album, but I haven't listened enough to pull out any standout favorites.
― mh, Friday, 27 August 2010 15:07 (2 years ago) Permalink
Just listening now, not sure what to make of it really.
If I think of it as a non-Shed, anonymous album by someone I've never heard of it's OK.
The part of me wishing for some more nasty Shedfunk is thinking meh.
