I think Aaron-Carl is one of the more criminally underappreciated house/tech/Detroit heads of our time, despite his hits of the mid-90s. What does everyone else think?

Absolutely love "Simply" from last year.
Agree he is under appreciated.

I love this guy but does he have a decent album? I got Uncloseted but (despite containing the amazing "Homoerotic") it's way patchy.

love that "simply" tune...really nice

i love aaron carl's voice. it's really understated and sensitive, and tends to sit softly beneath the music
this is one of the best melancholy house tracks ever

i like how the vocal sounds like it's being recorded down the phone to his lover

love this one - also his own remix on the "oasis" single too
people feeling aaron-carl should d/l the new manara minimix, which includes him - http://www.discobelle.net/2010/01/20/manara-miracles-mixtape/

Hello there...
I accidentally stumbled across this thread, and wanted to stop in and say THANK YOU... It's very humbling to read the comments written about me and my music. And while I understand that (while I'm just being ME) I can't please EVERYBODY, it IS nice to know that at least you're listening...
And @ Tim F, uh... er... YEAH, I have a decent album. Have you heard "Bittersoulfulsweet?" (The album that contains "Simply.") If not, you should definitely send me an email. I'll send it to you. Why, you ask? Because for starters, I want you to hear the progression from the last one. Again, I know I can't please everybody, and I'm certainly not trying, but I CAN say this... My songs are a TOTAL reflection of my life. Some people understand SOME parts, others don't. It's funny you liked "Homoerotic" because believe it or not, it was the ONE song on the album that I figured NOBODY would like. (Yes, it wound up becoming the "stand-out" track -- that still surprises me!!!)
@ Rionat, it's also cool to read your comments about "Crucified." And you're right... I was recording the song for my lover. Wait... I take that back. It wasn't FOR my lover. It was BECAUSE OF my lover. He'd broken up with me for apparently no reason, and it was during a very rough time in my life. I wrote "Crucified" as a proverbial suicide note -- not something I'm actually PROUD to admit, but hey... It is what it is... (I'll save the actual details for the book, LOL!) But can you believe that song is nearly 15 years old now???
Alright, that's enough for now. LOL... Really, I just wanted to thank you guys for paying attention. Yes it's true, as an artist, I DO feel very underrated -- at times... But one thing's for certain. I'm VERY grateful to those of you who DO "get me." I'm happy that I'm able to express myself and relate to YOU through my music...
Much love and much respect,Aaron-Carl

It is a shame that he passed, but at least he was healthy and active all the way up to the very end. At least he didn't have to spend the last year of his life bedridden in a hospital with this hanging over his head. Still, it is hard to believe he is gone, I didn't see this coming.

true, he was active all the way to the end, and that is a blessing. but it's still really terrible news— only 37 years old.

Aaron-Carl was just an amazing person, you could see that through his music and his presence online. I followed his twitter for the past several months and he would often make my day with a hilarious or inspiring statement coming through when I needed to hear it. Even though I never met him, I felt like I knew him and that he was a part of my life and I miss him a lot! My mind keeps going back to him and how special he was. We definitely lost him too soon.
― saudade, Saturday, 2 October 2010 01:05 (2 years ago) Permalink
I have been thinking the same thing the last couple days. He didn't know me from Adam, but he has been a presence in my life for years through social media. He was really open about his life and you always knew what was going on. I hate to say I took him for granted, but I always assumed he would be around forever.
I think the real reason his death was a surprise is because his MO was always: external drama->being pissed about the drama->being completely over being pissed about the drama->having a positive thought and carrying on with his life...
This really surprised me because this just seemed like yet another hurdle he would move past.
It is also sad that he spent the last year trying to take care of himself and get back into shape. This wont make it into the obit, but he lost 65 pounds this year and was eating well and exercising regularly. After dealing with a negative body image for a long time, he was starting to feel good about his body.
I think the saddest thing, besides leaving a child behind, is the fact that he was starting to love himself more and more. It would have been great to see him five years from now with a career in full swing and more time to get himself together.
