Pop Grunge Pop

So I've been in a real mid 90's state-of-mind lately. I'm looking for the wave of popgrunge singles that came out around about the time of... Singles. And Reality Bites. Stuff like California by Wax, and Molly by Sponge, and to a lesser extent, Story of My Life by Social Distortion. One hit wonders of MTV's first New Rock era.

Please list them so I can remember.

Also cf. I'm The One by the Decendants.

Toadies, Our Lady Peace ("Superman's Dead")

Clarke B., Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

big ditto on gygax's picks - "everlong" especially; songs like that are what downloading was invented for.

J Blount, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dino Jr. - "Feel the Pain", Archers of Loaf - "Web In Front", that Smoking Popes song, Rancid - "Ruby Soho"

Kris, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's not forget "Believe" by Dig! haha

Manny Parsons, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I also believe there was a song by some band called Summercamp. I can't remember the name of the song.

Oh yeah, and don't forget Nada Surf's "Popular."

Manny Parsons, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus Christ, this is some of my least favorite music ever! You know how there are certain styles of music that you have an almost physical revulsion to?... this is one of 'em for me, with that goddamn Seven Mary Three song quite possibly being the nadir of it all. Remembering all these songs, it's no suprise that so many people my age turned to indie back then.

Clarke B., Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Offspring - Self-Esteem

jel --, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

brains, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

School of Fish - "Three Strange Days" - anyone else remember this song?

o. nate, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just heard it on the radio last weekend!

Kris, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dinosaur Jr's cover of "Just Like Heaven"
Transister, "Look Who's Perfect Now"
Bis, "Secret Vampires"
and (granted, it isn't indie, but I do associate the mid 90s with it) "Lucas with the Lid Off."

Lord Custos III, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Verve Pipe -- The Freshman

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait. "Three Strange Days" predates even Nirvana's Nevermind (I think). Should we really be giving them more credit than they get?

Um, no.

paul, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Take a Walk- Urge Overkill

Time Stand Still- Rush

lyra in seattle, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot Just Like Anyone...

JM, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait - let's not forget FUCKING SOUL ASYLUM. Technically they might not have been one-hit wonders ("Runaway Train", "Black Gold", "Without A Trace" and "Somebody To Shove" were all fair-sized hits -- at least in Minnesota), but they were virtual nobodies before Grave Dancer's Union and more or less tanked afterwards. At least I used to get a larf outta my classmates by perfectly imitating the vocal stylings of Dave Pirner. Not sure if I can still do it though.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr. Patrin, you've made me so very happy than I haven't heard "Runaway Train" in five years.

Michael Daddino, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Marcy Playground

dave q, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What! No ones mentioned such classic 90's bands as Cake, Babylon Zoo,and Stiltskin!? ps some others who may have had better luck and racked up a few hits: The Wallflowers, Bush, Blind Melon, Jeff Buckley, Grant Lee Buffalo, Garbage, The Lemonheads, Gin Blossoms, Throwing Muses, Ben Harper, The Cranberries actually the list could go on and on but I think Stiltskin and their track "inside" takes the MTV award for grunge pop one hit wonder.

kiwi, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what about that song that goes "I'm not sick but I'm not well" and "I wanna rage against machines" and some line about piercing your tongue...?!

slim vestant, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"I'm not sick..." Harvey Danger isn't it? That was a horrible song but I loved one of the rhymes - "I'm an am-pu/ -tee goddamn you"

dave q, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not all one-hit wonders but

The Gandharvas - "First Day Of Spring"/"Coffee Song"
13 Engines - "Smoke & Ashes"
Doughboys - "Shine"
Varga - "Freeze Don't Move"
The Killjoys - "Any Day Now"
PJ Harvey - "Sheela-Na-Gig"

sundar subramanian, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dada 'disneyland'

keith, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The bit from Mystery Science Theater 3000 where they show what it would be like if Mike were a Crash Test Dummy is one of the funniest things ever.

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let me second that one. His impression of Adam Duritz is equally brilliant.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sponge - Plowed, Moist - Push, the Empire Records soundtrack, Guided by Voices - Teenage FBI, Kevin Salem - Will, Everclear - Heroin Girl, Kerbdog - Mexican Wave... there's loads more but i'm hoping vainly that my memory (and the recesses of my record collection) will have blocked them out.

Wyndham Earl, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Little Bastard" by the Ass Ponys was briefly on the radio, as was "Love Spreads," the only Stone Roses song that mattered in the US.

adam, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sundar: wasn't 'any day now' by the watchmen? and for killjoys songs, i respectfully nominate 'today i hate everyone'

Dave M., Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, how did that dada song go again? i just remember them spelling the title "dizz knee land" or something like that so they wouldn't get sued.

dave k, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Killjoys did an "Any Day Now" too. It even appears on this compilation album. I've never even had slightly pleasant memories of a Watchmen song.

sundar subramanian, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Candlebox - 'Far behind'. Deadful song using my hindsight specs but I ADORED this when I was spotty and 14. You would've done too, unless you were listening to the Fall or some shit.

Ian, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

twenty-one years pass...

can't shake this mood lately, all kinds but in this moment especially girl fronted acts and not without pop entirely

Swen, Wednesday, 28 February 2024 20:02 (two years ago)

same, in general I am loving how gen z has kinda flattened alternative guitar rock into a more monolithic connected thing.. grungey riffs plays with Shoegaze guitar tones over trip hop beats and maybe a baggy reference or two

brimstead, Wednesday, 28 February 2024 22:00 (two years ago)

crazy that grunge needed to be emboldened in that way

ugh i'm getting into 8 Arms to Hold You by Veruca Salt and i never thought i would

Swen, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 17:23 (two years ago)

some of the grooves they find are really pretty amazing
