ok i only got turned onto this recently, via some mentions here and elsewhere, but this album is fucking great. and so they deserve a thread
their new thing with halo of flies is good too. i assume some of the minnesota ilxors can fill in the blanks on these dudes. but really this stuff gets close to a sort of rock ideal for me.
― hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:07 (3 years ago) Permalink
by rock ideal, i mean loud, fast, short, taut, sort of nutso. that kind of ideal. i'd like to see them play.

"your own militia" is in the running for song-of-the-year for me.

saw them play (w/goole iirc) this summer, before no age. pretty good from what i recall but honestly it was a bit of a junkshow
― crazy farting throwback jersey (gbx), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:14 (3 years ago) Permalink
i'm sure they're sloppier live than on the album. one thing about the record is how tight it is.
― hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:22 (3 years ago) Permalink
haha i just meant the general atmosphere was junkshowy, which why i can't totally recall the set: they weren't the focus of my attention
― crazy farting throwback jersey (gbx), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:23 (3 years ago) Permalink
well they'd seem to lend themselves to that.
― hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:28 (3 years ago) Permalink
here's a good live vid. the drummer kicks ass, which is not-so-secret part of why i dig it

btw they are just as tight live as on record, it is kind of amazing.

― pitiable ass (abanana), Monday, 30 November 2009 06:28 (3 years ago) Permalink
i was completely ready to just eyeroll them cuz of the name -- i expected either crappy deathmetal or some kind of "funny" rock music, but they're not any of that at all. it's nice to hear someone do the guitar-drums thing with a level of chops that really makes maximum use of the instruments. (i guess black keys have chops too, but they just don't interest me much.) the no age guys are ok on that front, but the gay witch abortioners are just really locked in.
― hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 November 2009 06:44 (3 years ago) Permalink
hmph. listening to their myspace tracks. it's clear that they do well what rock is supposed to do, which is rock their flabby little asses off. but aside from the brick-chewing stuntwork, i'm not sure what to make of it. half speed lightning bolt? don't mean to write them off, cuz they sound as though they could tear a room down live, and i'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for shows, but i find myself wanting a little bit more sweet with the sour.
maybe i'm just too old & unstoned for this kinda thing...
― a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Monday, 30 November 2009 07:12 (3 years ago) Permalink
and maybe i'm just not in the mood. shackleton & arthur russell are working much better for me tonite.

find myself wanting a little bit more sweet with the sour.
they have tunes, tho. they don't depend on them, exactly, but there's a good handful of them on the record. the last song's even kind of pretty. "half-speed lightning bolt" isn't a bad description really, they're more conventional-rock than lightning bolt in a lot of ways. but it's all short and punky. i think that's a big attraction for me. i have this thing for bands that can keep songs under 2 and a half minutes.

they're on a label so small my very hip record store couldn't get me a copy, so I'm not surprised they aren't on Spotify. They are, however, on MySpace with a handful of tracks.

would enjoy a Gay Witch Abortion/High On Fire collab tho
Didn't know they did a Halo Of Flies collaboration. What's the issue with it?
I'd love Matt Pike singing for these guys. Vocals are the weakest bit by such a huge margin I kind of wish they would just shut up.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 21 January 2010 19:45 (3 years ago) Permalink
yeah i do not like the vocals on the album, such a throwaway - its better live because you can kind of tell they dont really care that much about them either

i just did a fast sample spin (and dont get me wrong i dig both bands) and it just seemed needlessly sloppy and messy, which is not at all what appeals about GWA

Honestly, I don't think any of them gave it a listen. They just ripped on it while they were ripping on all this bands with Dragon, Black, Bear and the like in their names.
We should send them a email with a link to this thread and complain that they are a bunch of ninnies.
