ha my band opened for these dudes at the show chronicled here:
show dread
the shittiness of the show wasn't really their fault except that they didn't draw anyone (like literally no one). they're an ok band, mostly boring but they've got their moments
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 23:20 (3 years ago) Permalink
I have never heard of this. That is funny to know that n/a's thread was about them though. This reminds me of the first Shins record. It reminds me of a lot of stuff I guess. Not bad.
― St3ve Go1db3rg, Thursday, 26 November 2009 00:55 (3 years ago) Permalink
I just heard their album--don't know if I like it, but it's cool that the singer sometimes sounds like he wants to be in Toto. Also, one song sounded like a complete rip from Arcade Fire.
― President Keyes, Monday, 4 January 2010 17:33 (3 years ago) Permalink
Yeah, I just got this. I kind of dig it - a lot of the guitar lines remind me of the Cure.
I'm going to give it more of a listen this weekend. Will report back.
― Clerk all KNOWIN (B.L.A.M.), Friday, 22 January 2010 18:44 (3 years ago) Permalink
I really like this too, not that they sound a lot like Real Estate but some of the songs put me in the same sort of mindframe.

Really don't hear Weezer in these guys at all.
― you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 22 January 2010 18:50 (3 years ago) Permalink
good thing only the first song is Weezer-y and that's about it.
nothing to special here, but very catchy stuff. sometimes thats more than enough.

this is lame for the most part but i dig "slow jabroni"

Uninteresting.
― BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Sunday, 24 January 2010 19:50 (3 years ago) Permalink
i have this band to thank for reinserting the word (and the whole concept/ethos, really) of "jabroni" back into my consciousness. they used to be called "jabroni sandwich" which is just ... magical.
― uptown churl, Sunday, 24 January 2010 21:39 (3 years ago) Permalink
Like this, thanks. WPB is just the kind of bad place that should have a good band. Have listened to "Swim" and "Twin Peaks" and don't really get how people are not hearing Weezer here. But also, you know, the Kinks. Ok, maybe that was just "Twin Peaks."
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 24 January 2010 22:25 (3 years ago) Permalink
i listened to whatever their "big song" is, and it sure sounded like indie rock to me.
― kshighway (ksh), Sunday, 24 January 2010 22:43 (3 years ago) Permalink
Super boring and unmemorable, I thought.
― Mordy, Sunday, 24 January 2010 22:43 (3 years ago) Permalink
ksh not liking it for being indie rock is funny but he's right to an extent
― k3vin k., Sunday, 24 January 2010 22:56 (3 years ago) Permalink
man, i love indie rock! i'm listening to Vampire Weekend right now. but whatever Surfer Blood song I heard sounded like the sort of faceless, boring indie that people have every right to call bullshit on, and there's so much other good shit out there that I just don't feel like giving this band's music anymore listening time.

i expect i'm going to like this album a lot. pitchfork are v good at having their fingers in the right pies at just the right moment when it comes to simple indieish guitar pop. pains of being pure at heart was one of my favourite albums last year and it got an identical rating, and came out in the same week i think. also since when is "it sounds like the blue album" a knock on an album?
― samosa gibreel, Monday, 25 January 2010 02:44 (3 years ago) Permalink
Its simple guitar pop, pretty much. I don't feel like there are any higher aspirations here. This ain't album of the year material, but it sounds pretty good to me right now. I still don't hear Weezer in this though.
― you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 25 January 2010 02:51 (3 years ago) Permalink
Pains totally got an 8.4. Waaayyyyy better than Surfer's 8.2.

― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 25 January 2010 03:40 (3 years ago) Permalink
Looked up some songs on youtube and agree w the whole 'boring indie rock' thing. Don't hear Weezer....maybe I need to hear the actual record rather than these live takes. None of these songs go anywhere the near Blue Album tho.
― Adam Bruneau, Monday, 25 January 2010 04:10 (3 years ago) Permalink
The only song that really reminds of Weezer is "Floating Vibes" the oohhhh's and the vocal melody and the solo that apes the vocal line minus a slight change at the end. This album is ok. Like, it's just kind of there, and that's it.
― jennaversicolor, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 18:09 (3 years ago) Permalink
Why the hell would you evaluate an album based on YouTube live recordings?!
This is a great record. Def Weezer vibe, with various 2010 US guitar-indie signposts too, obv.

what bands do you consider "boring indie"?
― kshighway (ksh), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:05 (3 years ago) Permalink
i guess like, destroyer, mountain goats would fall into boring indie territory. i don't really have any specific bands in mind though, it's more that of all genres indie is operates really nicely when it's a bit dull. i've yet to listen to this surfer blood record though, i might even agree with you.
― samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:39 (3 years ago) Permalink
i don't think either of those bands are boring, but i really love both of them
― kshighway (ksh), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:41 (3 years ago) Permalink

― Back Like That (makeitpop), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:49 (3 years ago) Permalink
They have more personality than Vampire Weekend I'd say. Contra is not bad, but it's basically shopping mall music.

I think Surfer Blood reminds me more of the Tapes n Tapes of 2010, not as much musically, but they feel like a reincarnation otherwise...

the tapes n tapes record is good but it's just a plain indie rock record, to the core. that stuff isn't really built for the internet hype cycle. i don't think anyone is gonna care about the second surfer blood record, if anyone even cares about this one.

Similar circumstances brought them to this point, they seem to be a similar band with boring-cause-they're-obvious influences... right, plain indie rock.

Surfer Blood turns in a faithful but winning cover of "Gigantic":
http://stereogum.com/738192/watch-surfer-blood-cover-the-pixies/video/
Drummer from "The Girls at Dawn" pitches in on vocals. I don't agree with her pronunciation of the word "love," but I'm kind of a purist when it comes to this song.
Astro Coast still sounds great to me. There's apparently a new EP, has anyone heard it?

I don't know if anyone cares, but the EP (Tarot Classics) is superb -- I have a feeling these guys are just going to record great pop songs and tour tiny venues forever
