I didn't realize this label had so many releases. Any recommendations?

GOG!!!!

scott seward, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 00:28 (fourteen years ago) link

i've been raving about utech and the gog album for months on ilx. definitely my "it's all new to me" label of the year.

scott seward, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 00:29 (fourteen years ago) link

i notice going to the site now that he will be "closing" the label? site? until next year. but you can still order stuff.

aside from the GOG album: Vagusnerve's Lo Pan album is amazing. Aluk Todolo album, Finsternis, is also great.

but, really, ALL the stuff i've heard is of such high quality. such a great vibe/aesthetic/design/vision/etc.

scott seward, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 00:34 (fourteen years ago) link

A week or two ago he took the site down completely apart from a front page, which had a note that the label was closing for the time being due to unforeseen circumstances.

I'm very relieved to see that he's back up and running to some degreee at least.

Best wishes for Keith & Utech to get through whatever the current difficulties may be.

I was looking forward to the Shokyo Ontei series, primarly for the Urabe involvement, so would like to see that come together at some point.

Here's the label website for ease of access by the way: http://www.utechrecords.com/

Bought the Vagusnerve (which was my whole reason for starting thread), GOG and Blood Fountains records to start with. $14 when you consider that shipping and tax is included is a pretty good deal actually.

do you have good/powerful speakers at home? cuz most of this stuff sounds great loud. i mean, i think it actually benefits from being played loudly. or the listener benefits. one or the other. probably both.

scott seward, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah I do, but I don't listen to most of my music on them sadly. :(

We call them "meat hemorrhoids" (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Got 'em the mail yesterday. Vagusnerve and GOG are totally fantastic. Dude also threw in two other earlier releases (one by Guillaume Gargaud and one by Half Makeshift) which look great.

five new releases are really good. more experimental/improv/collaborations. more electroacoustic stuff. the ural umbo album is excellent. but, really, i like them all.

From Utech Records:

To date I haven't said anything publicly about Stephen Kasner out of respect
for his privacy. He has issued a statement and I wanted to share it.

"Stephen Kasner has recently been diagnosed with some serious medical
issues. Like many artists who lack the benefit of medical insurance, he
pushed the situation aside until it became unavoidable. Emergency care has
been initiated, but he is not out of the woods yet, and his continued care
is extremely necessary - hence this call for aid to friends, admirers of his
art, and comrades alike."

You can help by making a donation via PayPal to <kas✧✧✧@stephenkas✧✧✧.c✧✧>

I am offering three URSK box sets <http://www.utechrecords.com/URSK.html>;
for $115 each. All proceeds will go directly to Stephen. If you are

that deal is worth it just for Urania alone. man, what an album...

scott seward, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 19:02 (eleven years ago) link

Urania has given me for real out of body experiences. without any drugs or anything. it has totally put me in another place and i have forgotten where i was while it was playing. it's magical.

new three-disc live fushitsusha + peter brotzmann set is FANTASTIC. sounds so good. well worth the money. it's 30 bucks...

scott seward, Friday, 9 May 2014 16:36 (nine years ago) link

I still like this label, though, because of my own tastes, I preferred their earlier days when they were more jazz, less noise. Some of those early brown-packaged jazz CDs of ridiculously small runs (75, 125, etc) were so good. The Rempis Percussion Quartet's "Circular Logic" remains one of my favorite jazz albums ever (for some weird reason).

It's now available for free, though:

And, wow, yes, that Fushitsusha/Brotzmann sounds great from the sample.

So I flat out love this label and I am pretty sad to hear that the wife of the guy who runs it just died, leaving behind two young kids as well (a 12 yo son and 9 yo daughter). There is a 4 and a 1/2 hour benefit album linked below and a gofundme if anyone feels like supporting. :-\
