since i never heard control when it came out its my new favorite song. have i ever heard an amerikkkan rap album that was such a successul euro/u.s. cultural exchange? vince clarke-inspired eurorave synths living in perfect harmony with chicago juke? okay, not on the same song, but still...
wish i'd had this for the party i threw last week. i had to make due with old baltimore mixes and l'trimm.

Is this just "Dream Date" with a new title? I can't tell if the former was ever actually released.
― dabug, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 14:26 (fourteen years ago) link
Dream Date was never released. A lot of it remains for Ultraviolet, but she threw out a few things and added others (which of what things, I dunno). Happy it finally exists in a consumable form, though! YAY!

from wiki:
Ultraviolet is the debut album by Chicago femcee Kid Sister, to be released November 17, 2009. It was initially to be titled Dream Date but was changed during the recording process, along with the removal of three tracks and addition of five new ones.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 15:17 (fourteen years ago) link
but i'd actually like to hear the songs that were removed.

plus, and this is weird, in the press thingy i got they mention how great the song "down ass jawn" is and a track with "u.k. powerhouse" estelle called "first ladies" (an update of ladies first, duh) and neither of these songs is on the album i got! and they aren't on the track-listing.

Just saw this thread! And I'd already moved the album up to my #1 spot yesterday, after playing it the first two times! After playing it a couple more times in the car today, though, I figure it slips to around #7 or so -- a couple places above, say, Lady Sovereign or the New Boyz. It kinda slows down in the middle to my ears, mainly in the cuts with collaborations. And I miss "Family Reunion" with David Banner, which was my favorite song on the Dream Date advance I've had for a year. Pretty sure the track that samples Yazoo and the freestyley one that goes "54321" make this version better overall, though. (Is that a sample, by the way? If so, of what song? It's great.) (As somebody mentioned above, there are other track changes, too, which I haven't yet mapped out on paper.) Part of the reason it probably won't be my #1 is that Kid Sister sort of lacks vocal presence, I think, until the last few tracks. Even the Yazoo cut ("Big and Bad" or whatever it's called, don't have the CD in front of me) kinda suffers for that. This has way more fun beats than Sovereign, but I'd say Sov's CD communicates more of her personality. Still prefer this overall, though. And the more I listen to it, the more of Kid Sister's personality I might hear. At least I hope so.
― xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 19:49 (fourteen years ago) link
Still have to decide yet whether it's better than the Selena Gomez & the Scene album (which is more Go-Gos than J.J. Fadd) though. Right now, I'd say they're both excellent year-end top-ten candidates.
― xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 19:54 (fourteen years ago) link
i just put it on again. man, i kinda wish i had thee dream date version to do a comparison. plus, i do want to hear the songs that were cut. though i'm sure they are easy enough to find online.

By the way, Scott, I would actually vote for this album as my favorite of the year if the year ended today, even though it's a best-of album. Partly it would be a stand-in for there being no atual albums of "new" music worthy of being called Album of The Year otherwise; partly I feel like it qualifies since I never heard of him before this year. Also, I don't actually own a copy so I've just been listening to it all year on Rhapsody. Regardless, I love it and I'm pretty sure that you would, too:

Other albums that might finish higher than Kid Sister if I were to vote today (unless I wind up deciding that she's better than any of these): Collin Raye; Uz Jsme Doma (technially out in '08 or maybe even '07 in Czechoslovokia, big whoop); Jono El Grande; Lady Gaga (technically late '08 but this was her year); K'Naan; Death (also old music, but other people will vote for it so I might as well, too); Brad Paisley.
Long-shot possibilities: DJ Quik and Kurupt; Faust; Buraka Som Sistema; Mac McAnally; Liechtenstein; Dirty Little Rabbits; Miranda Lambert.

Actually, if I was really honest, my top ten favorite albums of the year would probably be all reissues, but I don't think I have the guts to do that yet. I dunno, maybe when I'm 60 or something.

quite some achievement to think of someone going by the name "kid sister" as someone's mother

disagree that "right hand hi" is at all sloppy, its constituent parts fit together really well imo
― lex pretend, Sunday, 15 November 2009 15:49 (fourteen years ago) link
I like both "Right Hand Hi" and "Pro Nails" fine, fwiw, but don't think either track rates as one of the best on the album. (Off hand, I'd probably take "Big n Bad," "Switch Board," "54321," "Get Fresh," "Control" and maybe "Life On TV" over either them, not to mention "Family Reunion" from Dream Date.) Totally don't comprehend Whiney's "Mom" complaint, either (and even if I did, Moms don't necessarily make bad music).
― xhuxk, Sunday, 15 November 2009 16:21 (fourteen years ago) link
Oops, actually (duh), Whiney's not the one who mentioned Moms. (He says: "When the cool kids invite you to their party and turn out to be as boring and talentless as you suspected.#1.5") Still don't agree.

Attention every electro bandwagon-jumping MC in the UK. Listen to this record and take notes on how to do it properly.
Kanye's verse is probably the worst thing here. The 'Love On A Real Train' sample probably the best. This is all just so much fun. Stupidly enjoyable in the most route one, unchallenging way possible.

kid sister is one of the few performers around who's this goofy but still endearing to me
Also her record company are really stupid for not giving this a massive push over here. It's the one kind of rap that Britishes are immediately predisposed to like.

lol @ whiney dissing kid sister upthread. dude you rep for kanye & jay-z.
it's a really really good look for kid sister to rap over high-bpm jacking club music like this anyway, the breathlessness of her flow and energy she brings to proceedings really works on it, far more than on hip-hop beats. it's like a workout.

Kinda predictable that Kid Sister works so much better over Ramadanan and Green Velvet than she does slowing things down for Gucci. Listened to Ultraviolet again the other day and it's still so much fun - Willow Smith could do worse than go down that path.
