Where is option for "I don't think *any* of these songs is 'song of the decade'?"

I mean, I'm not going to wade into some godawful clusterfuck pitchfork thread, but seriously. There's maybe 5 songs I like. But none of them are OMG SONG OF THE DECADE by any stretch.

hüzün (Masonic Boom), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:11 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean, there's nothing on that list that even leaps off and says "pick me! you like me best!"

hüzün (Masonic Boom), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:11 (fourteen years ago) link

"One More Time" - and it isn't even the best song on Discovery. Oh, and I would like to reiterate my belief that "Hey Ya!" is a good song but terminally overrated, thank you and good night!

King Boy on Parole (King Boy Pato), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:12 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, and if you think that a Pitchfork list isn't going to be anything less than a bunch of dorks trying to be hip and covering all bases with no stong opinions, then of course you're going to be disappointed.

King Boy on Parole (King Boy Pato), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Definitely makes the first half of the decade look A LOT stronger than the second half.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 August 2009 11:14 (fourteen years ago) link

(And "no strong opinions" in addition to those "no stong opinions".) (xp)

Where is option for "I don't think *any* of these songs is 'song of the decade'?"

As I said in the original post, "Vote for your favorite song here."

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:15 (fourteen years ago) link

And for the record, I don't think there's a definitive song of the decade anyway. It's all opinion. Thus, vote for your favorite.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:16 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's really hard to pick a "definitive song of the decade" in most cases, because there's lots of good music to hear in all of them.

Except the 1990s. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is usually the de facto answer because it was a decade full of bullshit.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 August 2009 11:18 (fourteen years ago) link

None of them is a favourite, even from the list. It's a general pile of "meh".

hüzün (Masonic Boom), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:20 (fourteen years ago) link

And "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the shittest of all that bullshit!! (xp)

King Boy on Parole (King Boy Pato), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:20 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd say it's about halfway towards being a definitive list, but the other half is very meh indeed. 'Crazy In Love'.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 21 August 2009 11:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Really? I could cast a vote for at least nine of these and then kick myself for not choosing one of the other eight.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 August 2009 11:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh can we store it a little? There's a lot to love on this list.

GYFO was great at the time, but now it sounds really dated to me.

yeah...we were talking about this on, um, some hip-hop thread i can't remember recently. not "dated" as such, but...at the time it felt like an automatic era-defining choice, now it seems more like...a one-off, and very much of its time. i go back to missy's first two albums a lot more than to 'get ur freak on'.

lex pretend, Friday, 21 August 2009 12:03 (fourteen years ago) link

But Era-Defining Singles sound dated by their very nature -- that's the whole point of being era-defining.

Is Crazy the only song on this list with strings on it? The lack of strings in the complete 500 seems pervasive.

Also, you know, go fuck yourself, to those unfamiliar with the majority of these songs. Curious minds, etc.

"Ignition (Remix)" without a doubt. However, if "Ghetto Musick" had been on here it would be tough. The only thing Outkast did that built on "B.O.B.", IMO.

some dude, Friday, 28 August 2009 21:46 (fourteen years ago) link

R. Kelly frustrates me a lot because I think he's a great singer but the vast majority of his songs are really too stupid for me to enjoy. The ones where I can get past that and just enjoy the performance are "Down Low", "Fiesta (Remix)", "Thoia Thong" and "Step In The Name Of Love"; the others are either too far down the "caveman sexuality" line ("Bump & Grind", "Your Body's Callin'", "You Remind Me of Something") or too sacchrinely aspirational ("I Believe I Can Fly", "City of Gotham", "World's Greatest") for me to connect with them.

I think if he was coming at this from any direction but smooth R&B balladeer/crooner, I could deal with him. As it stands, I get too distracted by how incredibly stupid and ignorant I find him; I also have further baggage tied into how he represents a particular type of unknowing buffoon that I think is incredibly damaging to the public image of black people but, you know, that's my issue (lol Aaron MacGruder disciple).

horribly jaded internet person who takes nothing too seriously (The Reverend), Friday, 28 August 2009 22:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah I can't explain "Thoia Thong" at all, I just dig that song.

"Ignition (Remix)" is just really tepid and boring to me in a manner that makes me overreact wildly. It really just pushes my "HATE THIS" button and there's no real rational reason for it; it might be something hidden in the frequency of the synth patch or the way the syncopation works, I really don't know. I just know it's almost flat-out anathema to me.

I have a set of penises leftover from some bach party somewhere (HI DERE), Friday, 28 August 2009 22:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I can see that. I tend to really hate popular songs based on kind of random musical/sonic aspects like the tempo or the drum sound more than something, I dunno, lyrical or thematic or ideological.

some dude, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I really hate Ying Yang Twins too, but the beat behind "The Whisper Song" pretty much panders to a huge chunk of what I look for in music. R. Kelly is hardly ever doing that type of pandering and I usually end up getting mad that I'm listening to a dude with a junior-high education who dodged going to jail for pissing on a minor and that people are holding him up as something to aspire to.

I have a set of penises leftover from some bach party somewhere (HI DERE), Friday, 28 August 2009 22:23 (fourteen years ago) link

his stupidity keeps me from liking alot of r kelly's work, but ignition i don't find stupid at all. lyrically ok it's not brilliant, but the delivery is definitely among his less moronic. it's graceful.

samosa gibreel, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:32 (fourteen years ago) link

you know what was robbed and should have been on this list, is Kanye's "Pinocchio Story"

this is not the most profound bit of music criticism I'll ever venture, but surely the saving grace of "Thoia Thoing" is that it has a bunch of fun oi-oi-oing sounds in it

I can't find the words to explain how my feelings about the following dovetail with what Dan was saying above, but umm it seems like a lot of appreciation of Kelly (especially outside the pop world) is based on his being slightly ridiculous or far-out or functioning almost as a boneheaded parody of himself (e.g. I think sometimes he's an r&b favorite of people who find r&b silly because he's such a caricature of precisely the silliest stuff) -- this gets in the way of my liking some of his stuff, though for some reason I don't mind his inspirational for-the-kids tunes, I seem to remember "Thoia Thoing" being low on R-Kelly-ism and high on a good beat and oingy noises, and part of why I'm cool with "Ignition" is that it seemed like this moment where he successfully implicated the entire world in his song instead of seeming ridiculous -- you know, like most people want to drink and have fun on weekends, so he seems pretty OTM and reasonable on that one.

nabisco, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:56 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess I shouldn't focus on ridiculousness cuz that's not a bad thing, but his particular ridiculousness is, as mentioned, pretty buffoonish and dumb sometimes

Yeah -- at his core I consider R. to be a brilliant and prolific at his craft, while also crude and not terribly booksmart in ways that come across in his music and public persona. That's not at all an uncommon combination of traits in popular music, but obviously race and some other factors unique to R. Kelly make who appreciates his music and why a really loaded topic.

some dude, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:06 (fourteen years ago) link

^^sort of the flip side of what you said above, some dude, about your own likes/dislikes having more to do with sonic characteristics. With a lot of popular music, rap in particular, there seems to be more of a judgement based at least partly on what a track represents, rather than purely how it sounds. I think there is something very gracious and universal about "ignition (remix)" that make it a great track, especially if you ignore all of the stuff surrounding his real-life persona.

Dan S, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I think "Ignition (Remix)" is massively charming in part because of its sense of levity; I can see why this very thing might annoy people who think "omg best song ever" affairs should be more of an unmistakable big event. Of course R Kelly does intensity too but it's mostly kinda scary when he does.

Tim F, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:25 (fourteen years ago) link

well just to be clear, I'm not saying I'm put off him because I think other people are liking him the wrong way, or something -- it's just that if you generally prefer your music not-too-cartoonish, and want your r&b to be sharp, and aren't super-inclined to marvel or gawk or be charmed by the (admittedly compelling) ridiculousness of him, it's just gonna seem a little dumb no matter what other people think. some of that stuff requires shrugging and giving in to the goofiness and dumbness. which can be fine. (not "ignition," though, I don't think.)

nabisco, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah. But he really has a lot of songs that have a minimum of funny grammar or crazy sex metaphors and are just good R&B.

some dude, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:30 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean, I didn't want to get too Lex-y on any of these threads about the PF list, but really it does annoy me greatly that R. Kelly has one token entry on this list when people like Jay-Z or the Neptunes, who I think he was either on par with or very close to in terms of making great radio hits this decade, got more like 10 entries.
