In June 2009, Carey's official website announced the sales of over 160 million copies of her albums, singles and videos worldwide.[1]

According to Nielsen SoundScan, Carey has sold 51,569,000 albums in the United States through the end of 2008, making her the third best selling artist of the SoundScan era.[2] The RIAA named her the third best-selling female recording artist in the U.S., with shipment of 62.5 million albums.[3] Mariah Carey also has 18 U.S. number 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and is now second to the Beatles for most No. 1's on this Billboard chart.[4]

Mimi will take this in a landslide, I suspect. Does anyone besides surmounter actually own every album?

Heric E. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 July 2009 12:01 (fourteen years ago) link

i was just discussing this last night - unbelievably i only own her greatest hits and the last two (plus an assortment of remixes and random tracks from over the years), and my mariah faves are equally spread over her various eras. i'm most interested in getting butterfly, i guess - her move towards hip-hop and r&b.

are charmbracelet and glitter really as bad as critical consensus says? i rarely trust critical consensus, especially on mariah. i thought her cover of 'didn't mean to turn you on' was amazing.

lex pretend, Monday, 20 July 2009 12:09 (fourteen years ago) link

daydream was kinda the bridge between butterfly and power ballad mariah, what with that (brill) mix of fantasy with puffy. never heard charmbracelet or glitter outside of the singles.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 20 July 2009 12:18 (fourteen years ago) link

i voted mimi though.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 20 July 2009 12:18 (fourteen years ago) link

are charmbracelet and glitter really as bad as critical consensus says?

No, at least not the latter, which is easily getting my vote.

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Monday, 20 July 2009 12:22 (fourteen years ago) link

glitter is a fantastic album, and sustains the power of "i didn't mean to turn you on" throughout. i will vote mimi, but i have a soft spot for rainbow, butterfly and perhaps most of all, music box. with the exception of hero, which is pocahontas-level corny, it's a perfect album.

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Monday, 20 July 2009 13:50 (fourteen years ago) link

lex, you would like butterfly. the slink of honey isn't lost on the rest of the tracks. it's fun to hear her morph.

i have a soft spot for her i cant live with you cover (apart from the ending).

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Mimi is my favorite but I'm gonna vote for Butterfly, because it's amazing and deserves a vote... also Emotions is very underrated (has one of my favorite Mariah songs "Make It Happen", plus some great balladry overall, and a cool retro feel)... Daydream is also vote worthy ("Underneath the Stars" !!)

the only ones I don't own are Charmbracelet and the Christmas Album

The Brainwasher, Monday, 20 July 2009 14:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Make it Happen is my bf's favorite.

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:24 (fourteen years ago) link

"Make It Happen" is good, yes. So is "Someday," off the debut.

Heric E. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:26 (fourteen years ago) link

it's just so funny how different the 2 eras of mariah are. my friend Laura always said "i like Emotions mariah, not new mariah" then she heard Shake It Off. nuf said.

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:33 (fourteen years ago) link

old mariah could sing better though.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:38 (fourteen years ago) link

old mariah had less stupid/silly lyrics too.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:38 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't think even fans of nu-mariah would dispute that

xp or that!

lex pretend, Monday, 20 July 2009 14:39 (fourteen years ago) link

but i mean a HUGE part of nu-mariah's appeal is her sense of humour and the fun she has with her lyrics, whether she's playing w/her beloved hip-hop slang or just being decadently verbose

lex pretend, Monday, 20 July 2009 14:40 (fourteen years ago) link

i tend to prefer post-mottola mariah, but yeah, all the hip hop slang bugs me. the occasional lack of lyrical editing too. i know thats hardly unique to her in R&B (and prob pointless complaining about it in 2009) but its not my favourite thing in the world.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:43 (fourteen years ago) link

mottola mariah had a better chest voice, but i love the breathy, layered hip hop vocals like no other. they're like a mixer's fantasy. no one does that like mariah.

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:51 (fourteen years ago) link

like honestly sometimes i can't believe how airy/scratchy/whatever her voice is on later records, and how good it sounds.

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Butterfly would've been my alternate choice. After that? Probably Rainbow. Never will get the fascination for Mimi.

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:56 (fourteen years ago) link

the cover of Rainbow makes me want to eat babies.

Heric E. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:57 (fourteen years ago) link

search: heartbreaker, BLISS, after tonight, x-girlfriend, against all odds (awesome cover), crybaby, did i do that. and of course, mariah's theme. all ace.

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Monday, 20 July 2009 15:04 (fourteen years ago) link

i pity the man who's never listened to Bliss.

tho speaking of covers, mariah's best cover is prolly "bringin on the heartbreak"

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Monday, 20 July 2009 15:04 (fourteen years ago) link

I didn't say there weren't any good songs on it lol

The Brainwasher, Monday, 20 July 2009 15:05 (fourteen years ago) link

and Mariah's best cover is "Without You"! DURR! Though "Bringin On Teh Heartbreak" is indeed awesome

The Brainwasher, Monday, 20 July 2009 15:05 (fourteen years ago) link

her worst cover is "the beautiful ones" >_< only bad song on Butterfly

her worst cover is "the beautiful ones"

old big voiced mariah could have killed that track ;) (i cant remember mariahs version though, apart from that it seemed quite tepid - she had the wrong producer for that)

there are rumors that she's covering "I Want To Know What Love Is" for Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel... lol what is with her and these cheesy 80s covers.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 20 July 2009 15:17 (fourteen years ago) link

she's also covering "The Message."

Heric E. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 July 2009 15:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Voting for Glitter cos it's so underrated/underappreciated. Butterfly is my favourite though and it contains the greatest song she ever recorded (Breakdown). And yes, i own every album.

Christyles, Monday, 20 July 2009 16:14 (fourteen years ago) link

"Music Box". After that she has gotten really horrible though.

Wish she released an album done in the gloriously 70s style of songs like “Bliss.” Isn’t that wordless shit she does throughout that song Debussy-level gorgeous?

for all the talk on the p4k poll thread about how The Emancipation of Mimi should have been in the top 20 , it couldn't even beat 2 of the other albums of the decade in a poll of ILM's Mariah Carey fans?

i haven't listened to it enough but from what i can tell, it's not too bad. just didn't have any smashes, and bombed.

Quite possibly, yes. Charmbracelet isn't one of her strongest albums (it might possibly be her weakest, vocally) but it certainly contains some of her best songwriting."Yours", "Clown", "Lullaby", "Subtle Invitation" and the Def Leppard cover make up the album's few highlights.

No, I've never heard a whole album. One time I almost bought 'Daydream' for like $4 but then I didn't. Wasn't it supposed to be godawful, or was that just the film?

This object perpetually attempts to sell itself on eBay. (Stevie D), Thursday, 11 March 2010 03:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i really don't think anyone's listened to it. the film is supposed to be awful.

the album is like... lush, bubbly, buzz-y club music from the 70s, with hooks and synths as tipsy as champagne

yeahhh (surm), Thursday, 11 March 2010 03:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Doesn't Eric H. like Glitter (the album)?? I've never listened to the whole thing but I enjoy "Didn't Mean to Turn You On" and "All My Life" well enough. I watched most of the movie on Youtube once, which seemed appropriate.

MC + C+C must be one of the most underrated (in the sense of just not being talked about) great collaborative partnerships in pop. I suppose they probably did less than two handfuls of songs together though.
