"Cygnus X-1" separates the believers from the dilletantes (sp?) quite nicely

Alt question - Rush vs. Butthole Surfers. Funny voices, incredible and underrated guitarists, and they reflect upon their out-of-the- loop homelands in ways they probably don't understand themselves. Plus if you notice "John E. Smokes" is the same song as "Xanadu", compare the chord changes if you don't believe me

is that where hildenbeutel and boutsen got the name for their eye-q records (eg superstring, orange theme), but then german trance dudes being into rush is a given i suppose. i bought one rush album ,that double with a dark blue/gold sleeve, it didn't sound much like butthole surfers though

Hah, Dave! As soon as I saw this question, "Cygnus X-1" was the first song that came to mind! SO CLASSIC.

The entirety of side three of EXIT STAGE LEFT, which is pretty much one continuous piece of music incorporating "Broon's Bane," "The Trees" and "Xanadu".

"Xanadu" to me is their apex

I think "Fly By Night" was the first Rush song I ever heard. I hold it solely responsible for turning me into a Rush-nerd in high school.

Another vote for "Cygnus X-1". Agreed re Lifeson as well.

Gareth, did you buy the double live album All the World's a Stage? I just found that. That version of "By-Tor & the Snow Dogs" slays the studio version.

They did about 6 really good albums; only "Moving Pictures" has every track great. My favourites are "Xanadu", "Spirit of Radio", "New World Man" and "Tom Sawyer".

A toughie, but I think I'll go with Witch Hunt. Made you actually long to hear the other "Part"s (a pity none lived up).

"A Farewell to Kings," the song, not the album-- their niftiest balancing of pop, rock, pomp, and prog.

Part II of 'Fear' - "The Enemy Within" - gets my vote, mostly because they made up a breakdance to it on Solid Gold. Fucking hilarious!

a question that appears on thee "analogue heaven" mail list is "how did they make the 'Tom Sawyer' sound" or words to that effect. Tom Sawyer is GRATE, as is just abt everything on "Moving Pictures", but i will have to go w/the popular vote, & pick "Xanadu" out. It just flows so nicely.

I'll go with "Xanadu", but leave it to Rush to write a song with an odd name, and not even be able to claim it's the best ever song with the title.

However, "La Villa Strangiato" only loses out due to me not being able to reconcile the sheer goofiness of the Bugs Bunny thing even after who knows how many years. Plus, why the hell was Geddy Lee screaming over that solo part on Exit Stage Left?

Mine is "Limelight."

But actually I just came in to ask: what is consensus opinion on the weird lite-reggae break in "Spirit of Radio"?
