Let's apply this fun little exercise to years: what's the ONE song you'd salvage from the Year of Our Punk and/or Krautdisco?

M Matos, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (10 years ago) Permalink

I'll go with Althea & Donna's "Uptown Top Ranking," with "God Save the Queen" close behind. And I really wish this had been around when I was putting together the Arbitrary Road Map....

Did "I Feel Love" come out in 1977? If so, I have my choice. If not...*thinks*..."Europe Endless."

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (10 years ago) Permalink

Oh dammit. One of the best years for music ever (just from going by the songs already mentioned -- but there's also "Gold Dust Woman", "Sonic Reducer", "Got To Give It Up (Part 1)", "Heroes", "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment", the entirety of Marquee Moon), and I have to pick ONE. OK, fine...

The Adverts, "Gary Gilmore's Eyes". Classic sick/scary humor and one of my favorite openings ever.

"I Feel Love" for me, too. Back then I probably would have picked "Oh Bondage, Up Yours".

good call nate, esp. as sterl and i between us proved BY SCIENCE that the 7" of GGE is the ONLY PUNK ROCK ARTEFECT THERE EVAH WAS OR WILL BE hurrah!!

Talking Heads - "Pulled UP"

Keiko, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (10 years ago) Permalink

The Rezillo's "I Can't Stand My Baby" (first 7" version with green sleeve).

Although GGEs is indeed proven to the only punk rock artifact, this is only in the Newtonian Physics stylee. And as Heinstein would no doubt be able to PROVE by EVEN MORE SCIENCE that ICSMB is the only actual artefact as well (without GGE's changing from being the only Punk Rock artefact).

thought I'd deliberately pick a tough year: punk, "I Feel Love" AND "Trans-Europe Express," not to mention Parliament's "Flashlight"....

Pretty Vacant

MICHELINE, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (10 years ago) Permalink

This would be tough if I didn't really, really, really like Talking Heads.

Keiko, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (10 years ago) Permalink

Either 'Roadrunner' (the organ-less version with the better ending which I think was released this year) by the Modern Lovers, or 'Telephone Line' by ELO (I can't recall this song ever being especially praised - but to me it sounds like space-age doo-wop, which is surely a fine thing - and it makes my hackles rise whenever I hear it.)

"Here He Comes"

Here he comes the boy who tried to vanish to the future or the past
is no longer here with his sad blue eyes
Here he comes he floated away and as he rose above reason
he rose above the clouds he was seven feet high
Here he comes the night is like a glove and he's floating like a dove
that catches the wind in the deep blue sky
Here he comes the boy who tried to vanish to another time
is no longer here with his sad blue eyes.

Here he comes here he comes
Here he comes the boy who tried to vanish to another place
sees us following him all one at a time
Here he comes and we're checking out each others supplies
and looking at the eyes of all the others standing in the line
Here he comes the night is like a glove and he's floating like a dove
with his deep blue eyes in the deep blue sky
Here he comes the boy who tried to vanish to the future or the past
is no longer alone among the dragonflies

Which reminds me that "By This River" would be a VERY GOOD pick.

Changes daily.

Today it's Theme from a Symphony by Ornette Coleman.

Yesterday it was Magic Fly by Space.

Tomorrow it'll probably be Shopping for Clothes by Snatch.

Humanity being what it is.

"Don't Give Up On Us," by David Soul ...

... seriously now, prob. Stevie Wonder's "I Wish." For sentimental reasons mostly, and damn Will Smith for stealing therefrom. But it's still a great song.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (10 years ago) Permalink

I'm happy to go with 'Shame' by Evelyn King. I just wish it hadn't come out the same year as 'I Feel Love.' And I just hope it didn't come out the same year as 'Good Times' (Chic) or 'We Are Family' or 'Lost in Music' (Sister Sledge).
