I'm torn between "We Die Young" and "Bleed the Freak", I think. But I haven't heard this in ages.

the 1st side of this album really is fantastic

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 27 April 2009 14:25 (fifteen years ago) link

I haven't heard the whole album in probably a dozen years, so I'll just go with my favorite when this came out - "Sea of Sorrows." Looking at the tracklist nothing in the second half rings a bell. Hmm.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 27 April 2009 14:34 (fifteen years ago) link

"It Ain't Like That" is pretty good actually.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 27 April 2009 14:40 (fifteen years ago) link

I had this on tape back in the day, and am guessing I just kept rewinding to hear the first four. I can sing all those in my head; the rest seem vaguely familiar, but only as a faint tickle, if that makes sense.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 27 April 2009 14:44 (fifteen years ago) link

sea of sorrow, definitely...for some odd reason i thought that was on Jar of Flies too...

art-ghetto superstar (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 27 April 2009 15:22 (fifteen years ago) link

all I remember is (duh) "man in the box," vaguely liking "sea of sorrow," and that, in general, I thought this album was really shitty. guess I should spin it again sometime.

original bgm, Monday, 27 April 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago) link

half of it is awesome. its better than the third album, which is very very patchy.

xpost i'm not a real big fan of Facelift either...my best friend used to bump it all the time when he was the one who owned a car...I remember thinking there were some embarrassingly cheesy stuff on there...

I didn't start liking "Sea of Sorrow" til last year when the local altrock station I was listening to a lot at work (back when I was picking trash at Dick DeVos's alma mater) played it once in a while...it has that part towards the chorus that seems like its lifting you up for some big cathartic pop moment, only just to kick you in the teeth with the chorus...you know what I mean?

my best friend used to bump it

I'm just cringing at the thought of how self-consciously you typed this.

not very

now I'm cringing too

Worst album cover ever

seen a lot lot lot lot worse

great debut album with plenty of highlights. the chorus and arpeggiated guitar solo of 'sunshine' gets me every time. 'love, hate, love' is a harrowing slow-burner with one of my very favourite false endings. 'man in the box' is deliriously sing-along catchy. 'real thing' rubs shoulders with lowlife gutter trash and is a tight and thrilling closer. and 'it ain't like that' features not one, but two guitar hooks that are instant classics. favourite of all though is the unstoppable opening track 'we die young', which has a similar immediacy to 'them bones' and announces the arrival of a band with hunger, crushing heaviness and songwriting smarts in check.

"man in the box" is gonna win this, y'all know that amirite?

All that you should require of music is that it gets you laid. (Eisbaer), Tuesday, 28 April 2009 07:09 (fifteen years ago) link

"Sea of Sorrow", definitely.

'It Ain't Like That' for me. Just love that sliding riff.

MacDara, Tuesday, 28 April 2009 12:17 (fifteen years ago) link

bleed the freak has cheesy lyrics but it's a great song.

reasonable turnout

thought we die young would do better

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 8 May 2009 15:25 (fifteen years ago) link

three years pass...

I haven't listened to this in for forever, but I agree with the results and the sentiment that the first four tracks are where it's at. Having a serious nostalgia moment with "Bleed the Freak" right now, though.

Ironically, I'd FORGOTTEN the part in "I Can't Remember" where he goes up to grab that high note a couple times in the middle of the song. Good work, Layne.

huh, mildly that almost 20 ilm people have this album. i got it after Dirt but never really got into it beyond the one classic single.

I read an article about them and bought it shortly after release before hearing a note. I bought Mother Love Bone's Apple the same day. I was going through a Seattle phase so was buying anything on Sub Pop or referenced in the same articles.

"mildly surprised," meant to say.

I probably got it around the same time as EZ, after I'd seen the "Man in the Box" video. Facelift is no better or worse than any of their other records. Always a few really good tracks and whoooooole lot of chaff.

Bout to go Jethro TULL on that ass (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 21 October 2012 00:37 (eleven years ago) link

Nah, not much chaff on Dirt.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Sunday, 21 October 2012 02:32 (eleven years ago) link

zero chaff on Dirt and Facelift. and probably only two tracks of chaff max on facelift.
