Ozark Mountain Daredevils

So, as the story goes, Todd Rundgren got bored of writing perfect pop compositions and then flew off into prog territory.

Meanwhile, Ozark Mountain Daredevils were keeping on, writing the best Todd-ish songs never written by Todd. Example: You Know Like I Know

I saw the Ozark Mountain Daredevils and The Grass Roots at the Family Arena in St Charles MO in like 2004, maybe. I missed the Byrds, they opened the show. I got in for free, though.

It was pretty fun. The only OMD (lol) song I recognized was "Jackie Blue."
I waited in line with my two companions to meet Rob Grill (of the Grass Roots) after the show. He said "oh wow, young guys" as we approached and my friend Gabe said that we were in a Grass Roots cover band (Astroturf).
Which was total BS, of course. I think Gabe got something signed. The Grass Roots were better when they played the Art in the Park festival in Columbia MO a few years later, if only because the set consisted of three songs (Live for Today, Midnight Confessions, and something else)

I used to get Ozark Mountain Daredevils mixed up with Atlanta Rhythm Section...musta been the whole Southern-Bands-With-Long-Names-Doing-The-Whole-Soft-Rock-Thing thing...

Yeah, I used to get Atlanta Rhythm Section confused with Climax Blues Band. I think there is a thread somewhere about those two that I started, along with some earlier discussion about the Brother Louie/Jackie Blue similarities.

I came on here all excited to say that I bought Men from Earth at a flea market today, and that "You Know Like I Know" sounded exactly like Something/Anything-era Todd Rundgren. And what do you know, there's the exact same comparison in the very first post.

ha, i heard jackie blue today for the first time in decades(?), and while i didn't think rundgren, i thought wow, pure california pop. it's too long, but surprisingly fun.

the question of whether uncovering a similarity between an Ozark Mountain Daredevils song and Todd Rundgren is really something to get excited about at age 49.

More evidence that these guys were good!

There are two or three other really good ones on the album with "If You Wanna Get to Heaven." Christgau bypassed them altogether in the '70s book.
