oh man so divided between "the golden age" and "the crushed velvet apocolypse". like so divided that im going to come back and vote after i listen to them both again.

timely! my wife has been re-listening to her enormous LPD collection lately, for the first time in like eight years.

i'm going with "from here you'll watch the world go by," probably because that was the first i heard. also like dots doing gtr-psych.

if I vote maria dimension, would that spoil anything? it's the only one I've heard but I really liked it

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 15 February 2009 16:58 (fifteen years ago) link

it's one of their best.

dunt renaissance (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 15 February 2009 17:39 (fifteen years ago) link

not a bad album I've heard by this band. one of my all-time fave musical combos

on some charter shit no doubt (Curt1s Stephens), Sunday, 15 February 2009 18:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Shit this is hard, but I'll go for The Maria Dimension. Still got a lot of catching up to do, I don't know half of their albums.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:16 (fifteen years ago) link

sentimental fave: Curse
most impressive range: Asylum
best distillation of their style: Any Day Now
Maria Dimension is also amazing...

actually my faves aren't here, it's all good but yer missing 10-12 albums: the entire Chemical Playschool series (2 full length tapes, two double CDs, one triple CD); the cassettes Basilisk, Apparition, Prayer For Aradia, Atomic Roses, and Kleine Krieg (all on CD or LP now); and the ALchemical Playschool CD (more recent).

Of those, I highly recommend any of the Chemical Playschool records, Volumes 3&4 are AMAZING.

No idea how I will end up voting.

sleeve, Sunday, 15 February 2009 20:10 (fifteen years ago) link

oh duh you mentioned the Chem Playschools, sorry.

This list does indeed represent their "proper" albums.

sleeve, Sunday, 15 February 2009 20:11 (fifteen years ago) link

OK I voted for Asylum.

sleeve, Sunday, 15 February 2009 20:12 (fifteen years ago) link

still can't decide, though i'm leaning toward crushed velvet apocalypse. i was a long time coming around to these dudes. the mystique intrigued me, but the first one i heard was malachai and that turned me off for awhile, since it was less organic than i was expecting. now i wish i had everything they've done, cassettes included

kamerad, Monday, 16 February 2009 16:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Asylum, but there are at least other 3 strong contenders.

Marco Damiani, Monday, 16 February 2009 17:08 (fifteen years ago) link

I voted The Golden Age though Crushed Velvet Apocalypse would be close behind. I was a huuuge fan of these guys, stopped caring, and it's time I went back and re-listened.

everything since around 1996 hasn't been as good as I wanted it to be (although with occasional flashes of brilliance on every release, of course). Still worth hearing, but not quite at the dizzying heights of the 80's and early 90's. Major exception: The Chemical Playschool 10/11/12 box set, which is really excellent.

that said, Your Children Placate You... is my favorite release of theirs in many years, and the new one is quite good as well.

sleeve, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 18:26 (fifteen years ago) link

amazes me there isn't more love on ILM.

also in that last post I meant the CP 11/12/13 box, CP10 is a single CD from maybe 1999-2000 which is also worth seeking out.

sleeve, Friday, 20 February 2009 21:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh there's love, I just wouldn't know which to pick!

"evolution" on the maria dimension sounds like "shine on you crazy diamond" outtakes

kamerad, Saturday, 11 April 2009 19:51 (fifteen years ago) link

disappointing turn out.
i can't really blame anyone; i didn't vote, mostly because i've only heard a tiny portion of this stuff.

ian, Saturday, 11 April 2009 20:07 (fifteen years ago) link

well maria dimension is really sweet

Ok, so I walked by a used bookstore here in town that had a sidewalk sale with a shitload of CDs for sale for 99 cents each. It was a really, really terrible selection. Bad enough that when I came across a bargain bin staple like Monster I was like, "hmm, that's decent". Anyway, what two gems do I find in the mess? Asylum and Dinosaur Jr jayloumurph.

Great record, if you haven't heard it before you are in for a treat.

sleeve, Friday, 27 July 2012 20:50 (eleven years ago) link

I haven't! These guys have been on my long list of artists to check out for awhile now, glad this will be my entry point.
