I think by virtue of having fewer songs, all of which being REALLY good, this could be the hardest of the Pixies polls for me.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 22:49 (fifteen years ago) link

caribou is the best pixies song

Owwww. Between Ed Is Dead and Holiday Song, but I think I'll have to go for the latter.

verhexen, Thursday, 5 February 2009 01:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Impossible. But the Seaweed cover of "Levitate Me" made my love for that song feel almost new again, so "Levitate Me" -- the way the words of this song just kind of inexorably roll over each other is unequalled in the Pixies songbook.

it's gotta be caribou in a landslide, no?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 February 2009 03:38 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm bouncing between "I've Been Tired" and "Levitate Me", but I'm not gonna vote just yet.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 February 2009 03:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Caribou just edges out Vamos here. Really like the sparse guitars on the latter, but I prefer the live versions elsewhere. 'This human form, where I was born, I now repent'. Caribou, I just love it.

I said, "Losing my penis to a whore with disease."
"Just kidding," I said. "Losing my life to a whore with disease."
She said, "Excuse me, please?"
I said, "Losing my life to a horrid disease."
I said, "Please."

How can I not vote for that.

Caribou.

I'm in agreement. "I've Been Tired" it is.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 14 February 2009 03:24 (fifteen years ago) link

When I was 14 I memorized the entire intro of Levitate Me, verbatim, and spent a good summer reciting it constantly (and still can). My other story about it is that once I was at a bar, and my friend casually (and entirely apropos to the situation) remarked "politics go so good with beer", either way, I only realized the reference 2 years later one day wile on the bus.

Oh Caribou wins this one

mehlt, Saturday, 14 February 2009 03:52 (fifteen years ago) link

this may sound crazy but this is the only record by the Pixies that i own and i kinda love it but have no desire to get anything else. anyway "I've Been Tired" by a mile.

some dude, Saturday, 14 February 2009 05:24 (fifteen years ago) link

You should at least pick up Doolittle. It's in my top 5 rock albums of...ever.

Whooops, replace "Levitate Me" with "I've Been Tired" up there.

and Doolittle is above and beyond all their other albums, if you ask me.

mehlt, Saturday, 14 February 2009 16:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm not gonna get into a whole thing about this but the Pixies have always been one of my least favorite bands in the alt-rock canon, this record just had a few songs that endeared them to me a little bit.

yeah, this album (ep?) is pretty good. But I've always found this band a little cutesy, lacking weight. Likethe Violent Femmes: love em when you're 17, sound silly afterwards. Holiday Song, btw.

We'll keep well bred,
We'll stay well fed,
We'll have our sons,
They will be all well hung.

They'll come and play,
Their friends will say,
Your daddy's rich,
Your mamma's a pretty thing.

I've been seeing this poll resurface for over a week & I still can't decide b/w the sequential extremes of: Caribou_____________________Levitate Me. It speaks to their awesome quality-control that these Pixies album polls are such a goddam headscrew.

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Sunday, 15 February 2009 04:10 (fifteen years ago) link

There. I picked Levitate Me.

StanM, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 17:10 (fifteen years ago) link

picked Ed Is Dead since it makes me nostalgic for Southern California and strand cruisers ...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 26 February 2009 00:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Liked 'I've Been Tired' when I was much younger, but Chris Morris did it all so much better with 'Motherbanger'. 'Holiday Song' is it.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 February 2009 05:23 (fifteen years ago) link

So tough because I love every single song, but Caribou it is. It's pretty much a perfect song.

Chris in Belfast, Friday, 27 February 2009 13:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I guess I'm kind of spoiled on Caribou because I used to play in a band that covered it, but I can't argue these results.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 27 February 2009 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I put off listening to this again too long, and then the poll was over, so I didn't vote. :(

The Pixies were such a shock when they came along. A total shock. I wasn't sure
what to make of them at first. A 4AD record with swear words in it? What? I was
looking for something to fit the mould of the 4AD records trademark sound,
and this definitely did not fit that mould. But after you got used to it, you
realized they were brilliant. Or at least I did. They were entirely unique.

"I could tell you a story that could make you cry I wanna be a singer like Lou Reed
I like Lou Reed..."

Take that Reed/Cale poll!

Still More Goth Than Your Cat's Asshole (Bimble), Sunday, 1 March 2009 11:19 (fifteen years ago) link

and yeah, I echo other posters here who have said Some Dude needs to get Doolittle PRONTO.

Goth As A Moth (Bimble), Saturday, 7 March 2009 09:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I saw them open for Throwing Muses back in the old days, you know. They were really damn good. In a tiny club in the middle of nowhere. Before anyone knew who they were. I WAS THERE.

Goth As A Moth (Bimble), Saturday, 7 March 2009 09:25 (fifteen years ago) link

This still doesn't load for me, so I can't even see the results (and wasn't able to vote in the poll, either)

But I just wanted to say ^^^^^^^^^^^ Bimble, my friends saw them on that TM/Pixies tour and they said it was AMAZERATING.

Only time I ever got to see them live was opening for U2, and I was way up in the rafters of an arena. Still a good time, tho.

xposts to Kate:

Yeah! Actually, it turned out to be only a small chapter in my Throwing Muses lifetime, that gig, because I ended up seeing TM more times than any other band (about 8 times I think, dunno). But I'm listening to this Come On Pilgrim record now and something in the sound is making me recall this gig I saw when Pixies had just started out, in this little club, hardly anyone there, you know? And the memories are making me feel really strange right now. Kindof...like it makes me shudder to suddenly remember traces of something I had totally forgotten.

Stop cross posting with me I was just going to say something about Nimrod's Son! Let me get a word in!

Goth As A Moth (Bimble), Saturday, 7 March 2009 09:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Sorry, you are drunked and I am full of tea.

Dances With Psychedelic Owls (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 March 2009 09:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh I know what it was, now! I was gonna say that Nimrod's Son shits all over the Violent Femmes. LOL

Goth As A Moth (Bimble), Saturday, 7 March 2009 09:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyway, I think "I've Been Tired" is the easy-way-out vote for this poll, and I don't really approve of that as a vote. I'm very glad that Holiday Song prevailed over that.

Goth As A Moth (Bimble), Saturday, 7 March 2009 09:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I bet a lot of people love it (I do), but not quite as much as the one they voted for.
