Everyone knows that action/adventure, action/comedy, sports-action films of the 80s are a goldmine for INSPIRATIONAL, thematic pop/rock songs with HUGE choruses. And if you could afford an original Loggins number or two, well your picture was getting the premium stamp. Here are the prime suspects - feature singles only.

Poll Results

OptionVotes
"I'm Alright" - from Caddyshack (1980) 8
"Highway to the Dangerzone - from Top Gun (1986) 5
"Footloose" - from Footloose (1984) 2

"Meet Me Halfway" - from Over the Top (1987) 1

Incidentally, I got the idea for this poll while watching Over the Top, a third-tier Stallone feature (top-shelf camp btw) about man/boy love & the professional arm-wrestling circuit. The most expensive thing about the production was most likely the token Loggins anthem "Meet Me Halfway," which was featured not only several times in its original state, but used as an orchestral leitmotif throughout the film, so you know they were milking that cash cow to the last drop.

Here are the YouTube clips:

"I'm Alright" - as featured at the beginning of Caddyshack:

As there was no official video for that one, here is the whole song synched to some YouTube bullshit:

Footloose

Highway

Halfway

"Nobody's Fool" - this is the Caddyshack II video, but it is shit quality, so..

I'm also including the alternate, "extreme beach sports" video for the same song.

I know I saw Caddyshack II upon its release, and I remember thinking it was godawful at age 11, so it really must be dire. Sadly, its association with the film probably afforded "Nobody's Fool" none of the nostalgic appreciation people have for these other tracks, which is really too bad b/c it might just be the best thing here.

Sorry to steal your thunder, cankles. Being that the accompanying films (or the musical themes inspired by them, rather) are such a huge component of this poll, I established the "feature singles only" qualifier so that productions with the budget for more than one Loggins original, such as the Bruckheimer-helmed Top Gun, did not have an unfair advantage.

Jeff T to thread, being that Over the Top is his own personal Road House.

oops, just realized I goofed on the title of "Danger Zone." I shall proceed to hang my head in shame.

"Footloose" all the way!

I fucking hate Footloose, it wasn't even the best song in the movie (cos everyone knows that was 'Let's Hear It For The Boy'). Dangerzone for me.

The closest Loggins got to successful "rock" was probably "Don't Fight It" with Steve Perry, and he let Perry do the heavy lifting.

Huh, I like classic rock but I had to google that and don't think I've ever heard it before! Would make a fine shitty '80s movie montage.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 15:45 (six years ago) link

Loggins described the song as 'an experiment in pushing my limits to include rock', from the liner notes of his 1997 compilation Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow.

Danger Zone was a very meaningful song to me when I was 7. Perfect for riding bikes. To this day, I've never even seen Top Gun - just the Danger Zone music video. Planes, sunglasses, flattops . Do you really need all the other stuff? No.
