Indeed, by now we can all probably admit that T.I. is third-tier at best, struggling to keep pace with Slim Thug and Keak da Sneak.

We already got a Graun thread.
15) “Go Hard Or Go Home,” E-40 feat. The Federation. Plucked from one of ‘06’s top albums and dropped onto an ’07 soundtrack to become a single in ’08 and make the case for the lesser-know DJ Wes as heir to Rick Rock’s hyphy throne, it was all we had in advance of the new 40 Water album which was due out in November and just…vanished.

Cut CopyThis is New Pop revivalism, essentially--the next logical step from the interminable postpunk revival, but drawing on New Pop's wetter side--OMD, China Crisis. Nice blurry/yearn-y sound. Will anyone care in a year?

So by my analogy mainstream rap is and has been for a little while now at its own equivalent to the hair metal era: beyond-parody videos, horrible shrill sonics. That sounds just about right from where my ears are sat, especially in re. the dominant mersh-rap sound of portentous digi-synth fanfares and lumbering beats, that brittle blare that seems pre-degraded to 128kbps mp3 or ring-tone level, as purveyed by your T.I.s and Young Jeezys.)
borderline jim derogatis here

I suppose the H&LA = Faze Action equation is based on the notion that H&LA are to early house what Faze Action were to disco (arty revivalist rather than straightforward revivalist - which would be, i dunno, the DJ T album maybe).
b/c obv they sound nothing alike.
Although the comment implies it's a put down it's almost more a compliment: Faze Action could claim to be, if not the first, then among the first people to properly revive that aspect of disco in a serious way. H&LA don't feel that "groundbreaking" (last word in scare quotes cos obv all this stuff is primarily revivalist), and more just a really nice combination and blending of different ideas (though I could basically live with just the the first four tracks, subbing the Club Mix of "Blind" for the original).
anyways if I recall sr really liked the first Faze Action album.
I'm relieved that he's trying to be cautious in his discussions of his own increasing conservatism w/r/t the structure of his tastes (not so much the specific choices but his move away from pan-genre hedonism, the "scenius" of yore etc.). Too many people who go through this shift spend their entire time basically saying "it's not me, it's music in (insert this year)!"
― Tim F, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 10:44 (fifteen years ago) link
i think what bothered me most about the rap thing tho was the 'its like hair metal in 2008!!' awful parallels more than just him not being into it. gold plated phooey gangsta rap, whatever that quote was.
― opinions4usic (deej), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 10:58 (fifteen years ago) link
Yeah any comparisons of anything to hair metal (unless done by people who were totally into hair metal) are just rong.
"Livin' A Lie" did make me think of "When I See You Smile" (great song!) for some reason.
