"Instant Hit"
I remember being blown away by the band's tight rhythms when I first heard this: "I thought they couldn't play!"

Jazzbo, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 19:30 (fifteen years ago) link

So this is out - is the second disc worth it? I'm kinda dubious about the value of rough mixes of this material.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:48 (fourteen years ago) link

I think I like the Peel sessions more than the album :/
FM is a great song!

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 21:05 (fourteen years ago) link

The Peel session are indeed great. There's another session they did for the second album, pity they didn't include it with the expanded reissue of "Return".

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 21:13 (fourteen years ago) link

a "second disc" has NEVER, EVER been more worth it in the entirety of bs coin-scraping reissues EVER, if it's making the Peel Sessions properly available again!!

I can't really state that strongly enough! Cut is ace, yes, but the Peel Sessions oh man, there's no shame at all in preferring them to the studio album, none at all.

fndgo, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 21:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, but this also sounds like those fabled 'demo tapes' that the "Y" album was 'supposed' to be...

Mark G, Thursday, 22 October 2009 07:03 (fourteen years ago) link

.. although no "Number One Enemy" ?

Mark G, Thursday, 22 October 2009 07:04 (fourteen years ago) link

didn't really read the above posts properly in my glee there...

didnt Return of the Giant Slits get reissued a couple years back as well...did Dennis Bovell produce that one too?

sorry, that was kinda stupid (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:34 (fourteen years ago) link

referring to this:

i always feltd. bovell flattened out and muffled their ideas somewhat on cut (compared to what he did with the pop group on "y", for example) — i like the very scratchy monochrome sound for a while, and then i drift away
by contrast, i've been playing "return of the gigantic" all weekend, which is amazing

(i've still got my giant cut wall poster though — the other jazz insects gave it to me as a birthday present!!) (we were produced by d.bovell also — WE PUT IT IN GIANT LETTERS ON THE SLEEVE as he was a million times more famous than us)

oh man I missed this, sounds awesome.

I think mark s was referring to an orig copy, but I'm not sure.

"Return Of The Giant Slits" got reissued a couple of years ago with a bonus disc of remixes. Amazon's got it for $11 used.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 21 January 2010 00:09 (fourteen years ago) link

Anyone seen Viv Albertine's new band Limerence? They are coming to my town in Feb.

I saw her play solo a couple of months ago, just her & guitar. Funny, bitter songs she wrote around her divorce mostly. No Slits songs. Seems v nice.

Just a brilliant, brilliant album. How can you pick a favourite song?

yugi ex, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 17:58 (twelve years ago) link

This album was like a bolt out of the blue when I first heard it *very* late in my musical education. The various remixes and demos that have come out on expanded editions don't tempt me, but the original studio LPs and the Peel sessions are just impeccable. They really make me see the world through different eyes when I listen.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 18:13 (twelve years ago) link

It certainly manages the trick of capturing a moment in time and yet sounding pretty timeless.

yugi ex, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

would have gone for grapevine cos its an extra on the CD copy i bought for a girlfriend, but i guess it had its own poll recently.
