No Torche No Harvey Milk, No Esoteric No... you get the picture. This magazine is a fucking joke.
Metallica at no1 just because they made a not quite so mediocre album like they have the past 15 years. If that was the best Metal can offer Metal would be fucked. Thankfully we know this isn't true.
Fuck Kerrang.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link

answer will always be the mars volta

Edward III, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link

"Goliath" on Mars Volta's album is a million times better than anything on the last weezer album.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

i have heard exactly 0 of these albums

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 15:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Why so little satanic extreme metal? I though that's what most metal fans listen to these days, at least as far as recent music goes.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 16:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Kerrang doesn't cover much metal anymore , Geir.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I'd lay money on the worst being that Slaves To Gravity album, actually - it baffles me as rto where they fit into whatever Kerrang is trying to come off as now, it was pure 9pm at the Dog & Parrot vibes all the way

It's weird how there was that Classic Rock EOY poll on the big polls thread and ppl were really down with it for sticking to its guns and then you look at this and there's loads of shit like Mogwai and Mars Volta and whatever John Reis happens to call his band... the assumed consensus on all of those was that they were made by bands who are in no way outdoing themselves at this point and then they turn up in here. I mean I can't pretend to get angry about it like Kerr but it just confuses me

i'm stabbin' my way to the top (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 16:24 (fifteen years ago) link

FWIW I meant "shit" in the non-insulting sense there but like I say I don't see many people hailing those as classics

i'm stabbin' my way to the top (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 16:25 (fifteen years ago) link

It really annoys me that terrific albums have come out this year by Torche, Harvey Milk, Earth, Esoteric to name 4 off the top of my head. Yet they produce that list. The Bronx album is ok but never a top 20 albu,. Not heard Gojira or Enslaved so I'll reserve judgement on that, but they seem token metal albums. Mettalica at no1 can just fuck off though. When the next album comes out that will be seen as better than this one. It just smacks of desperation to proclaim metallica are back. Noone wanted a fantastic Metallica album than me, but it didnt happen. It's getting props for not being St Anger. Load is better than it FFS. I bet the list was compiled 2 weeks after it came out. If it was done now that the album has proved to be a letdown on further listens (even jeff agrees with me) , I dont believe it would be no1. (then I look at the rest of the list and see no better albums).
Maybe that's what it is. "Lets put 19 shitty albums in there to make it look like Metallica really was album of the year!"

All the talk on the rolling metal thread has been of a golden year for metal. You wouldn't know it by Kerrangs list. Wish the Terrorizer list was out.

Nothing against Geir, but it's a sad day when he knows more about metal than Kerrang staff!

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyone want to run a metal albums of the year thing like the ILX albums/Tracks that Musically runs?

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link

I've emailed her asking how she runs hers. I think it might be worth doing.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 16:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I bet people on the metal thread'd be up for it, loads of people did lists sometime in autumn yeah? I never got round to it.

I know the Terrorizer list but I can't tell you what's on it. I assumed it'd be in the current issue in the shops actually, I thought they'd have enough time.

Srsly tho that list up there gets worse every time I look at it - it's not even me (or whoever) not liking the bands, it's more like almost ALL those records being 'like their other ones but not quite as good'

i'm stabbin' my way to the top (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 16:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I've not heard Johnny Truant or Amon Amarth or Meshuggah, they might well be career highlights. No-one seems to think the NIN or AC/DC or Enslaved or Weezer or Alkaline Trio or Slipknot or the Bronx or Metallica are. Cancer Bats and The Gaslight Anthem are basically new bands, Scars On Broadway are just filling in for System Of A Down right?, people seemed to be riding harder for Gojira and BMTH when they did their first albums... um, I think that's everyone covered?

i'm stabbin' my way to the top (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 16:59 (fifteen years ago) link

DJ Mencap is pretty straight on, although I do think there are those who think Enslaved is their best yet (I'm not one of them, but pretty sure even a few on this board might say so). The Alk Trio album is their best major label release yet, but fat from topping the early stuff.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 17:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Meshuggah album is good but def not a career highlight

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 17:13 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, I dunno about that...it's probably my favourite meshuggah album. it's just so tightly focused and lean, but a bit more varied than, say, nothing or DEI.

I'd argue for bedlam in goliath being TMV's second-best album, too.

there's a lot of stuff on this list that I haven't heard/don't care about. kind of surprised GnR didn't make it though (even though it was awful).

m the g, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 17:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, Kerrang are still Kerrang with Metallica on top of the list. But it seems their perception of what is metal or hard rock hasn't changed since the 80s. Which may provoke some metal fans.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 17:32 (fifteen years ago) link

How do you mean? If you're trying to say that if K! cover it, that means they're deeming it to be metal or hard rock... there is no way on earth that The Night Marchers album would have been reviewed by them in 1984

Not that I really care about this magazine, though, not being British. To be honest, I'm only familiar with it because of Kerr's rants and that part in "Get in the Ring" where Axl rags on them.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 19 December 2008 17:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Running? No. Contributing to? Yes.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 19 December 2008 17:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I still havent heard back from musically how she runs hers. I know most of the rolling metal posters would write blurbs to go with each album, but it's the actual compiling of it that concerns me as i dont have office on my comp any more. Im pretty sure musically uses excel.

I'd have a go if noone else wants to but im not sure id be able to do it.

Plus is there enough demand? there's no point if there's only gonna be 10-15 people voting.

How I hate The Mars Volta. I'm sure their ability to play instruments might be beyond my comprehension but if they can't use that to make a tune it's just pointless for me.

nice to see metallica and that 'death magnetic' fraud in number one spot, though i'm sure the slipknot and mars volta records are pretty horrid. seems to be a pretty dire list on the whole, with only the enslaved, meshuggah and amon amarth jumping out at me as truly worthy contenders for the year
