my fav is "screaming hand" for the keyboard outro - other TOP PICKS include "no time", "see saw" and "d.o.a."

Probably one of the first two songs. I really don't get into this stuff as much as Blood Visions.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Monday, 15 December 2008 22:48 (fifteen years ago) link

this stuff is way better than his gnarly shout punk stuff - when i saw him at p4k every song was under two mins and basically indecipherable aside from whatever sloppy riff he was doing and i thought it was genuinely terrible then again it was also 12 pm

The Deerhunter cover sucks

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 15 December 2008 22:51 (fifteen years ago) link

yea i haven't gotten past 20 seconds of that song

gov. blapojevich (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 December 2008 22:52 (fifteen years ago) link

i was supposed to interview him but he was sick and canceled and then his publicist scheduled another time but she didn't know that he was going to be on a plane so they canceled again and by then my deadline had passed so i never got to talk to him >_<

i bet his album next year is gonna be the ish

Screaming Hand. Killed me the first time through, I've played it a hundred times since, and I haven't gotten tired of it yet. You Mean Nothing to Me and Hiding Hole are up there too. Songwriting here is at the same level as the Blood Visions stuff, not tons better, but no worse. Main difference is in the recording/production. Blood Vision's "wall of tinfoil" aesthetic is kinda cool, but it wears my ears out fast.

making a case for these songs by comparing them to how the band played the 'blood visions' song live doesn't make much sense - they played everything at least 150% faster and yeah it was pretty garbled and messy. every song on blood visions is a straight up banger on record, really memorable jams. i can only recall 2 or 3 of these matador singles w/o pulling out the record

Screaming Hand. Love, love, love the gulpy vocal thing.

yeah i mean i've heard blood visions too - just saying in general that i think matador singles is more nuanced and best shows off his range of talents.

Always Wanting More

Manchego Bay (G00blar), Monday, 15 December 2008 23:21 (fifteen years ago) link

If you'd asked me a couple of months ago I'd've said that 'Singles 06-07' whips this CD's ass but I'm not at all sure now. I am basically a Reatard newjack though, I don't even have 'Blood Visions'. I'll get round to it. 'Screaming Hand' or 'Always Wanting More' over here, anyways

Yeah, Always Wanting More is another winner.

i think it's weird how he says "retarded" on the album, btw

trapped here is way out ahead, with screaming hand, see/saw, im watching you, you were sleeping, always wanting more, and ugly death in the next tier

i can't choose between the simple fun of screaming hand or the fucking amazing chorus of an ugly death. and hey, this album is great & so is blood visions! i don't really feel like there's any point arguing over which one is better, though. despite what some have called eclecticism and "mature songwriting" on matador singles, it basically sounds to me like slower songs with some keyboard. all of his output to date is imo equally formulaic and simple and catchy. it's hard for me to call his latest release a more mature effort. anyways that said i love both albums alot and yes yes am excited for his new lp!
