Portishead for me.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:21 (fifteen years ago) link

I can't remember if last year I saw the top list and then decided for the 1st time since I started buying NME not to buy it (I'm sure someone will come across a post by me from last year sying what I did) But I decided to keep the tradition up this year by buying it (and i didnt see the results on here 1st)

Mark G is it worth reading? I know you will have bought it!

Mark G, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Nice that LOTP got their recog.

MGMT numberone? Mmmmm......tssssss....

Voted VampWk.

Oh, and no TingTings?

Mark G, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Nice that LOTP got their recog

thought it would be top 5, surprised at how low they're placing generally

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:44 (fifteen years ago) link

dunno, after the first ten or so places, usually due to hypefactors (i.e. big tours, interview access, playing the game somewhat, photosessions), the quality of the charts seems fairly consistent the next 20 places.

Mark G, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:47 (fifteen years ago) link

don't give a shit about Foals but Glasvegas and Metronomy are fucking terrible and i thought i'd like the latter

I have found that I actually quite like Metronomy. But I was a Customers fan, so that's not surprising.

GOD DON'T MAKE ME PICK BETWEEN LOTP AND SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS. I can't decide. That isn't fair.

I might have to get one of my sock puppets to vote for one of each.

Did NME just ignore the Cut Copy album then? Seems a mystifying omission considering the stuff they generally went for this year.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 15:03 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost to Nick: Vampire Weekend, Elbow, Late Of The Pier, Portishead, Hercules and Love Affair, British Sea Power.

Bon Iver almost scrapes in there. Friendly Fires are rising fast.

I just don't get the ILM Cut Copy love at all, so the NME and I are in accord over that one. (Cut Copy, Santogold and Girl Talk are currently fighting it out for my "most bafflingly overrated" award.)

The 'why the fuck did they vote for that appalling shit?' factor is quite low in this list though, compared to 2006 or, worse, 2002.

Disclaimer - didn't see Kings of Leon in there, and haven't heard the Glasvegas album.

Voted for Frightened Rabbit, which is my #2 album this year after Alopecia by Why? Can't believe they and especially Cut Copy didn't make the NME list. Nothing should surprise though, really.

Chris in Belfast, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 15:20 (fifteen years ago) link

To be fair, LotP sound like that live as well...

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 15:25 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't avoid music vids on youtube so much as never, ever, ever watch them. I don't like music vids at the best of time and I certainly don't like them on youtube.

Bit of a slump round about #40 and I haven't heard most of the Norwegian ones but by Geir's standards that's not too bad a list!

Brother Belcher (Marcello Carlin), Friday, 12 December 2008 16:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I still love that Marit Larsen album, it would be in my list definitely. Also Geir likes Sebastien Tellier! Awesome.

I've just had a good chuckle at the write up for the Oasis album in this poll. By 'chuckle' I mean fighting the urge to kick something violently across the room.

DavidM, Saturday, 13 December 2008 11:46 (fifteen years ago) link

only heard three of these:

portishead an obvious and effortless winner; mogwai nipping at their heels but out of breath; fucked up limping along half a mile or so behind.

Ironic Erection (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 18 December 2008 13:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I was unaware these magazines were to releasing Best of Lists for 2008; I thought they would be focusing on 1988 or 1998 as usual.

Mojo don't give a damn about 1998 or 1988. Their focus is on 1968 and perhaps 1978. :)

As for Q, they write about current music. But maybe focusing on current music that may not sound radically different from what was around in 1998. Or 1988. Or 1978. Or 1968.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 18 December 2008 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

pretty sure the PS, Oasis and Verve votes were joke ballots

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Thursday, 18 December 2008 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link

How can you be sure? There were a few people (elvis t) repping for the verve album when it came out) and oasis probably got a geirvote

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 18 December 2008 14:09 (fifteen years ago) link

I played the Oasis album recently, and found it wasn't bad at all.

One of those "disappointing" on first hearing, decide it's crap, then hear it again and find it's not as bad as remembered.

Heck, I even *like* it!

thomp, Friday, 19 December 2008 01:50 (fifteen years ago) link

I wasn't aware that Spiritualized, Primal Scream, TV On The Radio, The fucking Verve, Vampire Weekend, etc. were gay icons.

The Verve got a whopping two votes, ready the torches and pitchforks! And you're surely the biggest Spz booster on ILX passim by a factor of ten.

Iconic Erection (sic), Friday, 19 December 2008 04:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Why on earth are you trying to make an argument about this? You're so far up my ass you can see what I had for dinner last night.
