Bamboo music yes, but sometimes a bit on the (cinema)muzak side.

off course, YMO = classic

Last year I found a copy of Sakamoto's "Thousand Knives of Riuchi Sakamoto" which I think is from the late 70s. And I its a classic. Mixture of poppy tunefulness, classical piano exercises. And general naive prog rock meets synth pop exuberance.

I also think Neo Geo and Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia have some gems among the kitsch. Download "Forrest of Feathers", "Zen Gun". "Fieldwork" with Thomas Dolby is a matter of taste (I can leave it alone.) whereas I love the Iggy Pop collaboration "Risky" but you might not.

Steel Cathedrals is hyperhypnotic.

Heartbeat is an interesting album all it's own.

I haven't been able to get through all of Discord yet.

Also, I really like the contribution to Red Hot and Rio.

'Love Is The Devil', his soundtrack album to the film of the same name about English painter Frances Bacon, is, I think, his greatest album. It is even, maybe, one of the very greatest soundtrack records ever made. It doesn't need the film, that's for sure. On the other hand, it was the foundation stone of the brilliance of that film.

Some Sakamoto favorites from recent years:

US (Ultimate Solo)
This is a two-disc from Japan which has a great selection of tunes. There are three more volumes in the series, collecting film scores, advertising work, and rareties.

/04
This just came out last year. Sakamoto reinterprets some of his most famous hits as piano pieces. One of my favorite Sakamoto records, just fantastic.

Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto - Insen & Vrioon
Two fantastic records that combine the sine wave glitchiness of Raster-Noton and Sakamoto's piano. I prefer Vrioon but they're both very similar.

Chasm
This is a 'pop' record, but it covers almost too much stylistic ground, losing focus along the way. The fact that it's not cohesive doesn't bother me, because the record proves that Sakamoto can succeed and nearly everything he turns his hand to.

Sakamoto & Fennesz - Sala Santa Cecilia
They both did a show a year or so ago in Rome. (The big treat was a version of Forbidden Colors!) This is an EP with one long noise track.

... can succeed *at*

Forgot to say that the Rome show will indeed come out someday; the EP is a teaser? A one-off?

but sometimes a bit on the (cinema)muzak side.

After playing out Sweet Revenge and Smoochy, leading to Riot in Lagos and Thousand Knives, leading to 1996 and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, I'm just now to the point of taking the film scores side of him seriously.

Does today's ilx stand by the suggestions above in this thread? Any to add?

Nobody here has ever mentioned Left Handed Dream, his 1982 LP with Robin Scott (aka M of "Pop Muzik" fame?) Well, I will, because it's good.

the soundtrack for Tony Takitani is one of my alltime favorites.

Summer Nerves!! Ridiculous vocoder jams. Has the version of "You're A Friend to Me" that Quiet Village jacked

Bangelo, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 19:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I always liked parts of Left Handed Dream ('Kachakuchanee' & 'The Garden of Poppies' are two of my favorite tracks of his, they could be on B-2 Unit) but I could never handle the Robin Scott tracks. Even though I like the stranger parts of the first two M albums, Scott's style on this is closer to the straightforward third M album which is just trying too hard.

Last year I downloaded Sakamoto's original mix of the album with the weirder instrumental versions of the songs Scott added lyrics to later, and this version is suddenly one of my favorite Sakamoto records.

His playing and production on some of ex-wife (and sometime YMO member) Akiko Yano's albums is superb. Search her 1990 Nonesuch (compiled by John Zorn!)

Man, I didn't know it began as rectal cancer. What with all the news of this new wonder drug for people suffering from that specifically, I guess it might be too late for RS, if he's in the later stages.
