Particularly next month. I will be in all those cities at some point in December but I am not familiar with any Canadian clubs.

This other message board made up of regional Canadian music boards may help (no Quebec City board, though):

one year passes...

Going to Ottawa for a day or two in a week.

Record Stores?
Other stuff? (not including parliament buildings, please, and I'm already going to the National Gallery, so...).

13-16 June 2011: Ottawa: shows, public gardens and parks, Montreal bagels in Ottawa

couple of web resources for shows: http://www.punkottawa.com/shows/index.shtml (not just punk, actually), and http://www.ottawaxpress.ca/

Supposedly Kettleman's does good bagels, but I've never tried them (don't live in Ottawa anymore).

parks: Gatineau hills are nice if you have a bike or a car. Lots of hiking trails. Bike trails along the Ottawa river are good, too.

Are you guys looking for places to see gigs or just nice places to sit down and have a drink?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 23 November 2014 13:25 (nine years ago) link

The Manx is still good, right?

sean gramophone, Sunday, 23 November 2014 15:02 (nine years ago) link

It's my favourite place to have a drink here but it's often crowded. As a result, to be honest, we usually end up going to James St. Pub, largely because it's very close to our apartment. Pressed is a nice cafe on Gladstone that serves booze, where there are often shows. (A lot of the more interesting gigs are happening in Chinatown/Little Italy these days.)

Black Tomato is a v nice restaurant with a p good beer selection, which also has an avant-garde CD store in the restaurant.

Wow, how did I not know about that? Is it awkward at all to walk in off the street just to buy CDs?

jmm, Sunday, 23 November 2014 20:07 (nine years ago) link

Nope, people do it all the time or at least they did back in the days when people bought CDs. It has been going ever since Shake Records closed in the late 90s, back when I lived in Ottawa the first time.

two weeks pass...

The Manx is still great!

The Lt. Pump across the street is great, too. Good atmosphere, it's huge, and it's now connected to a very cool art gallery called PDA.

El Camino on the same street is great, and has the best food in Ottawa. It's almost always crowded, though.

Brothers Bistro in the market has a crazy beer selection, good food, and it's never too busy.

As for shows, Pressed is a good. And so is Gabba Hey (the practice space/warehouse venue/record store at City Centre) which has been bringing in some insane bands these days!

And of course, House of Targ pinball arcade on Bank St. Not only do they bring in great bands, but it's also a good place for a drink, plus it's got amazing perogis.

You all need to go and say hi to Kathleen Edwards at her new cafe:

Really? I'll have to give this a try. (I'm in the Bridgehead on Elgin rn so will stop by on my way out.) Habesha is still our favourite restaurant here but I have some affection for Ceylonta as well.

Btw, IMOO seems to be making Raw Sugar Cafe their main spot instead of Umi. They hosted Phil Minton there last weekend and it was great. Sounded better than Umi.

How many ilxors are in Ottawa these days? I used to be the only one here.

i was only there for the wknd (and i was actually in gatineau) but i thought it was pretty nice. id never been before and wished i couldve actually seen some of the historic, tourist-y stuff. i think we ended up having a v late dinner at supply & demand and it was excellent
