22nd May 2002 - which makes him - 43? - and means it's ten years to the day (Saturday, was it?) since I last went to a Morrissey's Birthday Disco.

So - I thought you might all like to pay your respects.

It's this Morrissey's birthday on 14th June

Many happy returns to my older and unrelated namesake

Leigh, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

43 is almost as old as David Moore!

N., Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I paid my respects by playing a few songs off Vauxhall & I (Now My Heart Is Full and The More You Ignore Me...), but my hair was too short to make into a tribute quiff.

I can't believe the poor reaction to this thread.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe if he had a record deal...

Bryan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Apparently at last some record company is releasing his 'Irish Blood, English Sweat' monstrosity. I can't remember its name - I'd never heard of it.

There was something about a bloke from Uncut finding a new song whilst going through Mike Joyce's tapes

Anna, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Really? How could Mike Joyce be so dozy as to not notice before? Is this an April Fool?

N., Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

(I'd read that Nick and it did cross my mind)

I'd heard it mentioned and then found story in this week's NME. Simon Goddard of Uncut gained access to the tapes durning the course of researching an upcoming book. The song is a Morrissey/ Marr composition from 1982 called 'A Matter Of Opinion'. It was never played live and only exists on one rehersal tape and sounds (according to Goddard) similar to 'What Difference Does It Make.'

Anna, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Celebration central. Apparently he's due to appear on a bill with Jaguares and Dashboard Confessional later this year. Hm.

YAY! I pranced around wishing everyone a Merry Moz-mas! And everyone who rides in my car has to listen to Hatful of Hollow for a week.

Keiko, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

43 years old...isn't it time he started thinking about girls? Or boys? Or vegetables? Or _something_?

brian, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wow, 43. That's painful; I bet the pain is enough to make a shy bald buddhist reflect and plan a mass murder.

Sorry--couldn't resist.

"SALFORD LAD - MORRISSEY

Saturday 21 April 2007 21:00
It is almost twenty years since Morrissey, Britain’s most thoughtful and enduring lyricist and singer, launched his solo career. Ever since his emergence as front man with the Smiths in the 1980s his songs have been poured over, analysed and quoted. In this two part series for BBC Radio 2 Stuart Maconie tells the story of the Manchester lad who became a British icon. We hear from friends, fans, colleagues and fellow musicians including: Richard Boon, Mike Hinc, Jo Slee, Andrew Paresi, Willy Russell, Badly Drawn Boy, Zoe Williams, John Hegley, Preston, Stephen Street, Tony Visconti, Andy Rourke and Suggs."

I have tickets to the show on June 26th. It's been 10 years since I saw him last and I'm very very excited. Am a little bit jealous that you're going to a birthday show, Deeznuts! That should be great.

ENBB, Thursday, 19 April 2007 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Fucker's not coming to Atlanta but I am GOING to see him.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 19 April 2007 18:47 (seventeen years ago) link

still not his birthday but i've just listened to second part of this and:

>Internationally renowned Morrissey experts Zoe Williams, Preston and Tory Suggs.

preston was ok on this. his band's name is taken from Viva Hate so he's obviously a fan. Suggs was on talking about the gig (him supporting Madness) which spawned that NME cover and the accusations of racism.

missed the first half, which was probably more interesting.

He is the oldest, but I would guess he has a better diet, gets more physical activity, and can afford better health care than the rhythm section.
