amelia fletcher's new band, has anyone heard them? they have a new single out soon and an album in july. is it a continuation of the talulah/heavenly/marine research thing?

Haven't heard any but they'd want to be better than Marine Research - their album was one of the biggest letdowns after the "Queen B" single had promised so much..

I imagine it'll be pretty different to the previous Amelia bands considering that Peter Momtchiloff (?) isn't involved..

i rather like marine research, my only complaint would have been that the songs were sometimes too long. sure i miss the excitedness of heavenly and talulah gosh but amelia fletcher really can't do anything wrong. i remember standing next to her when i saw them play and i was getting all sweaty and nervous, like i was standing next to royalty or something, i suppose i am pretty lame.

Amelia has that effect. She's quite something.

I actually preferred Marine Research to Heavenly. I have a fantastic song which is probably called L.O.V.E. on tape from a radio session, that they didn't release, but is just fantastic!

This new incarnation is seriously lacking the spark, mostly because three rather important aspects of MR are missing: Lead Guitar work, Keyboard work and Backing vocals. Their performance on Saturday night was a very noisy and chugging fair - plodding even - like seeing Amelia w/ only a rhythm section. I bought that new CD thingy anyway, but haven't listened to it yet.

Big huge GIANT
meh!
to Tender Trap. Amelia has lost it. Shouldn't the pressures of her job mean she should be staying in doing paperwork or something? I wish...

Hey, it was a mini-meh up there. *dodges brickbats, retires*

I did actually hear the demo and the single, but they failed to make an impression on me (positive or negative). I suppose that's damning with faint praise. Somehow most of her post-Heavenly output has lacked the oomph that Heavenly had. (If a twee band can have oomph.) There was an icy blast of something *more* underneath all the icing sugar cuteness of Heavenly which neither Marine Research nor what I recall of Tender (I keep wanting to type Tiger) Trap had.

Then again, we're playing with them in two weeks, so I'll let you know what the live experience is like.

Is "That Girl" the Tender Trap single? It's pretty bland. That is when it isn't being annoying (whatever produces that rhythmic noise). However, I did like the Marine Research album quite a lot. It seemed to be trying for something different from Heavenly - more arranged and varied - and I thought it succeeded.

"Tender Trap" is itself a great song, especially as done by old blue eyes.

seven years pass...

It's been over 3 years since the wonderful "6 Billion People". I see from their myspace site that they've got some new songs, anyone know when an album is due?

three weeks pass...

don't know about an album but the new single 'fireworks' has been out for a couple of weeks now. can't say i think much of it tbh. they could really stand to work with a decent producer, it feels like there's a not half bad song in there struggling to get out of the dull as dishwater arrangement

I haven't heard the new single yet but will probably seek it out because I do love Amelia. I'm happy that she continues to write songs and record stuff.

With Tender Trap I feel like there is a lot of talent but maybe not enough creative sparks and energy to really make an effort to transcent their own legacy, their various imitators etc. They have nothing to prove, are unlikely to make a breakthrough at this point and from recent interviews it seems that they don't really have that motivation any more. With Heavenly, it almost seemed like their time had come and they really tried with the last two albums to make them as appealing as possible with hopes of finding a new audience. After that tactic failed it's been downhill all the way.

yeah. there have definitely been shining moments post-heavenly but they are getting fewer and further between. amelia still has a great voice, maybe she should do some solo records like that dance one that fierce put out

That one is the perfect example of when she was acting ultra-ambitious and trying to be commercial. I think she is embarrased by it now. The "Tender Trap" brand is not as recognised as her own name and should be binned. I would like to see her doing a very basic solo album and touring with a small but decent band performing stuff from all her phases. That would be perfect for me.

Tender Trap is no more. Amelia and Rob are now The Catenary Wires: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TcafMOv5K-U
