Great band, from Seattle -- first saw them here at Terrastock IV some years back, also have seen them at T5 and on their own in a club earlier this year. First album pretty good drone stuff, second album even better/louder, the Sub Pop releases (Semaphore EP and Airs Above Your Station) completely fantastic -- Spacemen 3/Loop fed through the Godspeed epic drama machine but unlike Godspeed 1) rocks at various speeds 2) is much better. No album as yet has truly been able to capture them live and in supremely cranked-up straight-down-the-middle rampage mood, though the Sub Pop stuff sure comes close. To elaborate: I liked the first Kinski record and dug the teaser EP for the new album. But then I saw them live (with Acid Mothers & Oneida, both of whom blew them away) and it dawned on me that they were a grunge band without any real hooks or energy or any sort of fun factor. And then I got the record and it put me to sleep.

A friend in Seattle told me they were awesome and he'd seen them five times; I downloaded the last album and it really didn't rock my world at all. In fact I found it pretty dull and uninspired. But I keep hearing good things about the live show so Ned is probably on target. They're playing w/ Bardo Pond in SF sometime in July I think, might check it out if I'm feeling sufficiently stoned and hazey.

Kinski uninspired? Hmm. I guess some folks draw inspiration from different sources is all. They've done nothing but get better and better with every album.

Somehow, i think that the folks in the band would be amused by this assesment. I certainly don't agree with it, but if you're expecting Mudhoney, you're gonna leave the show disappointed.

kinski's been on seattle bills for several years now. i've seen 'em three times. while a few of the songs build slowly and have inspired me to gush on one or two occasions, the band occasionally tends to drone on too long.

Errr... Matt, I wasn't attending a show expecting fucking Mudhoney. I know what they're trying to be, and "grunge w/out hooks or energy" is how I heard it. I've seen Kinski three or four times and those first shows I saw (which was around the time the first rec. came out or thereabouts) were much less serious than this last time I saw them. Rock != furrowed brows, folks, nor should it!

To say a Kinski show "lacks energy" must be a meta-statement, cuz.. well, that just is never true... UNLESS you happened to catch one the special just-us-being-ambient shows, which do happen occasionally.

Kinski are one of the bands that have a "flavor", and if you like the flavor, you're hooked.. if you don't, you shrug. And I can't say seeing Kinski "all the time" is essential, as they don't really vary the setlist and performance too much show to show.. but if you're outside Seattle, then catching them on the odd tour is always a good idea.

My only complaint about them live is that they seem too preoccupied making sure their transition to the next song is smooth (with inter song loops, pedal retweakings, etc.), and end up sacrificing any kind of stage charisma... They are capable of that! It's just you have to catch them when they do a drunken show at the odd dive in Seattle doing nothing but covers of GBV or whatever Flying Nun band they're immersed in that week. :)

Hi. I think kinski are a real nice band. For some reason, I like their albums more than their live shows...but I really love both. I guess I am just not that into live shows unless I have a nice place to sit and enjoy the music. Maybe I am too old.

Anyway, I would say that their new album, and the last album are pretty tied in my opinion. Both really great.

A little something for the Kinski lovers among us (some of this news is Seattle-specific, but not all of it) -- posted by Chris Martin (the Kinski one, obv) this morning:

Hey Everyone,

Kinski has 2 shows in one night this coming Saturday in Seattle. Yep, we inadvertently got double booked. But you could actually go to both if you wanted. And they're both really good shows.

(These will be Kinski's last shows in Seattle until at least February (most likely). We're getting ready for our next album.)

The early one is a Sub Pop showcase at Neumo's, sponsored, of course, by 107.7 "The End", and the later show at the Sunset Tavern features a record release for new psych monsters, Master Musicians of Bukkake, and, direct from Japan, Miminikoto. Miminikoto features Koji Shimura from High Rise, White Heaven and Mainliner fame as well as members of the Broomdusters and Che- SHIZU.

We highly recommend that you go to the Sunset show if you like the crazy, psych side of the spectrum. Or the End show, if you don't.

The times are below.

Also, we'll be in Portland at the Doug Fir Lounge on Nov 13th.

And we keep forgetting to mention that there is a compilation for the Million Tongues Festival we did in August that features an unreleased track with Kinski and Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers. It's an ambient, trip song and the compilation is cool. To get one or to get more info about it, you can write Steve Krakow at plasticcw@hotmail.com I think they're $10. (You can't get them from us, only from Steve.)

And the Ampbuzz radio show is kicking into high gear, every Monday night (Tuesday morning) from 1 to 3 am (PST), just when you're awake, on 91.3 fm KBCS, Seattle. On the web at www.kbcs.fm It's Chris playing stuff from his record collection.

We start recording our next record for Sub Pop this January and there are 4 compilations coming out in the next few months with unreleased tracks. We'll let you know about them as they happen.

It's more rock. But you already knew that.

Out of all the Kinski I've heard (which is only their previous LP), I like this the most. Lots of chugga chugga guitar and classic rock riffing.

Also coming this summer is the reissue of our first record SpaceLaunch for Frenchie. We've added our first demo tape with two never before released songs as well as demo versions of a couple things. And a never before released number from the SpaceLaunch sessions that we used to play live all the time. We're reissuing Be Gentle with the Warm Turtle which has been out of print for awhile now too. Both releases will be on our new Intellectual Drunks imprint (co-released with Strange Attractors Audio House). We should have these titles available on tour and they will be available in stores in the middle of August

Last time I saw Kinski, I also played baskettball with the drummer and guitarist/flute player. The guitarist/flute player is so funny!!!

And if you haven't heard SubArachnoid Space or Paik then check those two bands out too!.
You probably know Bardo Pond but I gotta mention them anyway.

Alpine Static kinda nails them for me, finally, as far as matching the live shows. I think this is the best starting point, then work yourself backwards from there (perhaps excepting the Acid Mothers Temple split, and that free-form release... then again, I'm not sure which stuff gabbneb heard.)

I bought 'Be gentle with the warm turtle' on a whim this week after the first track popped up on my Mogwai channel on www.pandora.com and it's without doubt my best (ok, only) purchase of the year so far. Quiet loud with PROPER LOUD. A bit meandering in places, lke they felt obliged to make all the songs longer than 5 minutes, but that's forgivable as there's enough good stuff in between.

I will spend more money on this band.

I did finally get Alpine Static. I could probably take it or leave it, but when it's on, the tension&release unsurprisingly does it for me, sometimes a lot. I hear a fair bit of Sonic Youth in there. You probably don't want to know how much Widespread Panic I hear though, right?

Though I missed that show, fiddlesticks. Would have been great (and the band sez Tool were real friendly dudes and the crowds by and large loved 'em!).

Anyway, new album Down Below It's Chaos is kinda their scuzz-biker movie tribute at points. (Thus a song called "Silent Biker Type.") And Chris sings a few times! Very Thurstony, which fits in with MTS's mention upthread of the last album having a Daydream Nation homage feeling at points.

I bought Alpine Static used this weekend...I saw these dudes open for Unwound once and thought it was pretty decent but never investigated...

but yeah anyway this is pretty ragin'! Chuggy! Hawkwind meets QOTSA minus vox? i dunno, something like that, but I likes it!

A CLEAR DAY AND NO MEMORIES is a new multimedia installation, created through the Jack Straw New Media Gallery Residency Program, comprised of multiple 16mm film projections and recordings on vinyl, focusing on the atmospheric and atrophied architecture around Fort Worden and Puget Sound. Taking inspiration from a Wallace Stevens poem of the same name, A CLEAR DAY AND NO MEMORIES presents the viewer with an ever-shifting sense of place - one that is never the same twice. Within the gallery, 16mm films constantly run on looping machines, implicitly guiding the viewer through various environs and monuments. The audio recordings act not as a synchronized soundtrack, but instead become a physical presence within the space redirecting the mood and gaze of the entire installation. By manipulating the complex relationship between film and sound in a way that disregards a traditional or linear narrative, the work contemplates the fluid and evocative nature of memory and place.

Recent interests include the personal and social implications of loss, oblivion, history, memory and the subsequent acts of remembrance/memorialization. His work has been exhibited internationally and he has been the recipient of various awards, grants, and residencies - most recently the British Council Grant for Individual Artists. He currently lectures at the University of Greenwich and for the Slade School of Fine Art.
Kinski are Lucy Atkinson, Chris Martin, Matthew Reid-Schwartz and Barrett Wilke. Their unique evocation of avant-rock is deconstructionist and heady, but also emotive and visceral. NME described Kinski as "like Sabbath in a washing machine during a power surge." They have toured throughout the U.S., Europe, and Japan, and have a lengthy discography, including 3 full length albums released on the seminal record label SubPop.
Hobbs and Kinski, along with Robin Held, Chief Deputy Director, Exhibitions and Collections, Frye Art Museum, will discuss this collaborative project and other aspects of their work via an evening of conversation. The event will take place at Jack Straw Productions and the public is cordially invited to attend.
On the occasion of this exhibition, Hobbs and Kinski have created a limited edition artwork in the form of a 12" gatefold album. The work is adorned with film stills from the installation, and contains two new sound pieces by Kinski and a limited edition silkscreen print by Hobbs.

Kinski Sign to Kill Rock Stars

Good news for people who love high-quality hard rock: Veteran Seattle quartet Kinski have signed to Kill Rock Stars. Their next album, tentatively titled Cosy Moments (it's a P.G. Wodehouse reference), will come out in March 2013, their first since 2007's Down Below It's Chaos.
