Disco as Psychoanalysis. Fucked up and lovely.
The girl. (the divine voice of Louise Lopez) Is watching her object of affection from a distance. she knows what he's doing, she knows his ego is far greater than anything one woman could ever control and she knows that there is nothing about him that she will ever own completely.
The man is her lover...a man to whom she is completely and utterly devoted.
He's an egotistical prick.
But she loves him.
The writer (unknown, male) enjoys the voyeurism of the situation and puts words into the woman's mouth.
When you’re lyin’ in her bedAnd you’re in her arms instead of mineAs you feel her tightening gripLike a genie I will slip in your heart
I won’t give up, won’t give up, won’t give upOh...I won’t give up, darlin’, in what you dreamLike the notes here in this songWe’ll go on and on and on and on with our love, yeah
And then you realise...the misogyny, not to mention masochism, hits you like a chip pan over the head.
Plus.
The tune is gorgeous.
It goes on and on and on.
The closest to the sublimity of Chic, that later disco ever got.
Sounded great on traveeling fairs as a child too.

The closest thing in pop to this is "The winner takes it all"
Benny to Agnetha; Sing this.
"but tell me does he kissLike I used to kiss you.

New Genre
misogynist Pop.
It might one day rival "Child Hell" as a genre in ASDA.

Erm, thanks, if you know for a fact it was written by an "unknown male", you've got a point. Still, thanks for your analysis.
I'm not much for the original Slave song, the lyrics don't compare, i'll try to check out the others. Would you could call this 80's "boogie"?
My problem is even though i love lot's of different era's and styles of disco, i find alot of the lyrics/sentiments a bit impersonal apart from stuff like Arthur Russell and August Darnell/Kid creole.

"Unknown" only because I don't know his name rebop.
Man puts words into woman's mouth is surely not such a new concept for you if you like music?
I have a feeling you must love Chic.

But how do you know it was a man, i wouldnt think the credits on the sleeve would say "written by: male".
Yes, i know it's not a new concept, but you can't just presume it.
I love Chic immensely, but it's the same with them, i find it hard to relate to the lyrics if you know what i mean.

I'm not sure who the writer is. because I don't know his name at this moment in time, but, take my word for it, it's a man.
Maybe you should write your own disco?
Or, failing that, listen to Chic, and melt, like everyone else.

lyrics kind of devastating. can't think of another song OTOH that takes on this particular subject.

Inside Out is really hitting the spot for me this morning, her voice carried such emotion. I thought I should post this obit. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/lillian-lopez-singer-with-hit-band-odyssey-8131179.html

Another song of theirs that's up there with Inside Out and If You're Looking For A Way Out is Hang Together, never much of a hit, but gorgeous.
