Spin off from the remix-threads...Matos said most remix albums were a waste of time -- What are some that weren't? Don't bother mentioning the shitty ones, we already know about all those.

I really, really like the Natacha Atlas The Remix Collection.

david holmes remix single which has arab strap and mogwai (mogwai using the drum track of "good morning, captain")
warp 10+3
datach.i - that green remix single thingy
tortoise vs. autechre
the sea and cake - two gentleman (IMO the only worthwhile release)

No Protection - Massive Attack vs. Mad Professor Kicking a Dead Pig - Mogwai remix album Primal Scream - that dub remix of the entire "Vanishing Point" album. I forget who did it (Adrian Sherwood...?)

hmmm, all these people are British... the only American remix thing I can think of that I really dug was the Blues Explosion remix ep (Wu- Tang, Calvin Johnson, even, dare I say it, that bald, vegetarian, techno guy...)

What do people think of Boredoms/DJ Krush album thingie? I can't decide if it's boring or utter genius because I always fall asleep before the part where I fantasize that it really gets going.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jazzanova: The Remixes 1997-2001. It's way better than their own album! Although I guess you're after an album with remixes from different people of a single artist/band. In which case I'll opt for 4Hero's Two Pages Reinterpretations.

That's the best of the three according to not just me but also Danielle Metzler of Slipped Discs in Athens, GA (remember that Onion article?): When she was ringing up the U.N.K.L.E. thing, I said, 'These are supposed to be really good.' So she says, 'Yeah, but if you're not going to get them all, the DJ Krush is really the one to go with.'

she totally wouldnt say that.

Echo dek.

And UNKLE is a major dud. No Protection is pretty good though.

Kruder & Dorfmeister - Sessions Lamb - Fear of Fours Bonus Remix CD Departures - Remixed by the Coastal Commission

I would also mention the BBC1 Essential Mixes, which have a devoted worldwide following. Some of them are amazing.

Martin, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

i found the mention of no protection in 'high fidelity' to be a bit odd, don't know why. what did they say? that it was the best lead-off cut evah??

Mum- Please Smile My Nose Bleed
NIN's Further Down the Spiral is good just for the Richard D. James tracks.
Bjork's Telegram isn't too bad.

Does anyone know if that Herbert remix compilation is any good?

The UNKLE remix EP The Time Has Come (which is really a remix collection of other peoples mixes) is really good (although the UNKLE remix is kind of eh). I like the first Funkstorung remix collection, all the Techno Animal projects are nifty, and the Kid Loco Jesus Life, etc has some nice tracks. The Bjork remix album is weird cause it doesn't contain the best remixes from Post (I have no idea who chose the tracks but they did a pretty lame job). But a great album could have been assembled from those mixes so that should count for something.

that Herbert thing is terrific

M Matos, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Um... The B52's Party Mix was the first successful one, I think.

briania, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The herbert thing is ace

i think that as a rule remaix albums that are a collection of one remixers remixes are better than remix albums where 10 people remix one artists work. its obvious i guess, because just likea cover versions album you,re only going to like some of the artists involved whereas with one remixer i supose you would buy it coz u liked the remixer

It's not an album, but http://www.arktikos.com/bjork/ is a sweet site for unofficial fan mixes of Bjork's stuff. GOOD SHIT WITHIN THERE!!!!

Nokk, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Negresses Vertes remix album with remixes by Gang Starr, Massive Attack, Norman Cook and Kwanzei Posse(?) was pretty damned good. Not that the original's weren't also pretty ace, but it was nice to have the Negresses vibe brought into the dance scene.

Salt Peter Remixed, by Ruby, in that Salt Peter = dud, but the remix album is very good. Yes to No Protection and Echo Dek. The Bjork collection brilliantly entitled The Best Mixes From The Album Debut is excellent.

Yes, I would like to add my enthusiasm about the new Herbert collection - I just got it as a graduation present, and it is flat- out ridiculously amazing.

I've been listening to Reich Remixed again, and I must say it truely is a terrific remix album. The remixes on are not just good on their own, but they also capture something of Reich's essence, in a refreshing way.

More terrific remix albums are...

No love for the late 80's spate of House remix albums by *massive* artists? Madonna's You Can Dance, Bobby Brown's Dance..Ya Know It, Paula Abdul's Shut Up And Dance,
Janet The Remixes etc? It appears not :(

I don't think this is much liked, but I've gotten some mileage out of Sparks 12" Mixes. (Literally, it's one of my roadtrip favorites.)

Pentamorous Metamorphosis - Global Communications remixes of Chapterhouse. Better than 76:14 by a wide margin.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 12 February 2015 05:05 (nine years ago) link

not generally a fan of this genre, but Primal Scream's Echo Dek is phenomenal, and strangely, the Pastels remix album is quite good.

Poliopolice, Thursday, 12 February 2015 05:39 (nine years ago) link

Lots of good ones imho. Yello - The New Mix in One Go; Echo Dek for sure; Remix Party by Tipsy - fkng awesome. The Human League Unlimited Orchestra is good but the Fascination! EP is better and it's more or less a remix album. The other Sparks one Plagiarism, but that just might be only me that likes it. The 12" of McCarthy's This Nelson Rockefeller has some great remixes of their early stuff on the b-side - maybe my favourite release by them. The Beatles Let it Be Naked saves a fairly half-assed album, as does the Yellow Submarine Songtrack for that matter whereas "Love" is just stupid. Erm...Cornelius has a couple of good ones, Pet Shop Boys, . Could probably go on.

Dud: Kraftwerk's The Mix. Evidence of a talent in decline.

everything, Thursday, 12 February 2015 06:58 (nine years ago) link

Plagiarism was Sparks rerecording their songs rather than straight up remixes though, right? I like much of that one.

I'll also stan for The Mix, but I know most Kraftwerk fans hate it.

Losing swag by the second (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 12 February 2015 15:05 (nine years ago) link

I'm realizing though that I don't own many remix albums, and most are probably very dated sounding, like Blondie and Sugarcubes.

Losing swag by the second (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 12 February 2015 15:27 (nine years ago) link

i still like 'wishful thinking' by propaganda.

and i probably listened to the gorillaz remix/dub album more than the original.

The remix album of the Manics' Journal for Plague Lovers has a weirdly high hit:miss ratio.

I desperately want the Underworld remix of Williams Last Words on vinyl but the freaking ltd edition vinyl of that comp is so expensive.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 12 February 2015 18:12 (nine years ago) link

That one should have been the album version. I prefer the Weatherall take on "Peeled Apples," as well.

Imagination - Night Dubbing

brimstead, Thursday, 12 February 2015 19:11 (nine years ago) link

three months pass...

recently picked up the joe claussell re-interpretation of redhead by machine (matt edwards/radioslave)

totally ignored upon its release - possibly due to the chaos of special limited editions - but its a brilliant revision.

a lot more bottom end funk in the mix - at times sounding like a lot laswell/axiom classic.
