ABBA were great, but this is not even a match. There was so much more to The Beatles, really.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

oh come on. the beatles.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

The poll says BEST POP BAND and this is poptimist ILM though..

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

The Beatles were a pop band. And the most perfectly great one at that.
The Beatle are considered a rock band only by those who confuse pop with "music that you can dance too".

Geir, by your definition all music is pop music

i am the small cat (HI DERE), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

I suppose if it gets in the charts and on radio it is pop music by some peoples definition.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

For me, The Smiths were the greatest pop group ever, between ABBA and the Beatles I'd say the Beatles for style breadth and for the number of other acts they influenced.

It's almost a draw really. I would say ABBA has been more popular on radio stations worldwide, people who lived all their lives on anglophone countries sometimes don't really get this, but like Geir said The Beatles perfected the very concept of pop music.

I would say ABBA has been more popular on radio stations worldwide, people who lived all their lives on anglophone countries sometimes don't really get this

The Beatles never recorded an album in Spanish. They didn't even have lots of Spanish songtitles. ABBA's flirtation with one of the most spoken languages of the world surely gave them a lot of fans in a part of the world where the English language has never really established itself as an important second language even.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 18 September 2008 09:47 (seventeen years ago)

Will there be even one vote cast for Abba?

True - but they did record a version of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in German. And don't forget "Michelle" for the Francophone world.

My loathing for Abba is well documented.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 18 September 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

Abba. I hate all that yakky-dakky Merseybeat early Beatles stuff more than I hate anything Abba ever did. Plus far less force-feeding and indoctrination of Abba in the world.

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 18 September 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 18 September 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe. I admit I've never actually heard an Abba album - but I've got both volumes of the Greatest Hits while the only Beatles album I've ever owned was the Yellow Submarine soundtrack

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 18 September 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

Funkadelic/Parliament are lightyears better than James Brown. But still lightyears away from The Beatles. And not as good as ABBA either. It is possible that I'd rank Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie ahead of ABBA though, and that's about it.

The Beatles will probably win this. The scary thing is, James Brown probably would have beaten The Beatles although ABBA are musically way superior to James Brown.

Lionel Richie?!

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 19 September 2008 04:56 (seventeen years ago)

This should be a battle against The Supremes, they had 12 #1 Billboard hits whereas ABBA only had 3. The Beatles up at 1 with 20.

BTW, perusing Geir's definition of 'pop' music George Strait is actually the best pop artist of all time with 54 #1's. This, of course as candidate for best pop artist not best pop band but just letting you know.

Moka, Friday, 19 September 2008 05:09 (seventeen years ago)

Ought to have been Beatles Vs. Elvis then, as Elvis is the runnerup and also the one with most UK #1s (ahead of Beatles)

state of the world today, Saturday, 20 September 2008 00:53 (seventeen years ago)

Dunno much about George Strait actually, but I am pretty sure he has more musical talent than anyone with the surname Beckham has ever had. He may be a bit behind in the image/icon bit though...

Depends how you define 'best pop band' really, doesn't it? If it's only in terms of popularity maybe Abba would win, some people here seem to think so. I'm skeptical. I can't think Abba would win under any other definition.

Even in terms of popularity, The Beatles are bigger than ABBA. At least in the Western world.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 08:30 (seventeen years ago)

yes, but are they bigger than Jesus?

I’ll leave the 'song' dissection to G*** and his 'disciples' (Ioannis), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 08:36 (seventeen years ago)

If you discount all the tracks off Abba's greatest hits, and the Beatles greatest hits, The Beatles win undeniably.

(I mean, I vote the Beatles anyway, but the closeness of the poll reflects the hits' popularity, yeah?)

Mark G, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 08:48 (seventeen years ago)

Now what is The Beatles greatest hits, really? I mean, most of their best songs aren't even contained on "1".

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 08:50 (seventeen years ago)

mamma mia at the closeness of the result

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 12:44 (seventeen years ago)

xpost possibly, but that was the comparitive one I meant:

Abba Gold, Beatles "1", lose those tracks and you have an awful bunch of awful abba stuff (and a few classics), and a heck of a lot of good Beatles stuff, with a handful of awful.

I didn't believe it, I only said people had hinted at it in this thread! Unless you're inferring there are other reasons Abba might win in which case I disagree. Abba are good, but The Beatles are canonical gods for a reason.

rjberry, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

Abba are in the pop canon though. And this is ILM. Not surprised Abba did so well.
