BBC 1Xtra Playlist, Issue Date: 22nd August 2008

The third of our UK radio playlist polls leads us to 1Xtra, the BBC's home of black music. Their daytime playlist gets issued every Friday, but for some reason their website reckons it was last updated on July 18. I'm assuming that's a mistake - I've been keeping an eye on it lately and it all seems pretty much up to date (even if Dance Wiv Me is still on there). Ideally, I'd have liked to have found YouTube/Myspace links for all these, but I'm at work right now so I can't get at them. If visitors to this thread could supply links, they'd be most welcome, cos there's a lot here that I don't know but which look rather tasty. In any case, same as before - vote for the one you like the best.

Anyhow - poll runs til this time next week, at which point we move on to Bob Harris Country next week. Suggestions for programmes to poll from then on would be more than welcome. I know Marcello's already suggested Westwood, but I think I'll hold off for three or four weeks on that, if only cos I'd imagine there'll be a large amount of overlap between this poll and that one; I think I'll be going for One Of Them Dance Shows or Late Junction for the poll after next, but further suggestions welcome.

lots of crossover w/ the us r&b/rap top 50 poll that we did. i would vote for jeezy again but since its the remix that def isn't happening. would vote for a milli but that would be boring so i voted for jazmine

I've been a bit zingy about Sarah Love on ILX before, but she's really growing on me as the "here's a shitload of hip-hop" DJ on 1Xtra. Still not as good as MistaJam used to be on M1X, or Rodney P and Skitz's "Original Fever", but still a fuck sight better than Semtex's one-armed ass.

^^^arguably the worst article ever written by a British music journalist

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 11:15 (4 years ago) Permalink

In 2002-3 I tried my hand as a promoter and actually wanted to bring hip-hop music to the indie kids in an indie world with an indie atmosphere," says Tego. "We had a venue ready to go in the West End, we had acts on standby, we had branding, we had concepts, we actually had partnership from the main hip-hop magazine in Britain and one of the key indie websites at the time, but at the last minute the gig was pulled because a government letter went out to local councils who forwarded them on to local venue managers telling them not to promote any hip-hop nights that summer.

woah wtf, was this because of So Solid thing?

blueski, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 11:39 (4 years ago) Permalink

That article is amazingly bad.

The writer seems to work on the assumption that Dizzee and Bizzle are the only black music that deserves to be played in UK. As long as those two get played on Radio 1 everything else can go to hell.

Tim F, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:17 (4 years ago) Permalink

i think this thread deserves better than to devolve into nitpicking over online journalism, and i pity anyone who has a comment about that rather than any of the songs

(am going to listen to a few that i've not heard before doing that myself, but am pretty sure 'fallin again' will get my vote.)

(jay-z remix of 'put on' ugh! haven't heard it yet but can't imagine it'll trump kanye's verse. plus i don't know why even bother playing one over the other: just got a v disheartening email from jeezy's UK PR informing me that there are no plans to release the recession on this godforsaken, miserable island :( )

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:21 (4 years ago) Permalink

I want to hear all of these before I vote. I trust 1xtra.

Nice to see N-Dubz are still going. Black Eyed Peas - sex + "a very special school assembly"

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:26 (4 years ago) Permalink

According to HMV The Recession is due out here on 8 Sept but it's easy enough to pick up on import (without paying HMV import prices) if you know where to go.

why does everyone like 'Bongo Jam'?

blueski, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:41 (4 years ago) Permalink

It's catchy and you can sing it whilst walking around work.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:43 (4 years ago) Permalink

'bongo jam' is the kind of song which is perfect both for dancing to after an all night rooftop party as the sun rises, and for giving you some ~positive vibes~ as you stroll to work. SOMETIMES I WAKE UP EARLY IN THE MORNING TO PLAY MY CON-CON-CONGO

i like 'do you mind' better though!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:50 (4 years ago) Permalink

agh, have just listened to that kano song. wtf has happened to his flow! is entirely possible that kano, dizz and wiley have the 3 worst tracks on this playlist :/

omg jay-z is tedious on the 'put on' remix. but nelly only adds to the already-awesome 'kiss kiss :D

hadn't heard the busy signal or patrice roberts tracks before: they are both really great

23 Deluxe the only bassline tune here i notice

Nas, Wookie, Wiley and Skepta are my favourites. PCDs remix and Teezy also worth my time. Lots of 'good but not great/not feeling it enough' for me inc. 'Comfortable' and the soca tunes (Machel Montano, Patrice Roberts), Flo-Rida, Lloyd and a few more.

That's my evening sorted then.

(One thing that doesn't seem to be mentioned in the 1Xtra = ghettoisation argument is the interests of the presumably sizeable 1Xtra audience with no interest in sitting through The Hoosiers and Alphabeat while waiting for a song they want to hear).

Matt DC, Thursday, 28 August 2008 08:19 (4 years ago) Permalink

(One thing that doesn't seem to be mentioned in the 1Xtra = ghettoisation argument is the interests of the presumably sizeable 1Xtra audience with no interest in sitting through The Hoosiers and Alphabeat while waiting for a song they want to hear).

there is an easy solution to that - don't play the fucking hoosiers or alphabeat at all. no one with ears has any interest in sitting through them.

God, I've really not listened to this station enough this year. Have gone through a few of these this morning, and my favourite of the bunch might well have been Top 40 sensations J Majik & Wickaman - really got me bouncing and chirpy. "Unknown Number" is also quite the monster; "Green Light" and "Pretty Please" are charming to a quite illegal level; I think I might need to listen to the Roll Deep and Wookie a bit more - both rather interesting; and Sway is still quite the mountain of charisma, albeit that this song isn't really saying anything other than that the feller starts the week on Sunday, which is always nice to see.

the tulisa track is horrendous.

aren't 1xtra sailing close to the wind in terms of fulfilling bbc trust's need for each station to provide a distinct service. that list looks quite radio 1, unless r1 is just going to revert fully to crap bands covering each other's tunes.

you have a point but in part it's because R1/the charts have moved closer to 1Xtra's output, which i'd argue is a good thing

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:32 (9 months ago) Permalink

I suppose it's because British pop culture in general has moved much closer to 1xtra than it was four years ago. On paper they look similar but the station is (just) distinctive enough when you listen to it. If we were in a peak period for indie there'd be a fair amount of overlap between the Radio 1 and 6music playlists as well.

(xpost - what Tracer said)

1xtra as breeding ground for r1 was a great move but this is just throwing the baby out with the bathwater

fucking "simulcasts", pure hack n slash costcutting masked as brand integration & streamlined unity of purpose

yeah i can't think 1Xtra feels too great now about being 1's "sister station"

― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 28 May 2012 17:06 (3 months ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

thing is 1xtra ought to be the sister station though, hauling it out of its ghetto and positioning the station like that was its great success of recent years - and besides, the landscape has changed and blurred enough so the two's remit has grown closer anyway. (you could even argue 1xtra has had a direct role in shaping that). but a sister should have a vibrant life of her own and not be hostage to the brother the way it looks like it'll be now.

i guess i wonder if the above justification (matt's and tracer's) would wash in the current bbc environment, r1/1xtra both seem to be the focus of a lot of negative internal attention, ime.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:47 (9 months ago) Permalink

Wouldn't wash at all is my guess.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:49 (9 months ago) Permalink

I'm assuming the BBC is still looking to cut even more and a less differentiated 1xtra is probably an easy target. Especially 1xtra doesn't have the air of worthiness or chattering class preservation society that ensured 6music's survival.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:53 (9 months ago) Permalink

like i say even within this period of kinship 1xtra could be doing more to be proactive, i think there is a hesitancy or laggardness about the transition from specialist track to mainstream daytime currently and 1xtra are waiting too long for the bona fide breakout hits (by which time radio 1 have usually got to first)

r1 do a good job for themselves these days, everything seems well integrated and might be even more so once grimshaw gets breakfast

http://www.choice-fm.co.uk/music/the-playlist/

otoh here's the choice playlist which is more classically "urban" and compared to 1xtra's it does just seem predictably dowdy and shit tbh

r|t|c, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:57 (9 months ago) Permalink

How much of 1xtra's airtime is devoted to general playlist? I only check the specialist shows.

painfully true.

xpost i don't love r1's music but it is a tight ship, they know their audience, their listening figures are better than ever, or were last time i checked at least.

Still find it a bit weird that people like Skrillex have no more natural home than on 1xtra, although I suppose yer Mistajams and whoever have been more active in repping that stuff than anyone.

more or less it's daytime til 7, mistajam weird bridge zone til 10 (target on fridays which is the best show on the station now fyi), then a four hour specialist mix show

until this recent change it used to be that you had a 2 hour specialist show followed by a 4 hour mix show through the night (so for instance cameo first then dj q) but the longer shows were completely useless for the most part

the format is right, the personnel and integration through daytime imo is not

r|t|c, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 12:11 (9 months ago) Permalink

if you take the skrillex / damien marley song for the outlier it is then you pretty much are left with just mistajam playing this stuff i think

as i've said before, jam's show is a baleful thing but you have to accept it's a marvellous example of public demand being whatever you say it is

possibly no one now posting on this thread is unaware of this but i started working for R1 and 1X in april; i find myself nodding along with most of what's being said and also pleased at hearing unvarnished criticism (which happens internally as well of course but usually in grumbling us-v-them pubchat terms)
