Today Eno & Byrne (electronically) released the first single off their soon-to-be-released album, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. Two questions:
a) Is it as good as the Wrong Way Up smash "Lay My Love"? -subquestion: Is it even possible for anything else to be that good?
b) Isn't it fucking great?

listening now -- kinda sweet! is eno singing backup? hope the rest of the record carries on with the poppy feel.

love this. so excited for new album.
― jaxon, Monday, 4 August 2008 21:39 (fifteen years ago) link
yes, quite a pleasant tune. it definitely has a similar feel to some of the tracks on eno's last album. sort of clunky and homemade - in a good way.
― nonightsweats, Monday, 4 August 2008 21:53 (fifteen years ago) link
yea it's good. But the grass background texture feels a little Battles anno 06
― sonderangerbot, Monday, 4 August 2008 21:59 (fifteen years ago) link
very very very good, this track.
― stephen, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 00:18 (fifteen years ago) link
lyrics on this are sick.
― r1o natsume, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 00:49 (fifteen years ago) link
I'm impressed with how good the song is. I kinda stopped checking for Eno after Paul Simon and Coldplay. Eno's production is a little too Pro Tooled for me, but thing song is so sweet it makes up for it.
― brightscreamer, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 00:55 (fifteen years ago) link
nice song, byrne sounds old though
― Zeno, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 11:29 (fifteen years ago) link
Good song.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 11:53 (fifteen years ago) link
nice song, byrne sounds old though sounds way better here than on that single with dizzee imo. great song indeed.
― willem, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 12:27 (fifteen years ago) link
Wait, so Eno isn't going to be on tour with DB at all then? (just read the text at the site)

no, i think original reports had Eno touring with Byrne, but that ain't the case. Eno don't tour!
― tylerw, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 18:52 (fifteen years ago) link
this is surprisingly good.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 18:57 (fifteen years ago) link
definitely good, but not as good as lay my love
― 69, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 19:13 (fifteen years ago) link
Agreed -- but w/o that record's bleak, post-Bush mid-life crisis.
Re. Cale, I also love how Eno works w/ these old avant-garde collaborators to make the purest pop records of his career.
― Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 23:46 (fifteen years ago) link
Just listened to this. Dig it, but it doesn't surprise me. Pretty much exactly what I'd imagine a 2008 David Byrne song would sound like. Production is cool, very sculptural and sensual, but also oddly "clunky", like someone said upthread. Sounds like NPR people getting stoned. Haven't heard any recent Eno, so I don't have a context for comparison in that sense. Does not incline me to buy a record.
― contenderizer, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 20:57 (fifteen years ago) link
From the Catbirdseat tumblr (it's funny cos it's true):
"Do this: listen to that Byrne/Eno song, but when Byrne starts singing, imagine it’s Herbert, the creepy old man from Family Guy."

― moley, Monday, 11 August 2008 03:50 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah, this is nice. lyrics are pretty corny tho!
― get bent, Monday, 11 August 2008 04:28 (fifteen years ago) link
V. nice. As much as I liked the leftfield, experimental My Life In The Bush of Ghosts, I want a straightforward pop record from Byrne/Eno, and this song makes me hopeful.
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 11 August 2008 08:02 (fifteen years ago) link
not bad but not very good either. the song totally passes me by. it's lukewarm. "nicht fisch, nicht fleisch" (not fish, not meat) as we say in german.
― alex in mainhattan, Monday, 11 August 2008 17:36 (fifteen years ago) link
Nice interview. Wouldn't have guessed Eno buys music from iTunes, though! Wowwwwwww
― stephen, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 00:30 (fifteen years ago) link
The rhythm section on this sounds like "Vitamin C". Some of the filtering and the synths sounds dated (to now). Guitar hook good. People at party liked it.
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 19:15 (fifteen years ago) link
Just came up during shuffle. Played it 15+ times now and I'm loving it more each time. Will look into that Vitamin C resemblance, interesting. I get so much joy out of listening to this song. The lyrics are Byrne commenting on Eno and him creating songs? That's what I'm reading into them anyway but I'm very sloppy wrt lyrics, I hardly ever really listen to them..
― willem, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link
Stream & multiple order/download options online. (waiting for email confirmation to their "I'm a new customer, create yet ANOTHER account I won't use ever again because I'm not going to remember yet another password only for your site" thingy so I can order)
― StanM, Monday, 18 August 2008 17:31 (fifteen years ago) link
It's surprisingly expensive for a direct-from-artist online download. I wouldn't be surprised if it was totally worth the money; just sayin'.
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 18 August 2008 17:34 (fifteen years ago) link
This sounds like the Flaming Lips

It's kinda sweet that the deluxe package includes a screensaver. So retro.

the only retro thing in here
― Zeno, Monday, 18 August 2008 17:46 (fifteen years ago) link
they send you the CD though and you can also select a lossless download for now, so I think that's pretty fair.

Yeah, I contacted them too - couldn't enter @ or . in the email address field ( email address looked like bill:gatesémicrosoft:com ) and haven't received confirmation either, can't order, want the deluxe edition.

Download worked fine for me first thing this morning, I'll try to post something interesting after I listen through another time..

Oh come on - still no confirmation, was able to click the "reset password" button and login to the "fan network" but I still can't order it.
Starting to reconsider whether I want the deluxe edition.

It worked! (After I finally set Internet Explorer as my default browser & reinstalled Flash. Download is ongoing and I'm -phew- back in Firefox now. *shiver*)

Seb Rochford plays drums on this record. It's... pleasant if slightly geriatric art pop.

I am hearing Flaming Lips too, Jon, and not in a good way.
(Only heard this on laptop speakers so take that with a pinch of salt.)

a dissapointing album. eno's songwriting is just plain dull nowadays and the arrangements are never very interesting. i do miss all the arty weirdness that made those early albums so great.
― nonightsweats, Thursday, 21 August 2008 00:04 (fifteen years ago) link
i got about three songs into this and had to turn it off. so dull. sorry. my expectations were very high.

I was disappointed and then on about the 6th spin it all just TOOK:
Review in Village Voice:

― Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 28 August 2008 00:06 (fifteen years ago) link
I'm about to hit that level, Pete. I read your review a couple of hours ago; I nodded a lot. This album doesn't rise to the level of Wrong Way Up as an album of grand, static art-pop -- the physical distance b/w the two creators cramps Byrne's lyrics and especially his singing -- but "The River" rivals WWU's "The River," and "One Fine Day" truly belongs.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 28 August 2008 00:22 (fifteen years ago) link
I wish I'd had the album when I took Highway 61 and other smaller byways to get to Madison because fricking 94 was flooded, what with that lyric about the river coming up over the freeway. I take "The River" to be about punk rock and rock and roll, where the song that seems to be about music, "Strange Overtones," feels like its about something else.
