Thread for anticipation of the forthcoming John Legend album

It doesn't have a title yet that I can see, but it does have this, which is fucking bananas, oranges, mangoes, guavas, and starfruit. Not what I expected at all. An electro banger with Andre 3000 and funk horns? Actually, Dre is probably better on this than JL, the former sounds like he's having an absolute blast. Anyway, this is in my top X and I'm pumped for the album.

SPECK KNUCKLES to Brainwasher for coming up with this.

Haha yeah, I was shocked when I heard this (in a good way), the album should be interesting

I like John Legend, but this song is annoying and I don't find it very unusual.

Turangalila, Thursday, 19 June 2008 08:46 (fifteen years ago) link

his vocals sound borderline trancey/autotuney. sounds better than i thought it would be overall. funny how inane lyrics like 'shake just a little more girl' sound better from JL than t-pain. this sounds like something will i am was involved with.

the chorus vocals i mean.

Is there a release date for the album yet?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 19 June 2008 10:56 (fifteen years ago) link

No that I can see.

I don't think there's any auto-tune, just mega-reverb, which can have a similar effect.

i like this song a lot now. amazing how a voice like legends can infer lyrics like that with more meaning than an akon or t-pain.

Album Preview: John Legend - ‘Evolver’

Don’t let the innocent face fool you. John Legend has been sneaky behind the scenes, perfecting his recipe for yet another chart-ripping R&B album. Still getting lifted off of his first two efforts? Get ready to take another hit because he’s in the studio this summer putting the finishing touches on his third joint, Evolver—due out October 28th—and it promises quality.

You’ve probably heard the first single “Green Light” on the radio by now, and probably turned it up when you caught a taste of André 3000’s verse. The all-star cameos on this new album, which also include Kanye West and Legend’s protégé Estelle, are no surprise and neither are the content of his ballads. However, the beats are fresh and will catch you off guard when it comes to versatility. This is definitely not going to be your average R&B album, but then again his name ain’t John Average.

Rap-Up.com got an exclusive sneak peek at a few tracks off of Evolver and wanted to share the juice with fans, so here it is:

1. “Green Light” featuring André 3000

Surprise, surprise—they picked the club banger as the first single. It’s catchy and flirty though, without going overboard (Who “makes love” in the club?). A confident Legend calls a female’s bluff when she plays coy on the dance floor.

2. “Everybody Knows”

On this mid-tempo number, something like an acoustic song on Red Bull, the crooner laments about a failed relationship. “I wish we gave it one more try,” he sings, with a sentiment similar to “Ordinary People.”

3. “It’s Over” featuring Kanye West

If you thought you tasted bitter when he sang about how he “used to love” her, then you better be ready with a spoon full of Splenda. The upbeat electro-infused track produced by Pharrell is about saying goodbye and good riddance, complete with obnoxious quips from Kanye, revving it up just enough to reach smug and still retain some humor. Kanye raps that the relationship is over “like Jay-Z and Def Jam.”

4. “This Time”

Super sweet, but not convincing in comparison to the rest of the more seemingly genuine tracks. It’s a syrupy ballad about how he wants to do the relationship right the second time around. He sings, “This time I want it all.”

5. “No Other Love” featuring Estelle

One of the strongest, yet most laid-back tracks thus far. Laced with a classic riddim, Legend and Estelle go back and forth, proclaiming their playful devotion to each other. “Wanna give you my love and affection, you got my attention,” he sways, borrowing some reggae swagger to induce an island love vibe.

Yeah I kind of agree with this.. I like him, but I'm never really in the mood for him.

Anyway, album cover:

Also apparently he has a duet with Brandy on the album, that should be cool.

My sister just had a baby, and before going to see her in the hospital, I was instructed to 'fill her ipod with breastfeeding music.... y'know, like John Legend'.

i've still got high hopes for this, love "Green Light" and his last album was really good.

I'm cool with him trying out a more modernistic production style, and that sounds like pretty much what I expected after "Green Light", but it's all moot because there are no songs whatsoever on this shit. I deleted it all except for the single.

Guys, this is actually really great:

Anyone else onto this yet? It's a covers album -- but given that the Roots have become the best cover band in music (as anyone who tunes into Kimmel from time to time knows), and Legend's voice is unfuckwithable, and they've chosen a really solid set of '60s/'70s soul, funk and proto-R&B classics, it's pretty hard not to enjoy this album on some level.

Yeah, I actually really like it, except for the track with Common. "Compared To What" and "I Can't Write Left Handed" have gotten the most spins from me.

I really think Evolver's unfairly hated on. Once Again was better but I think evolver's at least a 3-3.5 star affair

excerpt:

Bahraini rights activists expressed dismay on Friday that John Legend, the American singer known for his outspoken advocacy of civil rights and racial equality in the United States, plans to perform in Bahrain next week, despite the country’s brutal crackdown on dissent.

Faced with calls to cancel his appearance on Monday at Bahrain’s state-sponsored Spring of Culture festival, Mr. Legend said in a statement sent to The Independent in London that he was aware of “documented human rights abuses by the government of Bahrain,” but preferred to “engage with the people of the country” by visiting there.
