adam forkner? um ... have you checked out white rainbow? or valet? havent heard his stuff with honey owens ... unless that's the woman from valet? not very folky, the stuff of his i've heard, though

a couple of things...
have you heard grouper?
first two albums (way their crept + wide) were what i thought of the first time i heard valet a couple of years ago. way their crept is largely vocal smear + processed organ, wide brings in some more songlike elements (plus more guitar etc). she's really come into her own with her last couple of releases, cover the windows and the walls, and the new one, dragging a dead deer up a hill. much more songful, so mileage varies depending on how you feel about her tunesmithery; i think they're pretty spectacular.
dialing in's ketalysergicmetha mother (particularly) and cows in lye. very strange music. a feral fourth world philip jeck... without the turntables? you'll have to dl keta..., a long vanished cdr, but definitely check it.
and less contemporary, maybe less out of the ordinary but an all-time favourite: dadamah's this is not a dream (cd comp on kranky or the album on majora...) very good... early 90s new zealand psychedelia...

"blood is clean" is slaying me today

Not in any way "folk", but I am forever in love with Forkner for his record as [[[[vvrssnn]]]] (yes that is the worst band name ever)
Haven't heard Valet, I guess I should get on that. I tried to keep up with all his projects for a while but there were so many it got impossible. Dude's prolific.

There is a new Valet EP out on Mexican Summer with a Boris cover on it. Top notch!

Whatever happened to Valet, anyhow? She just kinda vanished at some point.

Yes you do. In the meantime, here's my interview with her and the rest of the band:

he was such a jerk to me when I tried to introduce myself after a show. this is awful, and I praise her for speaking up.

"Sunday" guitar tone is cut from the same cloth as Cocteau Twins' "Lazy Calm". Could listen to a whole record of that slow chiming empyrean beauty.

I picked up Nature when it came out, not having heard the previous albums, and I'm sure I must've listened to it 5-10 times without it making any sort of impression before filing it away and pretty much forgetting I had it. But I came across it last night while looking for something else and wow, what a beautiful album. Really looking forward to checking out the other two now. Only activity I can find online in the last four years was an Ambient Church/Kranky anniversary show last year -- anyone see that?
