This is harder than I thought it would be. It's between, unsurprisingly, the two big hits -- Rosanna and Africa -- and, surprisingly, some lesser hits, Hold The Line, 99, and I Won't Hold You Back. I think it's 99, tho.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 22 May 2008 20:47 (5 years ago) Permalink

Bah. Rambling. It's 99.

that song is haunting...it seems sad in a way

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 22 May 2008 20:57 (5 years ago) Permalink

Had to download "Rosanna" to remind myself how much I like it. I still like it. I voted "Rosanna."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 May 2008 21:01 (5 years ago) Permalink

I like how the Sisters of Mercy used that video set later, but just added water.

"Hey now
Hey now now
Sing this Rosanna to me."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 May 2008 21:04 (5 years ago) Permalink

They look unbelievably dorky in this video, but 99 is still the winner.

My God the 80s was a bad decade for hair.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 23 May 2008 03:22 (5 years ago) Permalink

As I am going to be shortly blessing the rains down in Africa, I have had to choose that very song.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 23 May 2008 10:22 (5 years ago) Permalink

Oh my heavens. I haven't heard "I Won't Hold You Back" in about 17 billion years. I'd forgot about that one.

Bimble, Friday, 23 May 2008 10:35 (5 years ago) Permalink

It's "Africa", really. "Rosanna" and "Georgy Porgy" are also gr8.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 23 May 2008 10:37 (5 years ago) Permalink

"Georgy Porgy"

Always loved "Africa."

novaheat, Saturday, 24 May 2008 09:48 (4 years ago) Permalink

The 80s was also a bad decade for glasses.

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 24 May 2008 16:17 (4 years ago) Permalink

Rosanna, because it has everything.

Rock - check
Soul - check
Pop - check
Funk - check, kind of
Jazz - almost

What else do you need in one song?

Matt #2, Saturday, 24 May 2008 17:25 (4 years ago) Permalink

"Hold The Line", easy. For a soft-rock song it's camp as tits. "I Won't Hold You Back" is no longer necessary thanks to Roger Sanchez, though I'd still say it's second.

edwardo, Sunday, 25 May 2008 04:31 (4 years ago) Permalink

"Africa" - good italo version by Key Of Dreams, good edit of same by Rune Lindbaek, and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fl6s2Q9BNO4";>MIMS vs Toto</a> is a guaranteed floorfiller. Saw the lead singer of Erase Errata belt it out at karaoke once, too.

"Hold The Line" & "Rosanna" also U&K.

etc, Monday, 26 May 2008 22:31 (4 years ago) Permalink

"Rosanna," but "Africa" is 1a.

Fitzcarraldo, Monday, 26 May 2008 22:39 (4 years ago) Permalink

Etc., that link you posted leads to a YouTube error message (malformed video ID). Can you (or someone else) re-post it? In a weak moment of nostalgia, I'd really like to hear reimagined versions of Toto's hits.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 27 May 2008 00:08 (4 years ago) Permalink

"africa" for the arrangement/production.

The top 3 here is really fair (could maybe switch "Hold the Line" and "Rosanna") - but "I'll Supply The Love" was robbed!

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 19:50 (4 years ago) Permalink

The top 3 here is really fair

The top 3 is actually a top 4. But "Georgy Porgy" deserves to be there too.

max, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 04:25 (2 years ago) Permalink

maybe it's the name and the lame album covers. and surely it's still cheesy to some ears.

Precisely. Jeff T and I made them happen again in karaoke the other night. (And yes it was "Africa.") So surely the rest must follow.

I do have a problem seeing Donkeyboy as particularly Toto-like, actually. They are more like 80s Fleetwood Mac with touches of Duran Duran and Jon Anderson on vocals.

I've been really really into "Rosanna" and "Waiting For Your Love" lately, what other songs and/or albums/collections should I check out based on my loving those songs?

dorkslovesudoku (some dude), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 14:46 (2 years ago) Permalink

well toto iv obviously. i think theres a two disc 'essentials' collection which is pretty good. their sound is pretty consistent, tbh, and from toto to toto iv you cant really go wrong. i dont know isolation or farenheit that well but they sound p good to my ears. my fave album is 'hydra'.

max, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 15:29 (2 years ago) Permalink

cool, thanks.

i watched Dune for the first time last week, was disappointed that i didn't notice any cool Toto pop jams.

dorkslovesudoku (some dude), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 15:36 (2 years ago) Permalink

apparently "Rosanna" was named after Rosanna Arquette? that's crazy.

dorkslovesudoku (some dude), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 15:37 (2 years ago) Permalink

I Won't Hold You Back didn't get any votes in that poll? At all? It's one of my favorite Toto singles and it was featured briefly in an American Dad episode. It's a perfectly cheesy 1980s power ballad.

Just breaking it in, feels comfy (MintIce), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 15:53 (2 years ago) Permalink

this band has layers. "stranger in town" video, starring future grima wormtongue actor guy, i think, disturbed the hell out of me as a kid

"stranger in town" video, starring future grima wormtongue actor guy

I always thought that was their weird way of referencing the Dune work -- that album and single came out around the same time as the movie did, Brad Dourif's in the film as well, etc.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 16:10 (2 years ago) Permalink

didn't know he was in dune too. guy is vying for science fantasy hall of fame induction
haven't seen the video in a looooong time. still gives me chills and bums me out he doesn't get away

"Smurfette's Smurfy Adventsmurf" (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 7 January 2011 06:40 (2 years ago) Permalink

that's such a horrible line. a totally failed metaphor and way too many syllables too. wtf

for a long time i used to sing "kilimanjaro rises like a lepress" without once thinking that this made no sense or even realizing that the word i was searching for was "leopardess." a quick google search has revealed that i'm not the only who had this problem.
