rusty_allen u shld def get the andy j & s-tee bbc set that rtc links just before the fold upthread, it's seriously mental

zvookster, Monday, 19 September 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

Joining the dots, LR Groove and Eastwood's shows on DejaVu have def been among my favorite radio sets so far this year. Can post up some links in a bit. Overall I'd have to say UKF radio hasn't been as good this year as last, which is a real shame.

Mr Andy M, Monday, 19 September 2011 19:53 (twelve years ago) link

xpost i just found out i have that one. must have forgot it after downloading. thx for the reminder.

andy, i tend to agree with you, but honestly i haven't been paying enough attention to state that fact.

Hannah Liston - The Middle (Dumplin Remix)
Champion - Sweet As You Like (Feat. Tasha)
Rebbeka France - Can't Wait (LR Groove Remix)

WHY DO THESE SONGS NOT EXIST YET

i asked for "HALF" a glass of wine, because i am TEMPERENT (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 10:40 (twelve years ago) link

i was just about to shout at hannah liston on twitter about this state of affairs but she hasn't even bothered tweeting for a year

why is it always the shit artists who are good at self-promo

in my recent funky torpor i was inexplicably drawn to listen to that rebekka france mix again (and again) this morning actually

something important and new about it, so alive and wild not just in vocal but totally matched in production

really feels like a road not taken :/

r|t|c, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 11:00 (twelve years ago) link

i guess what i'm meaning is there's something almost... junglist about it? as opposed to the simple leanness and meanness of when funky guys usually take their baby steps towards "tribal"

meanness of when funky guys usually take their baby steps towards "tribal"

Totally feeling you on this, 'meanness' is a great description (unfortunately) for most of these kind of tunes. It's weird and frustrating 'cause as a fan of jungle and of drum/percussion led stuff in general, it feels like tribal-funky is something I ought in theory to be totally into, but so many examples just leave me thinking 'eh that's ok' and no more. Bushman from LR Groove's last EP I thought was really cool, but that was as much to do with the synths as the drums. As I said above, I'm starting to enjoy some of Razzlerman's experiments in this direction, but overall it feels a bit like 'missed opportunity' at this stage.

WHY DO THESE SONGS NOT EXIST YET

This happens across dance music really - how many hardcore or jungle records never saw commercial release even in a much better age for record sales? European techno or house records can still take a year between appearing in DJ sets and online mixes and becoming commercially available. I suppose it's more noticeable here because the thread catches things so early, and because funky's commercial infrastructure is (still) so patchy and underdeveloped. It's hardly the artists' fault their records aren't seeing the light of day.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 12:32 (twelve years ago) link

At least nowawadays everything ends up on good quality mixes.

There are amazing grime tunes i still only have on homemade tapes.

Tim F, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 12:35 (twelve years ago) link

razzlerman and lr groove actually both nailed a great little sort of tribalism with the stuff they first came out imo with and then (seemingly) once they started to think about it and put name to vibe lost it completely

(talking about 'bushwacker' wrt razzler)

ye olde rhythmic danger discussion once again

r|t|c, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 12:47 (twelve years ago) link

as releases go it's more infuriating when artists don't release stuff which has already built up pressure rather than them not taking punts into the vague unknown. like idk maybe i'm jumping the gun in judging when pressure actually exists but am i really supposed to get gassed when champion gets round to releasing motherboard two years late?

r|t|c, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 12:57 (twelve years ago) link

think the fives just released or are about to release 'it's what you do' btw

r|t|c, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 13:06 (twelve years ago) link

to be fair "motherboard" got a (fairly poor quality) pressing in 2009.

Blast from the past...

They're giving away Get Low, it's been ages since I last heard this and it was everywhere.

jimitheexploder, Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:19 (twelve years ago) link

hadnt that ever come out properly? iirc it was one of the easier ones to get ahold of, even had radio and extended edits...

'crackish' (the instrumental) i've never seen around higher than 256k though if anyone should happen to have that

r|t|c, Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

we should have a nice big mp3 swap shop at some point now all of this is over

r|t|c, Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

talking of such things, this isn't the right thread but rtc was it you who once mentioned the existence of trina's "here you go" with the original teedra vox?

lex pretend, Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

it was, and i remembered you asking for it when it recently rescued most of my dormant hard drives. appears i've only got this radio rip though alas:

might tweet teedra next time she's online

What a difference 6 months makes - funny how after I spent the first few months worrying that Marcus Nasty was going all boring housey now I wonder if his sets lean too hard on the post-Redlight bassdriven drug noise business. When the basslines don't overwhelm the beats though this stuff can sound really good, kind of Caribbean-rave.

Tim F, Sunday, 9 October 2011 10:24 (twelve years ago) link

you wonder if...? hmm, i was sure enough to stop listening to marcus altogether a few months ago.

r|t|c, Sunday, 9 October 2011 12:09 (twelve years ago) link

ok i have put on 5th october. nice 2009 selection so far, can't wait til LOL SPECIAL GUESTS sunday roast & jook 10 spit in its wrinkled face.

r|t|c, Sunday, 9 October 2011 12:14 (twelve years ago) link

well yeah you could put it rather more strongly - I meant to say "I wonder if ...x... kinda ruins his sound."

at least she can say 320kpbs

What apart from "Clothes Off" and "Sexy Sexy" is really good? I have zero hard drive space at the moment.

Tim F, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 12:17 (twelve years ago) link

in my recent funky torpor i was inexplicably drawn to listen to that rebekka france mix again (and again) this morning actually

^^ where can i listen to this?

(i saw it on the tracklist for that pioneer/fuzzy logik/etc show, but can't recall it, tbh)

rusty_allen, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 13:28 (twelve years ago) link

nevermind, it's on the andy j & s-tee 1xtra mix. yeah, it's great.

rusty_allen, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 13:39 (twelve years ago) link

What apart from "Clothes Off" and "Sexy Sexy" is really good? I have zero hard drive space at the moment.

^^ nothing really stands out, imo. 3 of the tracks are dubstep-y with ravey synths ('closer' is akin to 'katy on a mission', for example). and the last 2 tracks are somewhat forgettable piano driven ballads.

Rather in two minds about MC Versatile on this one:

Tim F, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 10:02 (twelve years ago) link

I'm having difficulty believing MC Versatile could be anything other than a joy to listen to on anything.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 10:22 (twelve years ago) link

Sometimes to amuse myself I just read him tweeting about Eastenders and imagine it in his high pitched whoop.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 10:23 (twelve years ago) link

If you don't focus on what he's saying he's still a joy to listen to here.

i forget, did the old funkystepz remix of that ever crop up for download? much the better.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 12:58 (twelve years ago) link

I think it could be bought as an individual track due to being on the Supa Dupa comp?

Tim F, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

"forgettable"? for one thing "trophy girl" doesn't actually have any piano in it, it's more in the promise/devotion vein (and it's great, too). the whole ep is worthwhile imo

Beneath showcase mix: http://blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com/2011/10/beneath.html

Don't think this will be for everyone, esp those that aren't into Youngsta and 04/5 dubstep but to me presents an interesting complimentary strand to other parts of uk funky.

Thought it was worth a thread bump for this one, should be up the streets of a few people here. Mellow Bee ft Jada Pearl and Fatz - Under The Covers:
