Second Edition by PIL was the blueprint for Nu-Metal

Ok, here is why:

1. White group takes elements from hipster "rebellious" genres of black and white music. Punk/Dub or Metal/Rap

2. The main hooks come from overly melodramatic lyrics and vocal delivery

3. Music speaks mainly to a male audience

4. Sex appeal sacrificed in the name of "rigour"

5. Melody takes backseat compared ryhthm, vocals are nearly unmusical

Alright, you glib, ironic fucks, crucify me and my pet theory of the day. I dare you.

Wouldn't all that make Led Zeppelin/most early heavy metal the blueprint for nu-metal? Like, old-metal led to nu-metal?

adam, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

are concert films with drag racing, private planes, and enchanted wizardry "rigourous"?

Besides, aren't all the zep lyrics about getting laid/not getting laid anymore?

mt, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is "rigourous" perhaps the most meaningless adjective I've heard applied to pop music in quite a while (well, besides, "influencial")? Does anyone believe "rigourous" (or, "rigorous") has ever crossed Fred Durst's lips? "Um, that was okay guys, but this time let's do a little more rigorous! Again, with feeling! 1-2-3-4..."

J Blount, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"aren't all the zep lyrics about getting laid/not getting laid anymore?" just like limp bizkit.

J Blount, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sex appeal sacrificed in the name of "rigour"

Doesn't explain Linkin Park.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

before you get really worked up, I do not actually believe that PIL is the blueprint for rap metal.

I did find certain similiarities between Limp Bizkit and PIL when I was listening this afternoon.

Is PIL Rap Metal for Snobs?

mt, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, it's dub for dilettantes

J Blount, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

PIL is Can for punks. (Wait, actually, isn't Can Can for punks?)

Clarke B., Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

mark s, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Calling it 'Second Edition' = you didn't buy it in the tin! (Old Chain Reaction 'feud' finally laid to rest haha!)

Andrew L, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

can we send someone back in time to kill PIL before they release Metal Box?

DV, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

mt didn't buy Metal Box = he was late to the party.

Andy K, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

PIL were definetely INFLUENTIAL to nu-metal.

I don't believe this but I just wanted to say they were INFLENTIAL, Okay!

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

No Second Edition is the blueprint for postrock ;)

Ben Williams, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Or 'math'-rock

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Andrew L, I was two years old in 1979. However, if I did have a copy from when I was that young, I would own every last one of you for the rest of Eternity. :)

So what were you listening to when you were in Diapers? I liked PIL, BITCH!!!!!

mt, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"White group takes elements from hipster "rebellious" genres of black and white music. Punk/Dub or Metal/Rap"

Isn't this like every band from the Carter Family to the Beatles to like every post-punk Brit act.

I was born in 1979, and I have the CD version in a tin. Does that get me props?

Thought not.

Nick Southall, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I finally figured out my fascination with ILM; it's the only place where being born earlier makes you cooler. It does, right???

Sean, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

YEEEEEESSS!!

mark s, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Has anyone else here had the experience of their Metal Box getting all corroded and rusty over the years? I don't remember leaving it out in the rain. Maybe I should buy some polish.

Also, why does the music speak mainly to a male audience? I knew loads of gal PiL fans, but admittedly, that was ages ago.

Arthur Who Was 18 When Metal Box Came Out, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

mine is v.tarnished too :(

and it's always a nightmare getting the bastard discs OUT of the tin w/o scratching them: hoho very situationist lydon

mark s, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

When I worked in used rekord store, most of the pil tinnies we got in were a bit rusty. The starnglers "Raven" w/ 3D sleever was cooler IMO (I still own a copy of that one, but have only PIL's 1st - on CD at that)

Norman Phay, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

ten years pass...

no nu metal band could've come up w/ something like "death disco." just sayin'.

Old ILX threads are so weird.

circa1916, Sunday, 23 December 2012 04:02 (eleven years ago) link

the new ones are much more academic and vetted of controversial opinions to pre-empt people from calling the poster a moron who doesn't know anything about music history and the nuances of every sub-genre.
