just got the Full On CD (thanks, Andy B!) and boyohboy. the man is a friggin' genius. granted, the album isn't perfect or anything, but obviously he's on some other plane as far as style/originality/execution is concerned. any other thoughts?

anyway, tood ist super genius. although i've always been vaguely unsettled (in a good way) that his vocal tracking techniques were influenced by enya. (which means, tangentially, dem 2 and the artful dodger were influenced by enya. take that, sinker.)

as with Larry Levan, Todd's done so many great tracks & mixes that you'll keep unearthing more & more classics and every time you think you've found a new fave, another comes along to stun you again/more!

i disagree with many reviewers who say that too much Todd in a row (e.g. full mixes like Full On & the others) dilutes his power. if anything, it highlights his radical techniques and range of hooks. on the other hand, a well-placed Todd track on its own can have a devastating effect in a set - elevating ("who or what was that?!")!

my first Todd exposure was his remix of Mantra's "Away," on Tuff Jams: Speed Garage: The Underground Sound of London comp back in 1998, and I think it's still my favorite track of his. multicolored strobelight effects, buoyant harmony/ies, psychedelic and disorienting but really playful in a friendly kind of way--not that teeth-baring monster-eyed smiley stuff.

seeing him spin at Centro-Fly (in the basement) w/SciFi and Andy B (and the Pope and others) was definitely one of my musical highlights this year. he played I think ONE song by another person and the rest were his his his. the sound mix was fucked up--too much midrange, when the trick w/an Edwards track is that you need to hear it eq'ed as all top and bottom--but that got fixed eventually. a lot of folks just stood there looking at him, trying to figure out what the fuck was going on, and Todd didn't care--he's really into what he does, there's a kind of peace about him. granted, he's also obviously a complete geek and from the brief introduction I had to him I gathered that he's a little out there. (he's very religious, for instance, which may help explain the sort of benighted innocence he has about him--which I hope doesn't sound like either a condemnation or romanticization of folks who care deeply about god.)

I'd personally pay money to watch him create a track.

I have to agree, I love his stuff, and whenever I see anything with his name on I snap it up straight away, which is funny 'cos I don't really care for US Garage much in general, but to be fair he is in a genre of his own, and his influence on the UK garage scene is unmistakable.

Don't kow much about him though. Does he ever DJ in England, and I hear he's a very devote Christian (although half of the states seem to be).

Todd Edwards is a genius on a Brian Wilson/Kevin Shields level. I still like Simon Reynolds' description of his vocal science, "so burstingly rapturous it's almost painful to the ear." I do however, think that his lack of rhythmic variety verges on the maniacal.

Aaaaarrrgghh, why are those horrible people at amazon.co.uk inflicting me so much pain? "Full On Vol. 2" was supposed to be released at the end of february (I ordered it immediately), and since then have pushed the release date week by week! They finally seem to have left it at march 24 so I hope to get it soon, and in the meantime I take solace in the fact that, judging by the mail from an amazon employee someone posted on the TE yahoo group, it has "proved to be a very popular item".

Anyway, bar a few duff tracks, Full On 2 is set to be amazing. I'm soooo psyched (not to mention pretty damn impatient by now). He's made a few radio appearances in UK radio last week, and sound clips have been put up on www.todd-edwards.net. I recommend heading straight for the part 2 of the set he did on Richie Vibe Vee's show - the sequence from "You're The One" to the Space Cowboy remix is my new favourite thing ever.

Also - anyone seen recent pics of the man? He certainly got helluva lot chubbier since those two old I! Records promo shots that have been the only existing available images of him for, ooh, an eternity. Also, he now wears a T-shirt with the legend "Jesus loves garage"! Godlike genius indeed.

love todd, but am gonna have to disagree about akufen. he's doing a lot more than just ripping edwards and he's wicked live... really makes people move, even in venues where he by rights probably shouldn't, rejigging his tracks for proper dancefloor punch... plus you can argue that he's equally as influenced by the likes of bangalter and basement jaxx as edwards... good piece all the same, though ;-)

I'm probably taking Matos' last comment too seriously since it might've been more of a Dave-ribbing tossed-off comment than a cut-in-stone belief, but it's one that I've heard a few times that I don't necessarily agree with.

Unless you're talking about a microhouse producer who has just started in the last year or two, I think it's terribly difficult to pinpoint who took what from where. In Akufen's case, his '00/'01 releases wouldn't have been out of place on Kompakt; if anything, he was developing nuances in his style at the same time. You have to consider that some of his earlier releases were on Trapez and Perlon, two labels that have made the style what it is just as much as Kompakt.

Besides, someone who picks up a Kompakt 12" at random these days has about a 1/4 chance of hearing a track that resembles anything on My Way. Several other labels are more confined to that type of sound -- again, some have released Akufen tracks. With the way Kompakt has branched out in the last few years, I find myself using them as an adjective a lot less these days -- almost never, actually.

(None of this has anything to do with Edwards, so I apologize. I really enjoyed reading the article, if that helps.)

I think Edwards gets a bit too much credit for 2-step. Vocals, yes, but beats and basslines, absolutely not. Most of his stuff is just standard house thump--that's why he gets old faster than he should.

With Akufen, I couldn't really get past the first few tracks on the album, which (admittedly on a superficial listen) sounded like bad IDM circa 1995.

I couldn't possibly disagree more with any of what Ben Williams said. The beats and bass of a track like "Never Far from You" absolutely fall in line with early 2step, and his hi-hat programming has always been very intricate, adding a polyrhtyhmic frission to the regular 4/4. As for My Way, that was an extremely superficial listen, all right.

True, well you know BAD FIRST IMPRESSIONS and all of that, but yes Art Depo and B&S most certainly have biased me against whoever else people want to associate with them. These tracks are all fine (or at least that last one was until MGMT came in) but they don't get me excited. I loved the Robin Thicke one when I heard it in a DJ Q mix, so maybe playing this stuff with the pitch way up and surrounded by garridge is the key.

I was saying on twitter tho that even tho I got into dance music through house, I'm kind of super-bummed by almost anything 4x4 at the moment. Seems to kind of have become the provenance of dance music's stodgiest elements (or most garish, but I'm less frustrated with that kru).
