Defend the indefensible: Santana's "Supernatural"

I heard that duet with Rob Thomas, "Smooth," today on the radio, and after briefly conjuring up the briefest nostalgia for that beautiful first summer of college, I wanted to take a blowtorch to my car radio. I opted for changing the station instead. Remember the phenomenon? What the fuck happened? Is it possible to defend this album?

My "beautiful first summer of college" was more marred by Alanis Morrissette and the Macarena, so now I kinda want to take the blowtorch to my own head

P.S. It's a lame song, but at least it's just lame in a rote Grammy-jam kind of way, with only the vocal-hook break really reaching a level of active annoyance

Also "The Game of Love" (with ... Michelle Branch, right?) -- that is a great song and has kinda lasted just based on undemanding breezy feel-good vibes

There is some fairly good guitar playing on that album. The guy who plays guitar must be a good guitar player.

(Oh, sorry, just a pathetic attempt to defend something indefensible)

P.P.S. Holy geez, I didn't realize this was as long ago as 1999 -- I totally retract my joke about being old!

when elvin jones died, carlos said, "I'm really embarrassed for this nation, and for MTV and VH1 and Rolling
Stone, because it was a very racist thing not to acknowledge this most important musician when he passed. For them to (play up) Ozzy Osbourne and other corny-ass white people, but not Elvin, is demeaning and I'm really embarrassed to live in this country."

right on. except, "corny-ass white people"? dude, who the fuck have you been making records with for the past ten years?

Easy. If this album never existed, the aforementioned and brilliant "Game of Love" would never have happened, nor would Rob Thomas' splendid "Lonely No More", basically "Smooth" in an alternative universe where it's actually good.

I actually like "Smooth" and always have, and like "Maria Maria" even moreso. I jammed this album way back when. I'm not too cool to say so.

i will say this in the song's favor: it's easy to forget and put out of your mind!

i liked it at the time too, and am ashamed to say so

The song with Eagle-Eye Cherry was good, too. And the Cee-Lo/Lauryn Hill song.

Well, it brought joy to people like my mom, who buys one album every 10 years.

"Smooth" and "Maria Maria" are both good, but we've discussed this before. As I said somewhere else, this album didn't succeed by just appealing to aging boomers, but also appealed to lots of younger listeners, including a sizeable Latino audience. (In fact, my brother's younger daughter didn't initially believe my brother when he told her Santana had been around for decades. She thought it was someone new.) That's not necessarily a defense, but it takes away one way that the album can be dismissed.

compared to santana dreck like "i'm winning," "supernatural" is a masterpiece.

Put your lights on is a great MOR song ruined by Carlos Santana's shitty MOR guitar.

I know, right?, Sunday, 20 January 2008 17:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I took this album very very seriously in 7th grade.

The only real defense of this album is that it put Carlos Santana back in the spotlight for awhile, and I think he deserves that much.

I kinda like that song, but it's funny...Santana's main little hooky line that he plays throughout the song sounds almost identical to the Style Council's "My Ever Changing Moods"
