ILX 2007 ALBUMS & TRAX POLL ::::::::::::::::nominations due by 01/01/08:::::::::::::::::

Wow, has it really been (half of) a year? The nominations process for the ILX 2007 ALBUMS & TRAX POLL (which, btw, like all year-end polls needs a decent nickname) is basically the same as last: you can nominate up to 15 albums AND/OR tracks. 15 tracks, 14 albums and 1 track, 3 tracks and 4 albums, 1 track, etc.

Guidelines:
-The noms in question had to have had a fairly significant release (or re-release) in 2007.
-Album tracks on albums released in 2007 qualify
-Tracks on albums released in 2006 that were singles in 2007 qualify
-Tracks on albums released in 2007 that are going to be singles in 2008 do not qualify, save 'em for the next one

Timeline:
You can make your nominations anytime before 2008. I don't think nominations need that much time but I'd rather not start the voting process during the holiday, so I will draw this out a bit. I'll attempt to kick-off the voting within a few days of the start of the new year, and maybe have everything wrapped up in January (the impossible dream).

Any ideas/advice/etc are welcome!

I'm gonna wait as late as possible to see how many albums I really want to nominate, and hopefully use most of my nominations on tracks, because the way things are going so far, the tracks nominees list is going to be fucking paltry.

ciderpress, just to clarify once an album has been nominated in a thread, it's taken - therefore you need to select other albums. Many of your selections have already been nominated.

re: Tell me ILX isn't actually making me submit less choices...

Solution: listen to some more albums

djmartian, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 20:43 (sixteen years ago) link

I adjusted it based on the participation in last year's poll...too many choices with too few voters spreads things too thin.

musically, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 20:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I participated last year. So lemmi have some more slots.

Ewan Pearson - Piece Work

Suzanne Vega - Beauty & Crime

Paul in Santa Cruz, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 20:49 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah are you counting nominations as votes or are you gonna make another voting thread after this?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 18 December 2007 20:52 (sixteen years ago) link

There's another voting thread after the nomination process. You're nomming things to be voted upon.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 21:01 (sixteen years ago) link

re: yeah are you counting nominations as votes or are you gonna make another voting thread after this?

this is just the initial nominations process not actual voting. That happens in the next stage in the new year.

djmartian, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 21:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd just like to nom one:

Voice of the Seven Woods - s/t (Twisted Nerve)

the others will probably get nommed anyway, so that's all.

re: I adjusted it based on the participation in last year's poll...too many choices with too few voters spreads things too thin.

Disagree there were albums that were begging to be included last year, and i made the case for a wild card sweep-up at the end. Which sadly wasn't implemented, some late stragglers said they would have voted for those albums.

djmartian, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 21:07 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost

Now until 2008: nominations. Every album and track that receives a single nomination is put on a list, and when voting time comes around, only items on the list are eligible to be voted for. This isn't the actual voting, but just a way of creating a common pool of candidates for the sake of having a decent poll that, like I was saying above, isn't spread too thin.

An album or song only needs one nomination to be placed on the ballot. Obviously, if something has been nominated already there's no point in nominating it again.

First couple weeks of Jan: voting. I'll compile a list of all eligible nominees, post it in the voting thread, and then have everyone email me directly with their votes. I'll post detailed info about the voting process when the time comes.

musically, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 21:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Thanks for doing this, seems like a lot of work to collect nominees and votes.

Paul in Santa Cruz, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 21:24 (sixteen years ago) link

er ... nominations and votes

Paul in Santa Cruz, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 21:25 (sixteen years ago) link

There are always going to be albums and tracks that miss getting a nomination, and people who pop up in the end who manage to miss the thread (even though it was bumped consistently for two weeks)...but based on the work I did adding up all the votes, I thought scaling things down a bit would make the poll more effective overall. Perhaps since this poll is a bit more timely than the last, there will be more nominees and voters, and the issue of having obvious candidates not included will be lessened this time around.

musically, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 21:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Okay, I think I omitted a ton of stuff. I'll post an updated, hopefully complete draft in an hour or so. Meanwhile, you all can still point out any misspellings or non-2007 tracks if you see any.

musically, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 22:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Musically, the list should have the regular version of Feist "1,2,3,4" too.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 22:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually, I was right to not include it on the short list but wrong when I didn't post it earlier on Mordechai's list of tracks that didn't make the cut. I will add it to the final list though since it was my mistake.

musically, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 22:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm not sure how Amy Winehouse's Back To Black and Lily Allen's Alright Still count as 2007 albums. I would vote for them if this was a 2006 poll.

Alba, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 22:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Jarvis, Lily and Amy are all 2006 releases in my mind but all had 2007 US releases - so let the Americans vote for them. Robyn's album was released way back in 2005 and it still counts.

What I'm confused about is "Justice - Justice"

danzig, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 22:43 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah late-as-hell American releases means some albums get to take up precious list slots over and over! there's too much at stake for these shenanigans to continue. i shall vote for Robyn again not out of hypocrisy but rather to put these iniquities into stark relief.

tremendoid, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 22:51 (sixteen years ago) link

now somebody say 'godspeed'.

tremendoid, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 22:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Justice - Cross
Justice - Justice

Surely these are the same album? (I.e the untitled one with a big cross on the cover.)

Tuomas, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 23:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Danzig, what's the confusion about the Justice album?

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 23:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, the Justice album is just one album, sometimes referred to as "Cross", "Justice", "self-titled", and most accurately as "†"

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 23:09 (sixteen years ago) link

bloody hell, though, musically: enormous respect. this is some task you've set yerself.

Okay, I see where I went wrong last time around, SO...*********************http://ilx2007poll.googlepages.com/home********************* has the new list. Please name and shame if you see any more mistakes.

xpost Chris in Belfast, you are late but the good news is that just about every single thing you nominated has already been nominated. But if you can find any that weren't (see above link for reference) I'll sneak them on.

musically, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 23:43 (sixteen years ago) link

You guys complaining about Winehouse's inclusion DO realize that the album is making MOST major American critics top ten lists? I understand you got it first, but our part of the world is just now grokking; it's 2007 to us.

It's OK; I don't really mind what a single someone else likes or dislikes! Besides, you've got FOTL in at 3 which I also heartily approve of.

Can I just say to musically that WFANFC is in fact Working For A Nuclear Free City? I don't want to cause any confusion, not that I expect anyone to vote for it. Thanks!

Just got offed, Thursday, 3 January 2008 00:06 (sixteen years ago) link

bump...I'll kick off voting tomorrow, so if there any other corrections I need to make, please say so!

This may be nitpicking, but Pharoahe Monch is written with an "oa", not "Pharaohe". The name is written correctly in the album nominations, but incorrectly in the track noms.

musically, you forgot my nominations:

Sally Shapiro - Skating in the Moonshine
Sally Shapiro - He Keeps Me Alive
Saint Etienne & Annie - This Is Tomorrow
Girls Aloud - Black Jacks
New Young Pony Club - Ice Cream
Roisin Murphy - You Know Me Better (don´t know it it qualifies, it might be a single in '08)
Glasvegas - Daddy´s Gone

The most correct title for the Justice album is .

Spencer Chow, Friday, 4 January 2008 00:51 (sixteen years ago) link

A few small corrections on my nominations:

Atavist's album is called: "II (Ruined)"

...and further down:

Moonsorrow's album: "Viides luku - Hävitetty"

Sorry about the weird title formats of these two albums!

Enormous respect from me for doing this, too. Quite an undertaking.

rockapads, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:18 (sixteen years ago) link

daavid, refer to the amended list which is linked to a few posts above yours. I believe it has all your noms included.

musically, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Lindstrom's The Contemporary Fix is definitely 2006, as a single and album track. I don't even think there's a US rerelease to make it qualify!

Alba, Friday, 4 January 2008 10:09 (sixteen years ago) link

One more correction/potential confusion-

Those Map of Africa tracks are two separate tracks
Map of Africa AND Ely Cathedral

And good job, by the way, thanks.

Are you going to get the people who nominated stuff to do little blurbs for those that chart? I thought that was a nice idea when they/we did that in some of the other polls.

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 4 January 2008 11:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's what I miss about the old polls, plus revealing the top records one at a time. Hope you will do this old-scholl ILX style...

Tuomas, Friday, 4 January 2008 11:33 (sixteen years ago) link

And now ... to try and listen to all the stuff I haven't heard!

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 4 January 2008 11:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Bird And Bee

I think that's a bowlderisation too far, musically. Voters may not recognise artist! I can see point in excluding unnecessary definite articles, but could you put at least one of them back? Thanks.

surely there are going to be so many nominations in this forthcoming poll that the results are going to be fairly meaningless. there will be a smattering of votes for the usual suspects (in rainbows, kala, sound of silver etc...) and a load of individual votes for the likes of alasdair roberts (from me!).

and anyway, 2007 lists are so last year.

I do a search and replace to get rid of leading "The"s, so once in a while a necessary one might be removed and not replaced manually by me.

only Jeff and I will vote for The Bird And The Bee anyway

Last-minute add-in:

The Fall - Reformation Post TLC

Even if everyone else hates it, it is the album I've listened to most from '07. BLACK RIVER! FALL MOTEL! CHEESE STEAKS! LAMP! GOLDFISH BOWL!

Oops... misread 08 as meaning Jan 08... never mind then mumble mumble

you know, I love that Apples In Stereo album, but I could swear it came out in December 2006... I mean it's cool, whatever. An album that comes out in December (whether I am correct about this or not) arguably deserves the carry-over.

Per amazon it came out Feb 6 2007 in the US.

Albums from 2007 that I listened to most in 2007:

Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha
Apples In Stereo - New Magnetic Wonder
Flight of the Conchords - Chaki's comp
The Format - Dog Problems (Did Atlantic bury this record? I LOVE this album)
Society of Rockets - Our Paths Related (so sue me)
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Justice - Justice (Not every track is great, but more than a few, so I'll just go with the album)
Once - OST
Spiritualized - Live at Boston MFA
